Timelapse: Rebranding our Class 185 Trains

  • Watch one of our Class 185 trains get a makeover, as our team of engineers add new metallic silver vinyl featuring the North Star. This design and rebrand work is all part of our pledge to ‘Take the North Further’.
    The new vinyl is being applied to 51 trains in total with the work taking place in the North of England at the Siemens Train Care Facility in Ardwick, Manchester.
    More than 17 miles of film will be used to cover the entire train fleet with around 180sqm being applied to each individual train, roughly the same size as a four-bed detached house.

      Historically it was a legal requirement. It's likely because the class 185 doesn't have the correct headlamps to be visible enough without them.

      It depends where you came from. If from London, it would be a Hull trains unit, which are 180s. If you came on a 185, it could have either been a few weeks ago since they have only just started the 350s (I believe two have been done, 350401 and 350407, but not sure) Sometimes companies overlap the different rolling stock, for example VTEC repainted their first HST in June 2015, when there were still a few grey 91s going about

    If rail franchises spent less of their budget on overly complex liveries, they'd have more to spend on seating.....and actually endeavouring to provide comfortable and durable seats in their trains. Instead they have to skimp on seating and end up installing rigid 'ironing board' seats in all their trains.
    You won't find seats like this on any train in mainland Europe. Because they wouldn't allow such seats.
    Funny how as a nation we still haven't got that the customer should ALWAYS be the priority. ALWAYS!!! NOT the shareholders.
    Rail franchises: keep the liveries very simple, don't be clever and try and overcomplicate them. If you did this, then you'd have more money to spend on seating..... quality, ergonomic seating. Because this is what REALLY matters to customers - not super snazzy liveries. The seating is the ONE thing that is essential to get right. It's more important than anything else.

    I would love to know how much this is unnecessary rebranding will cost, as it's money that could be spent improving frontline services for passengers. It's still a First franchise so there's no need to change it.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 Před 7 lety +7

      It's because that before it was a First/Keolis partnership and now it is fully First so they want to change their brand. They're doing this across all their franchises, look at GWR for example

    • @DJenerate
      @DJenerate Před 7 lety +8

      That doesn't make much sense though, it's going from partly owned by First, to fully owned, so they're using *less* First branding? Surely it'd be the other way around.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 Před 7 lety +6

      Daniel James No, ever since the major issues on FGW with overcrowding and strikes 10 years ago ( a bit like Southern), whenever the franchise has changed they’ve started to remove their brand for a more unique image. I like it since it’s better than just seeing purple everywhere, this time you see some variety. They first did it with FGW at the end of 2015, when it became GWR, then Transpennine in April 2016, and when they take over South West Trains later this issue, there’s rumour going round that it may be LSWR, rather than First branded

    Overweight and overpowered, unable to use Sprinter line speeds, significant increase in fuel supply compared to Class 158 units and they also lose two seats per coach due to Siemens designing the exhaust to take up part of the interior space. Not a good unit and one that will be hard to cascade as they get older. Back in 2004\2005 Class 170 units would have been far better as an order than these non-standard heavy units.
