    Great videos, Steve! One refinement that can be made to the code of the login screen is to set the red labels to become invisible by coding it in the OnChange event procedure for txtUserName and txtPassword. This would be in the form of a simple If statement that makes the label invisible if it is visible. That way the labels disappear as soon as the user starts correcting the text in those boxes, hinting to the user that the program knows he is changing the values and they will be re-evaluated the next time he clicks on login.
    As it is in the video, the user will still see his corrected change being labelled as incorrect until he clicks login and by then the screen already closes before the eye can notice the red label disappearing.

    I'm late to the party here but don't go telling the user if they have got the wrong username or password directly, just send a message that the login credentials are wrong.
    The way this particular bit of code works informs the 'Hacker' that they have broken the username and he/she/they can now concentrate on the password.
    So in your code check both username and password in the same pass through then output a message such as 'Incorrect Username/Password Pair'
    Hey Steve, nice helpful series you've put out here.

      @ProgrammingMadeEZ  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes. You can set the rs during form load. I recommend doing it on click though simply because you want your data retrieval as close to the event trigger as possible. Your data could get stale and user might have been disabled, the password might have changed, or something else between when the user opened the form and when they logged in.

    Two things, the objective of a login is to obscure valid names, not display the names of the users.
    And NEVER store a password. Store the hash and after the user types in the password, hash it and compare to the stored hash.

    Hello Steve good tutorial. Could you help me with this challenge. How to make a journal entry form in which total debit must be egual to total debit and each time you enter a specific amount in one side the difference appears with a combo box in which you'll choose a new account line that will equilibrate the 2 columns.

    • @ProgrammingMadeEZ
      @ProgrammingMadeEZ  Před 10 lety

      Your Journal table should have a Debit column, a Credit column, and an Account Number column. Each transaction should have the Debit and Credit columns equal 0. So if you have a credit of $20.00, then you need a debit of -$20.00. Of course the Account column will be filled with the account that the transaction will be recorded for. This is a very common Journal table setup.

    Steve,
    Everything you did here is amazing Thank you! One issue i found is if a user knows a username and they select log in without entering a password it logs the user in. Did I miss a step somewhere to require a password to be entered?

      Sharna, you'll see in the comments below and in the pop up bubble during the video that there is a modification to the code to fix this problem.
      Change If rs!Password Me.txtPassword Then
      to
      If rs!Password Nz(Me.txtPassword, "") Then
      And that will fix it.

    Hi! Your videos are great! I have a question though, is it possible to create a main menu specifically for each users? Like user can only view or have an access to an specific data and such data when they update i - it will automatically update as well the masterfile?

    Have this working fairly well but I would like to some code to handle password changes. What I want to do is open another form to prompt the user for new password and confirmation and then UPDATE the table record with the new password. Opening the form is working well but my UPDATE is not working. Have you covered this in any of your other tutorials?

    I followed through with the steps, but i noticed that I was able to login putting in the username only. I just typed the username, ignored the password field and then click the login button and I was able to login.
    Please explain how I may resolve this issue.

    Hi Steve, thanks for the tutorial. It was really helpful.
    However, i noticed that the password isn't case sensitive.
    For example, if the stored password is P3teR, i am still able to login with p3ter.
    How can i fix this? Looking forward to your quick response....many thanks

    Doesn't this leave your Log in form completely open to an SQL injection.
    I'm not referring to the possibility that someone will be able to "hack" the form, more likely when the user enters there username wrong and gets an error message you're not catching.
    Would it be better to use a parameterized query or is there a more efficient way to traverse the recordset?

    thanks for this tutorial Steve, i find it to be very helpful. I created a login form following this video and it worked well, (picks up correct/incorrect passwords & login id, opens the next form upon identification etc.), but i also noticed that i can still get through without filling the password (i.e. just entering the user id info and then hitting "enter"), would that happen if you try it in your version in this video or is there something in my code i am missing?

    i have a front end and a back end. the tables in the front end are linked to the back end. so i guess what i could is when a user opens the application, i could hide the stuff on the left side and just have them maneuver through forms and reports, right?

      Yes. Ideally they should never see the navigation pane, and I disable the menu/ribbons. I show you how to do that in episode 59.

    Thanks for Great Tutorials, and this user login form which works great. However, I have one issue I hope you can help me with.
    Distributing this Database file to someone else and they put the Database file on their desktop for example, it creates a security warning for the user opening the database for the 1st time, and with the Login Form set to Modal, the user can't click the Accept Security Warning - is there a way to disable the security warning for a user automatically, or for the current database?

    Hey Steve, one question. I followed your instructions and compared my VBA with your google work files.. The login works but sometimes, i get an error saying "OpenForm action was cancelled" which prompts me with the debug window. And the "DoCmd.OpenForm "frmMain"" is highlight yellow. This error is seemingly random as it works fine some moments but doesn't in others. Do you know anything about this and how to resolve it? Thank you.

      Make sure you do a compile followed by a compact/restore. Sometimes it can just be buggy. Additionally you might be encountering the "phantom breakpoint" issue. If you had previously set a breakpoint in your code and compiled while that breakpoint was set, you can sometimes end up with a breakpoint in the compiled code. The only way to fix this is to make sure you clear all breakpoints that you've set, change something in your code (usually just add a space on a line somewhere), then recompile and that should get rid of the phantom breakpoint.

      Vector Vent for anyone else who has this issue, swapping the open form and close form order fixes this. I had the same issue.I think it's down to trying to open a poo up form whilst there is a modal form already open not allowing anything being accessed over the modal form. Closing the login form first allows the new form to open in it's place.

    I have followed your instructions to the letter, and included the corrections on the 'work file' and 'Eduardo Esteves' ' fix concerning brackets. But I am receiving a run time error '2501' and when Debug is pressed it highlights the:
    Docmd.OpenForm "frmMain"
    line showing that there is something wrong with the code on this line. Can you please advise? I can show you further info if you wish.

    • @ProgrammingMadeEZ
      @ProgrammingMadeEZ  Před 7 lety

      First, make sure there is a form called frmMain. Second, make sure that the form can open even if it's not called from the login. And if that is all correct, then do a compact and repair on your database. You may have something corrupt.
