    You should never clean the cylinder head and engine block deck with a scotch bright pad it creates low spot inperfections.

      Not sure that I approve. This engine called for a thorough valve job at minimum. A wet/dry compression test would have revealed the condition of the piston rings. If all yo7 want to do is “get the motor running” as Steppinwolf said, then ok, but taking the head off is more than halfway to a valve job/piston ring overhaul.

    I am following you for some time and really apreciate help from your videos. I have 2015 Verado 225 with 1000 hours, bought it with 200 hours. In few past days I felt that on idle motor shakes a bit, rpm is good, stays calm. In gear shakes a little untill gets more throttle and then normal up to 5500 rpm. When I changed spark plugs motor was in water, so when I took out 3rd plug I could hear air draught through chylinder while sea was going up and down through the leg and exhaust. Is this normal because exhaust valve is open in that moment or there should not be air through cylinder when plug is out? I felt this only on 3rd cylinder. Should I do compression or leak test? I cleaned injectors, changed plugs, all fuel filters... thanks for advices

      @@KillinTimeHuntingFishing thanks for the input. I’ll check it, but I don’t think it’s the case because when trimmed all the way down and even when Captain Kevin took it out and gradually sped it up to plane, once the rpm’s get to @4k it starts jumping around looking for a place to settle in. If that makes sense. Driving me nuts bc I’m not sure if it’s killing my fuel consumption, or doing other damage. Plus it’s a new boat for me. It’s flawless except for this issue.

    I have a dinosaur 1986 Mercury black max 150 hp two stroke. I can't even believe this thing is still running 😂 and the compression is still up there close to original when new. I suspect the top end was redone. On the left bank of cylinders there's a white part number written with an indelible white ink. Anyway this thing is a beast on my 19' CC. It's so loud though all you hear is exhaust notes and typical slight vibration of a two stroke. About all I can really focus on is the sound at start up and idle smoothness as well as WOT smoothness. I don't care though I love old two strokes and you can't even come close to the power to weight ratios with a expensive new 4 stroke. Plus whose going to keep the mosquitoes down if we get rid of all the two strokes 😂

    How many hours on that motor ? Did they periodically use any fuel treatment?

    You’ll never make me believe that you only charged a customer $300 for this fix. Maybe a close friend or family member with that brother in law price.

      Im assuming it's 300 in materials. Bc im a boat mechanic and i know it will definitely be more than that.

    As a former aircraft mechanic, but in my defense, I worked on turbines, I can't figure out how the leak down differs from a compression test. Obviously not the test, but what would a compression test tell us about a leaking head? Or.. would it not locate it accurately??

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  Před rokem +1

      It doesn't work the same because there is a check valve in the compression tester hose that allows the pressure to build in the gauge with every stroke. Then holds it there to get the compression reading. The leak down doesn't have a valve and puts pressure in the cylinder

    • @znogaragego3421
      @znogaragego3421 Před rokem +1

      Momentary vs continuous. You need a constant flow(leak down) of air to pinpoint a leak. Also all valves need to be in closed position.
      If you hear/see air leaking through:
      1. Exhaust = exhaust valve issue
      2. Intake/throttle body = intake valve issue
      3. Cooling/coolant = head gasket
      4. Crankcase/dipstick = piston rings.

      @8180634 Před rokem +1

      From the 100' view they can both diagnose a low compression problem, but the leakdown tester provides a steady stream of air that can help you more easily diagnose exactly where the air is leaking. Also a compression test result can vary by the cranking speed, throttle position, etc.. and the leakdown result will be more consistent because the stream of air is regulated and always the same.
