Suzuki SV2200L Generator Sitting 20 Years First Start

  • I bought this generator new back in '79 or '80 from a cousin that was the local Suzuki dealer. It was used consistently on new construction projects including the building of my own home. Since then it was only used sporadically the most recent being at least 20 to 25 years ago. It has been sitting on blocks under the bench since that time. I thought I'd drained the fuel tank, but found out today I did not. At that point the thought was that this thing is NOT going to be running today. At least not without considerable effort !!
    Oxygenated fuels began to be produced around the fall of 1992, but normal gasoline was still plentiful and available at many stations for a long time. Little did we know the problems right around the corner with fully 'formulated' fuels, one mixture for the summer blend and another for the winter blend. Fortunately for me, the tank of this little generator was (totally by accident) filled with normal gasoline and not formulated fuel, because this fuel did not destroy the interior of the fuel tank, carburetor or any portion of the fuel system sitting undisturbed all those years. I'm sure the octane has been drastically reduced by the long period of time, but it did not draw moisture into the tank and create rust and oxidation. Had this sat with an alcohol blended fuel for that length of time, there would have been a major problem with the fuel system.
    As an afterthought, I am totally sure I can drop this fuel into the tank of one of the old Massey Harris tractors, dilute it with 5 gallons of fresh gas and the tractor would not be measurably affected. Now mind you, I would never consider running this gas in a good chain saw or other small engine nor would I venture to drop it into the Missus' pretty blue Subaru....but I would one of the 70 year old machines.
    Luckily, once the carb is removed and found to pass air through the needle and seat and conversely stop the flow when inverted, the decision was made to reassemble the carb to the manifold WITHOUT disassembling and servicing. The reason being a deteriorated portion of the cast aluminum body of the carb at the point of contact where the steel float bowl comes into contact. I'm afraid disassembly will result in a much more difficult task to get it to not leak. The decision is then made to attempt a quick start just to see if it will. What a surprise...it fires and runs at half choke on the third pull !! #suzuki, #generator, #SV2200L

      I was more surprised than you I bet !! It was always an easy start machine, but this was just ridiculous. It was just lucky that I'd ran the carb completely empty back then. The gas was so old it's not the fancy blended fuels we have now and I almost think it would run on that old stuff. But I know the octane is way low. But I may just dump it into one of the old Masseys.

    Awesome you got luck for your generator. That a good thing it started on the third pull . 😊

      No one was more surprised than I Leonard. The gas is so old, it wasn't the new blended gases so there is apparently no accumulation of crud and oxidation inside the carb. I decided to just re-install it and give it a try because I could blow through the needle/seat and main jet without an air compressor.

      Believe me, this was an extreme rarity. I almost NEVER get by without cleaning the fuel system. Firsthand evidence of the old gas not destroying the insides of a tank or carb !! A fella won't get away with this with the new formulated fuel or ethanol blends.

    Good job buddy started up real fast after twenty years. Knock on wood we don’t need your generator to much lately for power fingers crossed but a few years ago that wasn’t the case we had a ice storm probably eight years ago and had no power for six days I was on the road but came home to keep the fridges and freezer running thank god for the generator. We are spoiled now that’s how people lived back years ago and no generator I think my parents said and this maybe a lie I think they got electricity here in 1952 i think and at was a good year when I was born lol have a great day buddy hope you guys are doing well take care

      Hot dang Tom, we ARE all spoiled this day and time, that's for sure !! The longest we were out of power was about 4 or 5 days back in an ice storm....pre generator. We were lucky, having electricity for many years before I was born. My dad and his one older brother had to set the poles themselves to get power up to the barn and sheds waaaaaayyyyy back in time !! It WAS a different world back then. For sure. I was a '51 baby.....So you're just a kid to me. LOL

      I vaguely recall sometime back in the '80's clearing some sludge from the main jet, but it never quite wanted to run without a bit of a choke. The big problem today is finding the foam filter. If necessary, I'll have to cut my own out of some foam material.

    Great job. You may be able to remove the drain plug on the carb and spray carb cleaner. You can remove the idle valve and blow back through it to stop having to use the chock ?? Ah this is one of the days I have trouble with words. As always I liked and shared. All my very best to you and yours.

      I'm a little short on time for the Memorial Day camping so I'll just give him a can of SeaFoam to run through with a few tanks of gas. Maybe that'll take care of it....if not, well it'll be time to get serious about doing a more thorough job on it. Thanks Bobby for the suggestion and I do believe you are on the right track.

    Actually it doesn't surprise me at all that it started that good. Emptying the carb on shut down makes all the difference in the world. I would have expected corroded points to be the main issue. Anyway, it's a good feeling when something works out better than expected.

      One of the coolest things happened to 2 and 4 stroke small engines in the mid to late 70's and that's the pointless ignition systems. But yes, normally the problem on a bit older machine is gonna be oxidation on the contact surfaces of the points in addition to fuel delivery problems.

    Ive converted 2 things so far to propane.
    The environment that hits the dew point regularly, really affects the ethanol fuel.
    87 octane no ethanol is about $5 as high as $7 for 92
    Propane is about $2.70

    Hey tractorman 44
    I love watching your videos
    I picked up a 1975 international Cub that has wiring fiddled with and changed years ago. I believe it originally came with a neutral safety starting contraption, but most of that is gone, I am just wanting to have it start and run like my 67 does although this has a three position keyed starter switch.
    Do you know where I could find a wiring diagram to straighten this mess out?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 3 měsíci

      I have a good one I used for a 72 Ford 2000. But its a total rewire with new alternator and adding voltmeter while eliminating the ammeter. You may be able to adapt the pertinent info from that one for yours. I don't recall if this one had a three position switch though. Here it is here: czcams.com/video/PXIh78bDr0U/video.html. I would think the first click energizes the ignition and charging circuit and the second (spring loaded) click engages the solenoid for the starter then releases it as it springs back, but the first click remains energized for the ignition/charging system until the key is turned off.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The gaskets are so thin whether its a flat material or O-ring that there's no way the dissimilars metals can be kept completely apart !! They just gotta touch at least a little bit. So yes, I think that's what's happened. I hate to disturb it because it'll have to built back up with two part epoxy or liquid metal and filed down. I don't want to do it unless I have no other option. Good thoughts Jeremy, Thank you.
