    Man I love the way the lower tuning sounds, it's oddly very somber.

    Really great banjo. When the daylight shined through the sound hole the hide looked transparent.

    Yes
    I like your banjo style. It is flowing. The peghead flows into the neck, and the neck flows into the pot.

    You built this amazing instrument and play on like a pro. What a talented young man 👏👏👏.
    Also loved the breath taking L.A view all done in 4K.

      I visited Brazil last year for a friend's wedding in Curitiba, I loved it there and hopefully can go back someday!

    To think that at one time, there was some explorer or settler sitting right up there on those same mountains looking over that whole valley to the ocean without a single house in sight is pretty crazy. Maybe he even picked up his banjo while admiring the same view

      I think about that a lot. There are some pictures before it was all developed, but that's obviously still after centuries of Spanish settlement. The area was pretty well populated with Tongva and Chumash, and you'd likely have seen many villages dotting the landscape, but they didn't practice agriculture so nearly all the land would have been wild. Much of the LA basin was marshland, and harbored unique ecosystems of cienegas, which are a type of very wide, very slow moving river, which basically don't exist anymore

    You are such an amazing player. I could sit and listen to you play for hours. That banjo sounds fantastic as well, excellent work. I play bluegrass but I really love the way traditional banjo sounds and a gourd just has such a unique tone to it.

    Very excellent job well done Ben, this one turned out awesome! The planetary tuners look awesome too! I like your rendition of trouble on my mind as well. By the way, do you have a solid source for gourds or do you grow them yourself?

    • @bengreco
      @bengreco  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks!!
      It's a tough year for gourds on the west coast I think, I haven't confirmed it but it seems like the last growing season was pretty bad. I was just talking to a guy who uses a ton of gourds to make indigenous Mexican instruments and he's having a lot of trouble sourcing gourds right now as well.
      I usually get mine from Wellburn Gourd Farm but they're pretty low on stock. When I go back east to visit family I'm gonna ship some back with me, much easier to source them in the east.

    Hi Ben. Would you consider doing video lessons? I really love the way you play.

      @bengreco  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I might do a few tutorials in the future, but most of the things I play were arranged by Clifton Hicks, and he has some great lessons on his youtube if you haven't come across them already

    You’ve made my night completely
    I’ve been studying music independently for awhile exploring music and instruments and none have fascinated me more than the banjo. The sound and feel I get from it is soul rejuvenating
    I still really want to get my hands one but don’t know what my best options are. I’ve been looking at preowned ones but no luck. Do you have a shop or take commissions?

    • @bengreco
      @bengreco  Před 7 měsíci

      thanks so much!
      I do take commissions for gourd banjos, working on getting a website up for it but my email's in the description if you want more info.
      Also sometimes you can get a nice antique banjo on ebay for a good price, if you know which brands to look for. If you use nylon strings it'll give that nice oldtimey sound. My main player is an 1890's JB Schall that I got on ebay for just a little over $300 a few years ago.
