I was raised on camcorders, and I want to stick with it. But, you're exactly right... their technology has hit a dead end, while mirrorless/cinema options are now soaring. I hope camcorders catch up, but for now it looks like most wildlife filmmakers are up a creek. Thanks for the update... I'll try to choose wisely for my upcoming projects! 🤙
I film sport, Camcorders all the way.
I don't know what your definition of tech is but... I have the XF605, R5C, and C70. The Canon XF605 does provide a great image. They cannot put a sensor and chipset in a camcorder like the cinema line. If they did the camcorder would be over $20k easily. The smaller sensor allows for the zoom of the camcorder. The XF605 has similar video codecs, formats, focusing system, and more that the C70 and R5c have. Now, low light, nahhh camcorders are not used for that. People really underestimate the XF605
Now, if Canon made a lens that had a zoom range like the XF605 with a rocker that could go on cinema cameras, that would be a game changer. Canon made two lenses like that. They sucked and range was not good. The price would be astronomical.
They do seem to work better for sports action. I'm toggling between the two during events. It's just too bad they can't put slightly better sensors in them. My DSLRs and the Z9 videos are so much more colorful. @@DuffTV
Camcorders and Cinema are two different animals. I use them both.

Bei letzteren fehlen mir die Schmellzugrifftasten und die PRO Anschlüsse derartig dass ich sie ungern nutze, Sensor hin oder her. Und: für Reportagen, streaming usw. sind Camcorder die erste Wahl. Schnell bereit, alles auf einen Griff einstellbar, leicht - perfekt.

Love your videos bro. Your honesty is appreciated. I really wanted to buy the xf605 because I need to zoom far in and out very quickly without changing lenses. And I'm really upset at how poor the image quality is on these Canon camcorders. I currently own a C200, C70, 1DXII, and and R6. And the image quality on all of these cameras is amazing compared to the Canon camcorders. Real bummer.
I understand your frustration with noise in your videos. I had the same issue when I bought the Sony FDR-AX100. I ended up sending back two cameras because of this issue. The majority of my videos are filmed in low light conditions. I just upgraded all my gear. I got the Sony FX6 for filming videos in low light. I also got the Sony A7R5 for pictures, and filming 8K videos. The FX6 is one of the best low light camcorders you can buy in that price range.
I was wondering what brilliant new camcorder you'd found! I completely understand your decision. You have really lifted your production standards. Extremely well done mate. It's clearly professional quality work - even what we can see here on CZcams. I can only imagine how good the original footage is - it must be stunning. We are still using camcorders because of ease of use, stabilisation (and price) are our main priorities. Image quality is not the priority for us - but I keep eyeing those new Sony FX30's . . . I have a 605 and haven’t seen any noise. Maybe a problem with the unit you received.
You are right about the daylight noise. I thought it was just me. Like you said - gain at zero, bright sun, and the playback showed noise. I pre-ordered Canon XF400 and used it to film in the mountains on bright days. Could not understand how there was noise. Tried to troubleshoot like you did. Same findings. That was around the time I discovered your channel. I was searching for Canon camcorders and you had a video about needing night footage. The 4k in XF705 would have been ideal but the price was too high for what they wanted. I said whoa this guy is right on. I figured you were the only CZcamsr on the XF705 conversation who wasn't posting affiliate links. At the time, the camera had not been released yet and I think you actually were the only person with a video about XF705 who wasn't trying to kiss up to Canon. I respected that you told the truth. Thought to myself hmm. Maybe that was why this guy is telling the truth. It's neat to see how your story has developed. On my end, I spent so much money buying piece-meal mirrorless accessories that eventually I sold what I could, bought a shoulder cam with a B4 servo lens. It's exactly what I needed this whole time for wildlife. I realize now that the mirrorless with accessories costs more than a sticker-shock shoulder camera and super lens. Obviously the manufacturers figured that out a long time ago. I blame it on Canon for making the $10,000 C100 before Sony was ready to answer back with a comparable product, prompting them to counter by setting the industry back nearly a decade (in camera usability) with this damn 4K nonsense before there was a way to handle it on the electronics/computational side in form factor as we knew it. Anyway, I'm at peace with my gear now (one camera/lens to rule them all). I can finally film the local wildlife as I have wanted to do for so many years. Saves me a lot of time, not having to watch so many CZcams reviews anymore. I still come back to watch your videos. You are a talented filmmaker and I have tremendous respect for your craft. I use both as well. Canon R5c, Sony fx6, Red Komodo, xf605 and DJI Ronin 4d 8K. After being in business for 35 years, I have a diverse clientele. And several clients have broad needs where I’m on a cinema camera one moment and the xf605 the next.

That was my initial thought too: the Canon C70--or maybe even the C200, with its recent price drop. But, it sounds like Derek may have actually tried the C70 (11:30) and found its image quality to be inferior to the R5C for his requirements.
I suggest considering investing into a digital cinema camera system such as Canon's Cinema eos, Sony, Red, zcam, kinefinity, and arri
Many thanks Derek for sharing your "journey"! I have both those very camcorders in front of me right now. In fact, I'm about to take the FX300 out to get to use it once again after quite a while. I mostly used to use it for talking heads and narrative-style shoots, when the conditions were very controllable. I've also been pondering on getting a mirrorless camera, and the new Lumix seems to be getting good reviews.Unfortunately as you pointed out, it doesn't end with the camera - it's all the ancillary gear to make it work to one's requirements...
May be a large image sensor camcorder with interchangable lens like the Sony FX 6 could be a choise for You?

I chose the Canon XA50 and purchased it today. My needs were "in studio" and streaming wherever I chose. I like to go motorcycle camping and am equipped to live stream out in the woods if I so choose to. But until I actually get my hands on my camera, I won't be able to decide if I bought correctly. But if you have some advice for me, I'd love to hear it. Thanks so much for posting this video.
I recently picked up a Canon G70, it works well some some things. I wish it had better color.
@MikeOrazzi 2 main reasons I bought the XA50: a 1" sensor and it came with a small remote controller. I considered the XA70 but it wasn't compatible with the small remote.
I went with the G70, for price, I guess. I'm using it for sports mainly, I found the DSLRs kind of slow, but then I also just bought a Nikon Z9, so that may make the G70 not seem so good anymore. How is the sensor on the XA70?@@smilingscottsman
Hi, I got pointed to your video as I am looking to upgrade to a budget cinema camera like the Canon C100 II.
I am using a Sony NX70 camcorder for a decade, I like it as a package, weather proofed as well, but the image from the 1/2.88" no longer keep up in the 2020's.
I've also dabbled with Canon 5D III on magic lantern, but like the mirrorless option, it can only work for short clips.
I don't really need 4k, how do you think of the older C100 II compared to R5C or even the C70?

I think you hit the nail on the head when you say (old ) C100 II maybe to old , but they are a cheaper than the C70 and R5c . The C100 II might be ok for you but for me the C70 is a fantastic camera for filming people because its a softer image for more placing looking skin . The R5c has a sharper image and a fall frame sensor giving me awesome low light capability and 16 stops of WDR making it a fantastic Wildlife camera + 45 megapixel stills . For me the R5c wins hand down . If you like camcorder you might like the canon XF400 I own one and it might be a good option for you , its small and easy to us and has a great 4k image .

Is the XF400 same quality as Canon XA40 but with dual pixel autofocus?
XA models are more common here, and only slightly cheaper than a C100 II used (but it is an apple/orange comparison anyway I know)

Very underrated model despite limitation of the 1 inch sensor
Interesting journey! No idea why, but all the companies who do camcorders, Sony, Canon and Panasonic, seem to putting much better sensors in their Mirrorless/Cinema hybrids, and leaving their camcorders behind... DSLRs are going to be pretty much just collectibles soon. I actually chose Nikon for filming, just because their glass is so, so good. The Z9 sensor is incredible, and the camera battery life is great. For low light it's great too.

Canon will not put 35 mm sensors in the camcorders ,they wont you to buy the cinema range for that .

it's about sensor size and aperture. with a fixed lens that must do telephoto in reasonable size body you have to accept 1" sensor and something like F/4 aperture. that can't compete with Full Frame sensor and F/2.8 aperture. this is why smartphones now have three cameras - it's the same reason why photographers have three main lenses in their bag ( wide, standard and telephoto ). because one do-it-all lens is too much of a compromise where you have a giant lens that barely captures any light. this used to be acceptable before 4K video and when large sensors were out of reach in terms of price. but now that full frame sensors are affordable and everybody is using 4K that pretty much spells doom for camcorders except for electronic news gathering - like filming some riot where you're more concerned about being able to run fast than getting good image quality.

I just don't understand why neither of the big corporations that make this plastic things are listening only youtubers. I just want a big APSC sensor camera in the body of small xa75 for example, with a removable lens. Sony done it 13 years ago with the VG-90, but nobody does it now. It's a shame that they can make the perfect camcoder but they don't want. Big companies don't want to protect nature resources, but we will eat bugs instead to protect the funky planet. .....
Panasonic made an AF100, later DVX200 in m43 sensor. JVC came out with a super 35 LS300, this one came with relevant streaming function even.
They all failed, why? Market forces.
Yup they are good, there are products that satisfied what people said they want, but not much people buy it.
Realistically, camcorder market is a niche, people rather buy a phone that takes video over a camera then over a camcorder.
there will be no perfect video camera with a large sensor, it will be inferior in many respects to conventional video cameras on a small sensor, as was the case with the VG series
@@csamd9049 for things we mostly do I agree somewhat, but these days I think it is actually possible to have m43 sensor in camcorder format as now they are available with BSI sensor.
They really need to work on autofocus and stabilization. I think they pretty much achieve it on GH6, but unfortunately I don't think they are interested in camcorder these days.
@@wckoek The GH6 is an ordinary still camera with huge limitations in video shooting. It is much better to make video cameras on small video sensors. There is something to develop.
@@csamd9049 there is still limitation to quality, I am happy with the XC10 I just got but have to agree that it just wasn't up there with "pro" cameras like C100, Blackmagic, and the like. GH6 was closer albeit some limitation in terms of form factor.
Camcorder is great, but like I said, despite attempts from JVC, Panasonic, they didn't try it hard enough to make the potential happen.
