Don't know how I managed to miss this , but I've only recently found this beauty - cant stop playing it . One of the few benefits of an addictive personality ....
Don Robertson wrote some of the greatest songs in the world for Elvis Presley. This is one of them. Don originated the so-called slip-note piano sound that Floyd Cramer made famous in the song "Last Date". Whether the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra added to the original version or not is for the listener to decide for themselves. Personally, I love both recordings. The song speaks for itself and the Elvis interpretation is beautiful enough to bring a tear to your eye. The once and future King of Rock and Roll. Elvis will live in our hearts forever. Thank you God for letting us have him, even it was for too short of time.
I believe our Elvis died with a big wound in his heart. The emptiness, for he was famous and also from loving family. He was human and deserved to have a wife by his side to understand his fame ❤️❤️❤️
He had the world in the palm of his hands & threw it all away. Deprived us all of another 35/40 years of this man's generosity and loving. Get off the pills and change the manager, that's all he had to do and can guarantee he'd have traveled the world about 15x over, bigger fan base than he ever had, duet with stars - likes of Roy O, Tom Jones, Paul Mccartney, appeared on TV chat shows, movies..... the list is endless. In his defense he came into this business that nobody has ever seem to hit the levels of, only the beatles come close, in 33 movies which I doubt no other singer has ever done & 22 years had number 1s galore which has taken singers alive over 3/4 decades to beat. He's the greatest but could have been more, MUCH more
Can't understand how Elvis who was blessed with a heavenly voice and oh so handsome looks who most men would give anything for. Yet he died young and alone. I just can't understand it.
I love the songs Don Robertson wrote for Elvis. Gentle ballads all: I'm counting on you, There's always me, Starting today, & this one, to name but four.
In this song, as in several others, the vocal power of this Magician of the Art of Interpretation is presented in a splendid, majestic, incomparable way, in short...
The new orchestral accompaniment gets in the way of the delicacy of the song. The original, stark piano accompaniment was perfect. An example of more is less.
I Agree With You Ray!! This May Sound Beautiful To Some But Elvis Knew What To Do With His Music And He Has Heart and Emotion In His Songs, Unfortunately The Orchestra Kind Of Drowns His Voice Out And It Sounds Terrible. The Only Good In This Version Is Elvis' Voice......Best To Leave The Masterpiece Alone!! As I Said Before, Elvis Knew What To Do With His Songs And I Tell Ya, He Could Sing As Though He Was Singing Only To You.....That Is What This Version Is Missing. I Understand Why They Created This Album In Order To Keep Elvis Current And Produce Album Sales!! Ya Just Can't Mess With Perfection!! 'May God Bless You As He Has Blessed Me'..........EP Adios - TCB⚡ TLC⚡
I feel same...his voice is drown out on several of the songs. I think American Trilogy was destroyed. IMO, the power is not there--it got lost on that song. I believe Elvis would be honored to sing with the RPO, but I think a few of the songs would sound quite different.
I tend to favor the less is more, lol. But this does a good job of representing Elvis' vocal sensitivity. It doesn't drown out his voice like some people are saying, its pretty good IIMO
I like the orginial better. I donot believe Elvis would approve of anybody messing w his music. He liked things just how he did them. ELVIS knew music. a did things his way.
The only two things that Elvis would have disapproved of was Lisa Marie marrying Michael Jackson and secondly of Priscilla giving away his money to that scumbag organization called scientology
Early sixties Elvis's boys was at his best he could hit the pretty high notes like no other time in his career from 60 to 64 always a great singer but his best singing was in the early sixties I like the arrangement with the music in this with original music with his voice in 61 was a little better
Why the abuse towards Ray? He didn't say that he hated this version, he merely expressed a point of view that the original, clear piano arrangement made the song. I agree. It gives the song purity. Sometimes too much is too much.
The original (untouched) version is better . The orchestra drowns out both the great piano of Floyd Crammer , and the fabulous Jordanaires back up vocals . The addition of the Philharmonic Orchestra to songs like Love Me Tender , works well because there is very little accompaniment to drown out .
Actually, the song's writer Don Robertson played the piano on this recording for the "Pot Luck" album. Don invented the so-called "Slip-Note" style of piano that Cramer made famous on the million-seller "Last Date". Robertson played on several of Elvis' recordings and wrote 14 songs that Elvis recorded dating back to 1956 with the song "I'm Counting On You".

I like the original better. for someone that was forced to marry I must say. he looked happy a gorgeous. they looked alike back when. too bad he couldn't hold her for long. but his heart never stopped loving her a Lisa he loved them deeply.
The pictures in this video do not match with the the feelings of the song it's a song full of sorrow and regret and I agree with the ones that say that it was dedicated to his mother.
It's a feeling, this song could be in every Vid with love in it ..... Just because it was for his mother .... Elvis looked always for a girlfriend who looks and felt likes his mother .... But its ok your opinion my choice of vid .......
@@MauriceImportaMagne Sorry, Maurice, I didn't want to criticize you.He found something of his mother in any any important girl he met, I think that Priscilla had nothing like Gladys.I even dare to say that if Gladys might have known Priscilla for a while, she would have not liked her and not for the blue eyes that she recommended his son to avoid Ciao!

my opinion ..his voice was so perfect ..didn't need anything else..........
His gyrating pelvis was an added bonus for everyone’s enjoyment!

Ray Connolly will bet anything that's Floyd Cramer on piano..but I agree with u
IcanFartLOUD 1 agree....love the Floyd Cramer on piano..but on most of those with rpo..less is more with exception of "burning love"

Elvis is still directing the music. The orchestra is following his voice.

I prefer the original background and arrangement to this Philharmonic elevator sound..antithesis of Elvis
