If there is something that can make you a better athlete, will you do it? That doesn't mean you have to clean 420lbs like Nick Chubb. But the low hanging fruit of getting a clean from 135lbs to 185, from 185 to 225, etc... it's too easy to not do.
Started off doing oly lifting back in 70's and powerlifting in '81 and have always thought doing both styles was optimal, if one style stalled out, the other beckoned me with open arms, no matter how many times l switched things up. Having options is important for lifetime lifters, as well as hardcore athletes
Never in any contact sport do you quickly explode through a concentric movement get pushed into eccentric then push back in a strong concentric movement. That totally doesn't sound like what happens to linemen during an entire game of football. 😂
I'm a high school volleyball coach that just hit 50 years old earlier this year. I used to do more of a power lifting style workout, and any time I needed to participate in drills, I was just about useless for a couple days after a heavy squat workout. 1 jump and I was done for a while. Since then I've switched to a lot more Oly lifts. I hit the weight room 5-6 days a week, and still participate in drills. I'll get gassed when a rally goes longer than a minute, but that's just about anyone with high level volleyball.
The only valid argument might be that maybe the time to learn the lift is better spent learning other technical skills. But that is a weak argument. It might be true occasionally. But not as a general Rules. Because this argument in general could be applied to every barbell lift
Some of the anti-Olympic lift arguments sound like political talking points to me. So if you're deadlifting that's not "taxing on the CNS" and the "neurological cost" is so low that we're in an economic prosperity cycle, but if you take a slightly different initial stance and pull a lighter weight and then quickly rack it in a quarter front squat in a power clean - now we're suddenly in the Great Depression of "neurological cost"?? So where does the 'cost' start? The first phase of the clean must be pretty cheap, pulling it from the floor I guess. Does it get "taxing" when the bar touches the thighs and you pull with the arms? Or does the cost start later when the bar is weightless and you're trying to get under it? And then "can't turn football players into Olympic lifters", just because Olympic lifting is a separate sport. Well, there are bench press competitions and powerlifting meets, definitely don't want your football players becoming "professional Powerlifters or bench pressers" either then! Can't have them doing yoga for recovery either or they might become spiritual gurus from India. If they jump over hurdles too much and do broad jumps and bounds, that will make them a track and field athlete. But of course it sounds super "expert" and fancy when it’s said with an important look on the face and with "credentials" to match. Exactly like politics basically.
Lol, I love that Football is used as just a general one skill when each position can and does have multiple and mutually exclusive skills across positions and within the position itself. But nah man, can’t add a clean or snatch to that arsenal of primary skills to be good at….
I agree with you. Buddy Morris is very knowledgeable and I think what he meant to say was it's hard to get players that make $5m/year to properly perform power lifts during the season. To your point, ask any running backs coach the easiest way to spot a potential stud RB... it's the power clean... very transferable to the field
The crossfitter example is so true. Most elite crossfitters come from a gymnastics and/or weightlifting background. I don't see how being super good at snatches would make you worse at doing burpees over a barbell or how being proficient at ring muscle ups would make you worse at running a mile with a 30lb vest. I really think the only constraint in terms of managing concurrent physiological development of different skills is time. Like I'm sure if someone like Usain Bolt had double the time in the world and spent the rest of that practicing football (soccer) at a high level he would have the potential to be the greatest sprinter and football player at the same time. It's just we never see examples like that in real life because we only have so much time.

I relly like your content and i would really appreciate if you could talk about Wrestling
Right on time. Perfect
This is what happens when you don't like olympic lifts and have to make up a reason to refuse to use them with your athletes
Yep

How do i get my off dribble vert closer to the height of my max approach vert? I jump about 6 inches lower off the dribble.
Thankyou Will.
What are your thoughts on Weck Method Head over foot?

Exactly! It's not like running backs don't cut, dive, stop & go, sprint, create contact, pick up blitzes, catch. And that's just one position!
This isn't even factoring in that some football players play multiple positions.

Will with a video over not 2 but 3 minutes! Must be emptying the chamber on this one!
Fred Duncan of course lol. Dude has some good info but man he loves to repost Buddy Morris hating on Oly lifts.
Is Fred actually going to debate you on this topic?
He said he might do a debate with me after some seminar he’s doing in February. I’m not holding my breath though.
@@willratelle8027 he loves to tell people he’s going to debate you, but he’d rather go after instagram commenters
Lol so true
@@KYRsm00vego read my comment on this video I just posted. Fred is an absolute clown.
I’ve said many times that athletes don’t need Olympic lifts, but I still found that clip of Buddy to be nonsense
The real question is this. What would strength coaches argue about if they couldn’t have the Olympic lift debate anymore? Good god, who gives a shit
Training is GPP for the athlete - refuses to do exercises that have tons of utility for GPP ??😅
No barbell on football field. Not specific enough for football. EZ argument.
Lots of med balls and trap bars around the 50 yard line though that they have to toss and jump with!
In other words, Buddy Morris couldn't coach/perform the olympic lifts!

Nicesu
crossfitters being good at crossfit doesn't mean they're great at something specific

Buddy morris is a better coach than you
Lol
