Test of linearity is also termed as test of model appropriateness.
In a model with only first power of independent variables, test of appropriateness of model is to test if there is higher power of the variables omitted in the equation.
It is implemented by using component-plus-residual plots (also known as partial residual plots).
In R, the plot is produced by the crPlots() function in the car package.
