  • Scientists capture a wolf via helicopter on The National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole. They safely captured the wolf for radio collaring, number ID, and DNA samples. It was an incredible sight for our tour guests.

    I watched the video before I read the comments, and I'm glad to see many agree that this is inhumane. They're literally terrified and the stress could kill them as someone already mentioned below, and their response? "Yeah, we know because it's happened before, but oh well." There are plenty of humane ways to trap animals. First of all, stop landing the helicopter 2 feet from them so the lazy ass researcher only has to walk two steps. Land at least 50 ft away, and preferably heading to an animal caught inside a humane trap baited with food, not chased and terrified to the brink of a heart attack by a giant flying predator (for all they know). What's wrong with you people??

    Ya that's about dumb as I have seen. Why chase the wolf with a damn helicopter?

    That could stress it to death

      It has happened in the past but the data given by radio collars far outweighs the risk of losing a wolf. We know where they are so we can prevent livestock conflict and also know what wolves need to live out their lives by game numbers, territory sizes and behaviors. The science is so important for future management.

      Researchers have actually killed a wolf while darting in the past, net gun is believed to be a safer practice.

    Now I understand why wolves cower and run when they hear a helicopter even high up in the sky!

      @@Offshorecazador Yes, just witnessed that behavior in several wolves last week in Yellowstone. A helicopter was flying above them filming, not nearly as low as when they are being collared and researched, but explains their reaction to the sound of a helicopter.

    Could you tell me why moving a wolf out of an elk refuge in a bad winter is wrong? Do not tell me the circle of life, either. It is like a canned hunt, sitting ducks to be slaughtered. Talk about stress on the wolf. What about stress on the pregnant elk cows who will be giving birth soon? NO they did the right thing in moving that wolf.

    • @brushbuck
      @brushbuck  Před 5 měsíci

      They would not have taken the wolf off of the refuge. This would have just been a capture so they could sample some DNA and put a collar on most likely. There's no good or bad, just the natural process of things.
