Takeaways:
- The slower the movement the more images you'll draw
- During fast movements the objects seems to stretch
- Soft objects deform during impact
these are great takeaways!
This helped me realize why I wasn't improving much in animation, when I started I tried to go from a bouncing ball to acting in animation, this caused me to have little improvement since I first started in 2020. Now I'm going back and starting from the beginning and now I'm gradually building up knowledge by doing these exercises and im actually improving.
Advice: don't rush it.
Yes! Glad to hear that, anytime I find myself overwhelmed it's usually because I'm jumping into something too quickly
@@ModernDayJames :D
I had seen most of these before, but this video was so approachable that I'm doing many for the first time now! Every part of this video is spot on. 10/ 10 will watch again and again and again
really glad to hear that! thanks for the kind words
czcams.com/video/_dm0lCO_FsM/video.html sauce
Just a little suggestion for the Pendulum Animation. Don't put an IB frame on the Middle of the Arc. It causes a little Jarring motion when drawn there (noticeable when the frames are Cleaned-up and colored). It's an old Animation trick. You either put it in slightly to the left or right of the middle, depending on your timing and direction.
Thanks for the great comment! I'll implement that in the future
@@geomangaka5565 I think it’s in-between frame but not 100% certain. Hopefully OP answers.
Really I gotta test it
Whats a ib frame?
@@Yeloman7 Possibly in-between, like what Tenki said.
2:03 I was just going to watch the rest of the video but because of your immense trust in me, I did the exercise :,)
Thx for the help, I've always wanted to animate, and learn how, but I couldn't understand a lot of it, but your video really helped me
Hard
Highly recommend “12 principles of animation” by Alan Becker tutorials in addition to this, it’s every bit of knowledge an animator should be familiar with the most condensed in just a few examples and breakdowns
These exercises are literally more detailed than the ones we had my college’s 2D animation class (though the professor did suddenly retire a few weeks in, so that certainly didn’t help…) I’m definitely gonna be looking through your CZcams videos and checking out your lessons on your personal website. Idk how much time I have but I’d really like to try some of these out. Thank you so much for posting them!
I like when the blue ball bouncing away from us in perspective on the 4th loop, looks like it bounces off the horizon line. Great video. Thank you for taking the time to make it and share it with us. Much much appreciated.
I love the movement and weight aspects that can be achieved through animation. When probably done, it's visually astounding and I really really hope I get to that level someday.
I did this for a whole week. 1 animation a day. This was really helpful, it helped me get out of my comfort zone and really challenged me to do animation and problem solve everything. I genuinely believe I have learned a lot just by watching this video. Thank you, James!
I've been using Blender for 3D animation for a couple of years now and have always wanted to give its 2D animation engine a try; Thank you for helping me get started with that :)
A very big thank you from me, ive never actually took timing & spacing and making an animation look smooth seriously but now bc of you i finally have and i just made a bouncy ball that im actually quite proud of, and im going to keep working to make more, thank you!
I will definitely use this! Thank you so much for making this!
I've always wanted to do animation because it can make my art come to life, now i like seeing my own animated bouncy ball bounce.
I want to be Disney Animator in future
FINALLY!!!! I’ve been looking all over for this
Interesting animation, the ball is drawn bouncy and realistic and the pacing is great, thank you for your approach.
I need a second part with more advanced exercises to practice, this is great!
All I see is the Millennium Puzzle in the pendulum animation.
(Reached the end and saw the snippets of your other videos. Now I KNOW that was the Millennium Puzzle. Nice)
IT IS, but I got lazy with the details
I saw that too lol
THE MILLENIUM PUZZLE
all joking aside I tried the first exercise and was immediately feeling more confident than when i was just animating with no practice
Thank you for this :) this was very simple and straight-forward, and dint give too much info all at once!! This really helped my understanding with animation!
I always love watching basics videos because I find myself getting back to the more important parts after watching.
I'm animating with Pivot Animator. It's really a great program for people to learn the principles of animations without the need to be good at drawing.
To be an absolute nerd here-
Gravity is quadratic, so the amount a falling object goes down between frames is like this:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9...
And the reverse for something going up. If the object has an initial velocity up or down, you just add that to each frame. Say it goes down with an initial velocity of 10 per frame. Then between each frame it goes down by:
11, 13, 15, 17, 19...
Where has this channel been my whole life. Have my sub sir
this taught me sm tysm the perspectives videos were also great, a little confusing at first but it makes more sense now
My friend told me that there's 2 ways to learn thing: For example, being taught how to swim through people being beside you and teaching you how, or someone throwing you into the middle of the pool and hope you don't drown.
Now learned to swim the second way. (spoiler: I'm not very good at swimming.)
Anyway this video helps a lot!! Thank you!!
Did you mean "I" instead of "Now"?
You do need some basic knowledge in the first place, for the second way to work at all. If you just throw someone who's never swam before into the ocean and told them to figure it out, you're just gonna make them into a bloated corpse.
This is the best! I would love more videos like this one. I would like this to be a series.
Thanks for uploading it really helped me
Awesome, thank you!
omg I never animated at least this smooth thank you very very much!
I am joyous that I found your channel on Instagram, subscribing to watch for more animation tips. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Your contact quality is incredible.
I didn't lie about nothin, it's just 3am and half n hour into a melatonin for me my guy. Good shit!!!
sounds like something a liar would say
Amazing vid Please make it a series Thank you!
In the 2nd exercise, it should be noted that, to easier obtain proper _spacing_ in the "side perspective", vertical construction lines can be bridged from the edges of each ball of the "top perspective"... (and then, from this point, increase/decrease the size of the balls according to depth perception).
...In other words, basically..... move all the balls from the "top view" drawing down to the "side view" drawing.
This idea can be found on page 86 in Richard Williams "Animator's Survival Kit".
great comment! I should have included this in the demonstration
@@ModernDayJames Keep it up, James, you're a genuine beast 🙏
Best animation tutorial 😍
Spacing - More drawing to make faster
Squash and Sketch - builds anticipation
i hope to one day make animations like these yo
Really good stuff
I'm going to review and watch it again, I think I can do something interesting your way!
thank you!!
thank you for this video it really encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone :)
imma grind with my animation journey now
I kinda hated animating on ones but this is a good test of patience, thanks james
I love the 3d level 2 exercises
Classical Knowledge, Thankyou Sir 🙏
Thanks, GOD bless you.
Yeah I will save this for later I'm already working on something, but this will definitely help.
Animation blows my mind.
This is so useful
Every time I see the bouncing ball animation exercise I always have to comment about my university teacher for animation. Who told us in our first lesson. "I'm not going to do the bouncing ball stuff cause you could just learn that in a book, you can do it in your own time if you want" Then proceeded to teach us nothing for 3 years. Thankyou everyone who posts this stuff on youtube.
YOU SIR, ARE A LIFE SAVIOR
Im not THAT new to animation, but im watching this just incase..
I like the Millenium Puzzle reference for the pendulum, lol.
So much learning .great video .love from india ❤️
This maybe the best animation channel, 😄
Heck yes bro. When I get around to it, I’ll upload my results.
please do! You can send it on the discord server
@@ModernDayJames well, I don’t got discord but I uploaded it to my CZcams. Thanks for all the helpful videos 👍
Thankyou!!!!
As someone who knows physics very well, These seem pretty easy to me. I hope my knowledge of physics and mathematics will continue to help my future game development career.
Looking forward to purchase your class soon. and also looking forward for mor tuto like this. it is 9:58 pm PST at the moment I am leaving this coment but so tomorrow I have already a lot of homework to do. thaks for that. Take care and wish you a lot of success
What software do you use to make that animation?
Wonderful
Hi!!! Thanks dude!!! I learn so much with your work!!! Iam using csp, what’s soft did you use? Sorry for my English!!! Saludos desde Argentina!!
UNDERSTAND ANIMATION BECAUSE OF THIS
no way they draw each and every frame. man, these anime are crazy than
Best teacher !!
Hi, thanks you very much for this video ❤️ and I have one question (maybe silly, but...) in pendulum exercise you said that between first extreme and breakdown are 8 frames, but you have to draw only 3 inbetweens, or you make one inbetween last for two frames?
Maybe there is quick answer for that? 😅😅
Wow nice
cant wait to try this in procreate dreams 😊
Hello! I was wondering if you have any suggestions for any animation apps? Btw this really helped me!
If I may, what software do you use?
3:11 when I realize... one of the reason why a simple animation like this look really fine is because of the circle made your brains think it is moving smooth.
if you try to imagine the thing without the lines you will then see that the ball is actually disappearing and reappearing every frame lol
What’s the animation software you using?
In which software will you teach animation?
I was just in science class watching potential energy and kinetic energy demonstrations like this
What site do you use to animate?
What are you using to animate?
Still trying to figure out how to do pose to pose and inbetweening can someone help me?
What software do you suggest for starting animators?
which software or app do u use? i am completely new, plz guide
Am i the only one that actually paused, animated what he told me to and continued watching?
The easiest way to make the bouncing ball perfectly accurate would be to make sure the horizontal speed stays constant. (Have it move the same horizontal distance for each frame while also following the parabolic curves.)
That way the acceleration is always right.
No need to eyball the distance for the next frame, just draw a bunch of equidistant vertical lines. Every intersection with the parabols marks the position for ine frame.
that would be perfectly accurate but accurate doesn't equal aesthetic
. A little exaggerated slow in slow out towards the top of the arc looks better in my experience
And these are the fundamentals of projectile motion!
Nice! Now i just need to lear how to not suck at drawing.. 💀👌✨
What software would you guys recomend? Totally new to this
What software are you guys using ?
What program do you use?
What's the software used to animate?
Hooo yeeea finaly
Be careful 7:35. Just a heads up the ball missed it's que
I hope to try your suggestions through traditional and digital animation. Is practicing anatomy first crucial to doing animation exercises?
You can get good at animating without great anatomy. You can always work on the at the same time
Can I participate in the discord?
I can't access the discord through the CZcams link
Please!
thank you ;-;
Hi, im new in this, which program do you use?
Iam so exited to get to animatioooon that's the reason i started drawing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on paper? or in any software
Was the pendolum supposed ot be on 2s or 1s or both?
what are u useing to animate
Heyo, moderndayjames! I was wondering if 21 is too late to get into animation. Ive only really been practicing my avtual drawing skills for a long time but ive always felt like i wasnt ready or never knew where to start.
Hey bud! I don't think 21 is too late, I started taking drawing seriously at 23 (I did have some prior experience).
@@ModernDayJames Oh okay phew, thats a little relieving lol. Do you think one can learn alot of it without school? Im planning on doing architecture for school (i figured i could hopefully support myself better) while i continue to draw and learn animation alongside it. Sorry for all the questions btw, im just in the dark hehe.
Do I need clip studio paint EX for animation to work? Seems like it's stuck at 24 frames
I think you have to upgrade if you want more frames
