The new Supra with the BMW engine is better than any Supra ever built before it. Not sure how calling the new Supra a Supra tarnishes the name. However, the MkIV(JZA80) Supra will always be a favorite street/strip vehicle for me but it's a different class of car. The JZA80 was a gran touring type car, the new Supra is a dedicated sportscar. It's like the difference between an RB-powered GT-R and the new VR-powered GT-Rs. They are much different vehicles from different generations of technology. Toyota is no longer setup to produce an engine or vehicle platform for a low-production volume sportscar. If this Supra wasn't manufacturerd by BMW, there would be no fifth-gen Supra. @@tsdelosa

Quote" But before Calty even created the FT-1 for the 2014 stage, there had already been high-level meetings with BMW regarding the cars' fundamental engineering and packaging. Concept cars are usually built larger than life for the show stage, to impress showgoers, Hunter said, but then they have to shrink down for the realities of the world. "If you look at the FT-1 concept car, it's a pretty big car, actually, and we purposely blew it up to be a true exotic," he said. "The reality of the [Supra's] packaging is, it's actually a very good, nice, proper package for a sports car, for a high-performance sports car. So we had to figure out how to capture all the essence of FT-1 but get it down into the compact packaging of the actual engineering condition."
quote"At the center of the transition from FT-1 concept to the production car code-named A90, Calty senior lead designer Tom Matsumoto was embedded for six months with the Munich-based BMW/Toyota team under project chief designer Nobuo Nakamura.
Matsumoto explained the most difficult parts of translating the FT-1 to Supra: "Making a concept is coming from nothing to something in life, from zero to one. Then the production phase is taking that all the way to a condition that people could drive. There's a lot of safety requirements in every country and everything that you have to go through to get that right." www.motortrend.com/news/2020-toyota-supra-design-ft-1-concept-to-production
Toyota debuted the FT-1 Concept in 2014 which is when they and BMW broke away from each other www.motor1.com/news/266852/supra-engineers-last-talked-bmw-2014/
Quote " “We agreed on the packaging, like where is the hip-point of the driver, what's the wheelbase, the width, where's the fuel tank, where's the A-pillar, this was around the middle of 2014... After that we completely separated our team. After that, no communication with each other.”
Which means Toyota and BMW had already come up with the dimensions of the platform which is all-new for Z4 and Supra before the FT-1 Concept came out in 2014 and they had to shrink everything down to retain spirt of the Concept ,if that makes any sense

@@tyerex5031 Wow. Now tell me how much business Ford and Chevy currently have? Last I heard Chevy was shutting down plants in Asia and in the US. Sorry. They do not sell.
Europe and Japan are tiny markets compared to the America's, Middle East and Russia where autos are primarily sold. In Europe and Japan Automatics are luxury items. It is cheaper to buy a manual especially for econobox's there. You're equating the sales of manual transmission sports cars to economy cars that are cheaper to manufacture with a manual.
Global statistics show a drop in manual sales across the board. But keep telling me more on how you know so much about this industry.
Emissions regulations have also forced auto's to be more prevalent.
3% of cars sold in the US in 2016 have been manuals. If you know anything about business you'd know why its a bad model. But yeah, you can keep hoping. It isn't happening and that's pretty clear.

    • @tyerex5031
      @tyerex5031 Před 5 lety +4

@@d1sturb3d119 You made a broad statement -"NOBODY buys manuals". So I gave you a broad answer. What does Chevy and Ford plants closing over seas and emissions regulations have to do with Toyota not offering the Supra a manual, seriously I'm not being sarcastic, I dont understand.
Your argument is about percentages and business models. By your logic manuals are impractical. Well the sport car is entirely impractical that caters to the smallest buyer market.
Obviously major manufacturers focus more on their bread and butter - SUVs, Trucks, Sedans, Commercial vehicles. They understand what their producing in a sports car. It's not about the biggest buyer market, it's about making an absurd fun enthusiast toy for the smallest market. It's about showing what their company can accomplish, what their engineers can do, it's a statement. Brand image. That's my argument.
Toyota forgot that when they didnt offer an already able manual for it and they got called out for it so much that it's the number one question Tatsuya Tada gets about the Supra. Hes now saying the overwhelming outcry is making him consider putting the manual option back on the table. I'm not saying make them all manual, do both. Hell make the manual by customer order only.
Lastly I dont get why it upsets you by what other people want. It doesn't affect you. Buy the automatic.

    • @d1sturb3d119
      @d1sturb3d119 Před 5 lety +3

@@tyerex5031 The fact that they're shutting down is proof that they've mis-assessed the market. No, by my logic manuals would be the only way to go. I do not like a lack of engagement and I think that most people in the US are morons on the road because they have one more thing to disconnect them from driving.
The facts still stand that building a car for the sake of an engineering exercise costs a company money and in most cases does not pay back. The LFA lost money on every car sold and in fact was still too expensive for most of the enthusiast market. Was it exceptional? Yes absolutely! The old supra was literally out of production by the time every fan boy on earth suddenly started to claim its the greatest car ever.
The bread and butter for these companies is to build cars that appeal to a mass market. Sports cars unfortunately do not sell as well as they do. The buying power of most folks are diminished significantly.
To architect and build a transmission that can slot into the supra frame, mate with the motor, and still be a part of the same assembly line is cumbersome and adds overhead to the cost of these cars.
Would I like the option? Absolutely! Do they sell? In small numbers that do not justify the cost of developing an assembly line system that can facilitate the option. That is the core issue.
Lexus never offered manuals for a reason. Toyota has been moving away from manuals as well for a reason. Suffice to say the market doesn't support it.
Chevy, Ford and Dodge with the type of architecture employed in their sports car line up can facilitate it but look at the sales figures for their sports cars. Its a bleak market and given the lack of dominance in the SUV/ Minivan market, we them shutting down plants, axing jobs and eventually coming to the tax payer for a bailout. The reality of this segment is that this is not a valid ask any more.
Stop freaking out at the company. Freak out at the buyers who want easier cars to drive.
Those of us who want manuals swap them for the most part.

Please tell Tatsuya Tada, neither A86 or the BMW Z4 are true Toyota's.
True Toyota fans are disappointed that Toyota have sold their sole, first to Subaru and then to BMW.
Tell him putting a Toyota badge on a BMW does NOT make it a Toyota.
I'm sure I am not the only one who is disappointed that Toyota has prostituted their Supra name to BMW... disappointed, very disappointed.
I will agree it is a wonderful looking car and I understand from all reports, it is a very good car, but it is NO Supra.

@@geoffmcheyzer9821 Quite the opposite, the short sighted ones will believe all the rhetoric coming from Toyota about the new BWM they are selling as a car badged as a Supra. I've also searched for the meaning of RETARTED... but you have me on that one... LoL...

The new supra is an epic FAIL
No manual transmission, no targa top.
Short base chassis: not good for high acceleration in aggressive boost.
Small designe: smaller than a 370Z and narrower than a GT86.
Fake vents: leads to nothing especially the door’s. Every car has fake vents that can be worked out by tuning companies (not a feature in the Supra).
complicated engine: expensive to repair, and unreliable.
Auto transmission: unfunny, underpowered and unreliable.
