  • An unholy union is upon us as Johnny Christ is joined by Papa Emeritus himself, Tobias Forge. The Ghost frontman is quick to rekindle his friendship with Johnny and reflect back on their time touring together. Tobias reveals his process of going from the road right into the studio, and how a change of musicians allows that transition to happen so quickly.
Tobias reflects back on his childhood and how he got into metal. We learn about Sweden’s OK magazine, and how it helped to shape Tobias’ views on the world. We fast forward to Ghost’s most recent tour, and the gratitude Tobias has for the crew that allows him to perform each night.
We also learn on this episode:
    • Some of Tobias’ favorite comedians
    • Why you should listen to The Shaggs
    • The importance of doing something you love
    • How Ghost has carved their niche in the metal world

Figured Tobias to be a difficult guy with his controlling nature about the music and image of Ghost. The reality is the music is super catchy and the shows are epic. I can see from this interview that this guy is a true professional and intelligent and really cares about the fans. He's genuinely hurt by what covid has done and how it affects live music. He's a good guy and let's face it....he can write music. He's got IT.

True. Maybe he's particular, or a bit of a control-freak about some things, but considering how successful Ghost has been up to this point in time I think that is his right since it obviously works. I'm glad to hear that he's doing all he can to cultivate a good working environment for everyone on the tour too since not only is it the decent thing to do, but I bet it also results in better shows as well so really it's a win-win sort of situation.

There is nothing wrong with having a singular and monopolistic vision for your music. Compromising with others can dilute your vision and I completely understand that. Ghost, Nine inch nails, Megadeth, Filter, Foo Fighters - all wouldn’t be the bands they are without that singular vision of the frontman and songwriter.

Did he ever introduce himself? I ask, because I have a running bet with a buddy of mine on how his name is pronounced. He says it's like the interviewer in this video pronounces it: *toe-BYE-as forj*, whereas I say that's the "Americanized" version that Tobias politely accepts. I have heard his name spoken in Swedish - his native country - as *toe-BEE-as FOR-gay*, and think that's the correct pronunciation. So I'm wondering if he introduced himself as toe-BYE-as or toe-BEE-as?

man, the more I watch tobias interviews the more I learn with him. not only about his ideas and life, but communication as well. it’s gold to be able to speak so calmly and mannerly in a world where everyone is in a rush to say anything, anywhere. I’ve learned already after so many interviews how he behaves in a conversation. he’ll always listen attentively to you like what you’re saying matters and that conversation is important to him. and just like that he won’t interrupt you either. he’ll never answer right away. he’ll always make a pause to think about his next words. that’s why you’ll never see him vomiting meaningless words and saying whatever. he’s undoubtedly an inspiration to me. truly a type of person you have to dig to find.

Every time I hear Tobias speak, I find 2 thoughts running through my head - 1. He's a certified genius and 2. He's a truly gracious and professional guy despite the craziness surrounding the whole thing. Ghost is that one in a million where everyone wanted someone who loved all of this as much as we do and the supreme nerd turns out to be a damn prodigy and puts out more than just music to interact and amuse everyone, including himself! I love hearing him talk about the business end as much as I love watching him nerd out over 80's metal and punk. Granted, Ghost is and has been my favorite band for a decent number of years now, so I'm a bit biased, but bar none the best show I've ever been to. The interaction the band has with it's fans, the lore and the videos and all of the clergy stuff is so damn much fun! It's crazy and over the top and very nudge-nudge, wink-wink. He's one of the few hugely successful music acts that literally still cares about giving the fans a good show and connecting with them. Love Tobias so much! Also, keep the current touring lineup. They have the same love for the fans and it show and their social media is another extension of the band, despite them all being ghoouuuuls.
Johnny, I've liked your music, but this was my introduction to you, the man. Love it!

Tobias is such an intellectually enriching and articulate guy and a consummate artist. I know he gets a bit of criticism for being so monopolistic and dictatorial in his vision for Ghost, but I understand why. He has such a specific and singular creative ambition for the band that it would probably be a form of artistic dilution to allow any form of compromise by having other creative inputs in the band. It is very similar with Trent Reznor in Nine inch nails and Dave Mustaine in Megadeth.
I have to say I am very sad that I do not remember the last couple of songs in both Ghost gigs that I attended last due to too many beers. I have seen Ghost multiple times now and they are a fantastic live proposition. Would recommend seeing them whenever you can, amazing experience.

Tobias seems like he'd be a very interesting person to just have a conversation with....not necessarily about music/ghost but just in general....Im actually very surprised to learn that he's 41 as I'll turn 41 in a few months...I also gotta say I have a very strong memory about my childhood as well and I just watched a great video last night about people with attention deficit disorder, which I struggle with daily....as I think many creative people do and anyhow the Dr was saying that the adhd brain is wired differently and that very often the long term memory is superior to atypical wired brains yet they, WE, can't recall dinner last night. I would have to believe these gentlemen have had similar issues or traits at the least. Great interview Johnny and Tobias. Would love to see an a7x/ghost tour.

The story of The Shaggs is even crazier than you yet know.
Their paternal grandmother was a palm reader and psychic, and she predicted that her granddaughters would form a band and became world famous rock stars. So their dad, her son, set out to make it happen. He pulled his daughters out of school and made them take music lessons, and then booked a recording studio when he decided they were good enough to record their debut album. Then he found a fly by night record label that would press 1000 copies of it, though he had to pay them to do it.
Well the label went out of business and the owner disappeared with the money and 900 Shaggs albums. And that was the last anyone heard of them until Frank Zappa got his hands on one of the few surviving copies of Philosophy of the World. He loved what he heard in a weird, outsider way, and the Shaggs took off from there.

You can't overestimate how important Okej magazine was to the kids growing up in Sweden in 80s.
I heard somewhere that it had a reach of 100%. Meaning every kid read it. Every single one of us. Mind-blowing stuff.
And maybe, just maybe, that magazine is part of the reason why Sweden went on to be so successful in the music industry.

I LOVE listening to Tobias. I'm not sure why the interviewer kept cutting him off. =( You get to really enjoy and hear his genius when you let him speak uninterrupted.
I really wish he didn't cut him off to talk about his American friend when he just started talking about when he learned English. It's something a lot of us want to know about and you could tell Tobias was going to talk about it in detail.

Just saw Ghost tonight in San Diego... wow the show is getting better and better. Saw them in Anaheim earlier this year, but the sound mix there was way off for some reason. Anaheim venue was much larger and my seats sucked as well, but Pechanga Arena was small enough to put the crowd a reasonable distance from the stage. The pyrotechnics were awesome and a serious step up - 2 rounds of confetti cannons, flame pillars, explosions, and spark showers. Cool that there's such a good mix of new and old songs, too.

I can understand Tobias talking about the bands who aren't touring because of COVID. I have heard others not put their kids' in in-person school due to germophobia. It is an excuse. I agree that the fans suffer and miss out just like their kids are missing out on having social interaction with kids their age. I'm in an older generation than most commenters here (I was raised during the Beatlemania-[the 60s & 70s]).
I enjoyed the interview and am learning a lot about the metal world listening to Tobias'interviews. I admire him and am inspired by his vision, songwriting, and intellect.

As a Brit I feel like a lot of non-native English speakers end up speaking with an American-ish accent.
So he has that but clearly sounds European.
His English is incredible! Britain is awful for learning other languages so I’m always so impressed when other Europeans speak such great English.

Listening to Tobias talk about how Ghost operates, it's just completely non traditional in the "band" business, which is really cool. Its more of like, a touring musical with 4-5 different teams involved in the production of Ghost from writing to recording to live performance. Super cool. It's the Phantom of the Opera, eh?
