D'Angelo played the covers for a reason. Of course, he wasn't ready to showcase what he had stored (Black Messiah). Not only does these covers represent the whole creative process but to give you a dose of where he was gonna go with Black Messiah. What he did on Black Messiah of course was soulful but it was a progression of Funk and Rock! This set represents that! If you don't understand this set then it's possible you won't understand Black Messiah. Cause the Funk or Chocolate Rock direction is where he's at right now.
best comment yet. so true.
Oh, GOSH thank you for saying that
Well said!
yep
IJ Rogers DITTO!
He’s celebrating and paying homage to those who paved the way for him. Those who have inspired him and molded his sound. He’s a melting pot of those before him and is respecting those who made it possible for an AFROPUNK like himself to exist.
Amanda Hawkins Great comment, very well said..
AMEN 2 THAT SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE is paying homage to Lucifers love the devil... now repent
DeAngelo is in a class by himself a lot of people overlooked his musical talent because they portrayed him as a sex symbol

I like when artist refuse to be put in a box. Talent. Real talent is unpredictable and ever expanding. D'Angelo is the ish! :D
And he's scrumptiously thick. There's that too. ;)
Shukrani Gray AND he's the only person that can cover Prince and do it right. The ONLY one.
+Shukrani Gray the absolute ONLY!
Its 2024 and seeing this for the first time is therapy for me.

Thanks very much for posting the set list!🔥
Still can't believe I saw this live
the Bob Marley cover was genius
Royal George I was looking for this comment
Omg, he killed it! Would make Bob Marley so proud.
highlight of a fantastic set, imo
Yass enjoyed that!!
The Ohio Players cover is nuts! You don't hear R&B dudes with that old school growl anymore. High pitch soft voices can be nice, but there's nothing like that growl, that emotion.
Say that!
Can’t stop listening to this🔥🔥🔥
You all can put your phones down, the video is on CZcams.
This version of Burning and Looting is out of this world.
This is the best concert video on YT imo, I watch it at least once every few months. A great band covering some of the most underrated black music ever created, plus one underrated D'Angelo joint thrown in for good measure. The groove on "Burnin' & Lootin'" is worth the price of admission alone.
If you are a REAL fan of any artist, you don't care about what they play, when you get to see them live. And in this particular case, the set is MASSIVE, so if all you can think about is shouting out requests, you have no passion for music, you are just one of the many music -fashion victims. Experiencing this sort of musicianship live should be a privilege. Complainers, stay home and play a David Hasselhoff cd (no offence to David )
I totally agree. They sounded like drunken fools. Instead they should have just enjoyed the opportunity to see D'Angelo perform live from an almost decade long hiatus, despite his Europe tours in 2012 and 2013. Most of his shows in the U.S. were cancelled in 2013 due to illness.
Thank You!!!! I HATE when people say they were at show, and it was good But...the artist didn't play such and such song. Lol Yo...you're there to experience whatEVER that artist gives...as long as it's good of course.
what hasslehoff has music out?
woh
This show felt so insane live. It felt like butterflies were rushing up and down and through my soul. It's truly inexplicable. I got all of my life. I really really hope he goes on a tour of some sorts because I want to feel it again.
All those UNTHANKFUL demands of "Brown Sugar"...
I thoroughly enjoyed that they went into "THANKFUL"
"Ya'lls Oughta Be.... THANKFUL!"
Perfect.
I know I’m 7 years late but fricken HONESTLY!!! I listen to this on the way to work every other day & forget it’s live until that one drunk idiot screams “PLAY BROWN SUGAR” like dude… s h u t u p P L E A S E
D' angelo bringing the Black Music Genre back full Circle and speaking to the Masses, the Culture. Hope they can hear him!
wow it is UNREAL how much Questlove is driving the bus here. Awesome to witness
A very astute comment. I noticed that as well.
Just can't stop to replay "our love has died"...
It’s 2021 and this is the coolest thing I’ve seen...🔥🔥🔥 af
Dude did Greatdayndamornin'. Not sure if/when/how many times he's performed that song live. That was good damn enough for me.
He's performed it next to none so this clip is a blessing
That’s one ☝🏾 of my favorite songs for the drum section at the end of studio version.
Totally got chills hearing them perform "Black Flowers" D'Angelo looks like he's having the most fun…love it.
The background singers are cold as fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Str8 holding it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can listen to D'Angelo 24 hours!!
Agreed 👍🏾
i remember there was something wrong with the sound system or something. we stood there for an hour when D was supposed to come on at like 8. we just stood and waited. everybody was getting antsy and annoyed not because we had to wait, but because no one said anything about the reason why.
And then Captain Kirk came out. Quest came out after him. and then there he was. all the anger and frustration from before disappeared in an instant. it was one of the best shows I'd ever been to.
I was there!!!! My My My...we had to leave because we had to catch our flight home early the next morning. Hate we missed this
I come back to this every few months usually around the same time late at night #soulrefresh
Through his own extraordinary talent, D'Angelo weaves that everlasting thread from his forebears to us, now. We all ought to be thankful for this powerful music. He picks up the howling wind of the American struggle, feels the beating of the ancient heart which all colours hear, and sings so that we all might feel free.
not even only americans mate.....it can be anyone whos having a modern common life on this planet...omg......i cant describe this huge wave of emotions listening to this...omg...lol
levo
No he doesn't
d'angelo ain't your average pop singer. he doesn't take requests. this was also a free show, so he doesn't owe anybody shit. the fact that he was playing this killer fucking set was already amazing. i was there at this show, and i had an amazing time and was blown away as usual. he did show up a whole hour late tho hahaha so that was the only part i wasn't too happy about
I was privileged to be at this set, and doubly privileged to get to experience it again
Wait wait wait.... Angelo Moore & D'Angelo sang a Fishbone song together? That validates so many things at once I can't even wrap my head around it. SO happy
burnin + lootin SOO GOOD
Bring It!!! The Funk that Is D'Angelo brings it all! Don't get no funkier than D PFunk that was then D' is now
Gawd damn! "Black Flowers" is so intense! Sounds like a personal anthem for all involved. AMAZING!
he may or may not have played his "hits" but this concert is outstanding!!! captain kirk is on fire!!
thankful and thoughtful is the shit...doing sly proud
I love how D'angelo went outside the box with his music...his audience expanded and he sounds great and looks great...that's a real musician...i wish I was there!!!:-(
Not trying to be racist but live bands are where its at. Thats why the Roots for example play at festivals (mostly hippie festivals) because the white folk are the ones buying tickets to shows for the most part, and since you don't make shit off of cd sales you may as well cater to the people that are willing to drive long distances of across the country in some cases, pay crazy ticket prices and are willing to camp for 3-5 days with no showers in the rain with 10-80k plus people to see these bands
He's outstanding
REAL TALENTED!!!!.
this band man.... like no other!
+Casper van Helvoirt
I don't know about that, but it all depends on what cha like...Cool Beans
erik dennard yeah it is, it always is :)
But I mean with 'like no other' that they're very original, and no other band does nor can do the same they do. the groove, the vibe, the filth ;)
Black Flowers Though!! With the Theremin THOUGH!! #done This is funKdamental, some of yall just won't get it. That's ok. Just stay in school, you'll learn eventually!!
i think imma cry
damn its way too fucking cool
Imma dry yo i
This is the single most funky performance of no head no backstage pass ever
Like omg
The fact the grown men yelling out request like they at a DJ booth is annoying
I want to find that guy and strangle him!! HAHA! Very annoying!
Brown Sugar!!! Lol!
King Vic exactly that guy should have got kicked out so disrespectful to D glad he took it professionally. Because of idiots in the crowd like that we haven't heard from D for so long because he doesn't want that stigma. Jose Ortiz pookiewood
I respect D'Angelo for not responding to that idiot. If I was there in the audience and heard that guy, I will yet out loud to him to shut the hell up & go throw food at his face. Lol! Talk about absolute disrespect!
I soooooooooo agree. Annoying dinna mug! and. rude.
This show would have been memorable for his version of Funkadelic's "No Head No Backstage Pass" alone, but all of it was off the chain. I can't believe there were people complaining because he didn't play "Brown Sugar". I'm sure D'Angelo is as tired of playing that song as Prince is tired of playing "Purple Rain".
Some people need to listen to more music than what they play on the radio and appreciate it when artists do something a little different for you live.
very good!!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
What a treat to hear Angelo Moore on stage with Questlove and D'angelo! That said...woof...rough. Obviously it was a rough show sound-wise, given the nature of the festival. Still loved that performance!
Yo! This is insane! Loving every minute of it.
this is feeding my soul in a way that is indescribable..that INTRO!! WHEEEEWWWWW!!!
Yaaassssss! i watch this video at least once a day
d'angelo!!!!! fucking brilliant!!!
thanks for the upload, what a pure pleasure, i enjoy every single minute 👌
One of the best performances I’ve seen from him. Still one of my favorites and will always be. He’s timeless.
Respects D’Angelo
he gave me so much life... I swear I love D'angelo... He is a musical genius
That groove for "No head no backstage pass" was infectious... I just love how quest dragged the beat and the bass was just locked in thats some real shit right there.
I prefer the pulse of the original better. The sync of the drum and bass and guitar too for that matter was distracting. Trying to make it funkier than the original. Of course Questlove doesn't have the toms to play the original exactly, but it's just distracting how the band just doesn't sound tight. Partially it might be trying to mix the Booty bass line across the two songs and it doesn't quite fit 'backstage pass' ideally. I dunno for sure. Too tired right now to figure out what is wrong with the arrangement exactly. At least they trying and they ARE good musicians so I'm not hating.
LOVE this set, Love the 7 in intro a lot.
Awesome performance!!!!!!!!!
Sydney, Australia
thank you!
Much Love!
Now THIS is my favourite upload of 2015 bar none.
Thank you. Long live Afro Punk!!!!
Get ready to experience pure genius...
I Love whatever he sing. His vocal talent is off the chain. Great Musician.
Love his keyboard rig setup...looks awesome!!!!
Great Performance
D’Angelo is truly one of the greatest of all time thankful for his music
I always come back to this video. If only they could put out a live Vanguard record!
Amazing!
Dude always ahead of his time. This music speaks to NOW
Cool to see D'Angelo with a B3 upfront and centre. I'd love to hear even more.
Great!!! I love it. Killer Band!!! Real Black Rock!! paying homage to black Rockers like Mothers Finest, P Funk!
Just In love 😍
Greatdayindamornin LIVE... YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I'm glad you guys made it happen for my brother.
This concert video was incredible!! Also, a theremin solo by Angelo Moore on 'Black Flowers'?!! So awesome!!
I looove D'Angelo songs, and I love when he sings the songs of others too.
Makes me rediscover he's a awsome SINGER!
Bloody hell... I enjoyed that. Roll on Manchester in a couple of weeks :)
this show always reminds me of the importance of "roots" (of whatever, could be spirit, culture, dream). this may not be d's very best ever, but this is so full of that about to be the best, explosion. true inspiration, man, true inspiration.
YES!!
Anybody else notice the guitar quoting "Africa Talks to You" during "Thankful and Thoughtful?"
i love that these guys jam some funkadelic
Sweet! He covered my favorite Bob Marley song, Burnin & Lootin!! It's great to have you & your music back D'Angelo! :)
Amazing! I wish he would do these covers in a studio album! There is NO one quite like D'Angelo! His voice and his music are important. Especially nowadays where we there is an absence of true musicians and art in what is called "music."
I remember listening to "Black Flowers" by Fishbone on repeat for damn near a week! It's always been one of my favorites. D'angelo is on fire as usual'
i was there! what this video doesn't show is the hour he kept us waiting after his scheduled time. but it was well worth it
Just got done watching 'Finding the Funk' so of course I had to come here. Wow. Great band and love that he pays homage to this predecessors.
Where can I find the documentary?
... I was there & it was Awesome !! ...
