Kudos to the unnamed benefactor who has underwritten the cost of the give-away tour slots! One friendly point of info, perhaps it would be beneficial to publish whether give-away winners receive a single ticket or pair of tickets, just so everyone is clear. Reason is, the Museum recently did their own give-away and it was for a pair of tickets.

Tour with Drach rambling about stuff for hours on end. Name your price. Man what I wouldn't give to be let loose with a radio and flashlight on that ship.
Drach and curator can you make this happen, a Google Street View like tour of every accessible place on the ship. And 360 camera shots of any special places only accessible in dry dock. Could be amazing.
    Navy Contract:
You may NOT re-activate the engines and give site seeing cruises up and down the coast.
You may not reactivate the main guns and let people see if they can score the longest hole in 1 shot.

I served on CG-51, USS Thomas S. Gates, a Ticonderoga class Guided Missile Cruiser. I was on board for 2 drydock periods. It is a completely different view when you can walk under your ship. Drydocked, both times, at Norfolk Naval Shipyard Portsmouth.

The tyranny of distance, New Jersey is not exactly a stone's throw from Australia, strikes yet again, where had I been closer, I would have avidly gone on several of these drydock tours, as the IOWA's are just the epitome of classic WWII styles, lines and design, even after the numerous modernisations....they still have that beautiful heavyset canvas....just gorgeous ships that we will never see the likes of again.
    Cheers from Sydney Aus!!!!!

If you are visiting Philadelphia for this, you also can save yourself the expense of a rental car, you can get around pretty easily with ubers and the subway. Assuming your hotel is in Center City:
to get to the meetup you can take the PATCO (red) line to the City Hall stop in Camden, and it's about a 10 minute walk to the pub from there. If you aren't near a red line stop, you can take the blue line to 8th street and transfer to the red (though beware that they are two separate systems, and you'll need to buy another ticket)
to get to the Battleship via transit, there are 2 options. the easier and faster is to take the Broad Street line (orange line) south to NRG station, and it will be about a 20-30 minute walk to the drydock itself. If you don't want to walk that much, the 17 bus will pick you up on Market Street in Center City, and will drop you off right at the navy yard, though its a bus so will be slower
If anyone has any questions about how to get around on transit, I am happy to help

6:38 what is the ship to the right of the New Jersey? How big is it? It’s making a battleship look small!

That is the Charles L. Gilliland. It was towed out shortly after you posted your comment. As of May 16, 2024 it shows as being in Bayonne, NJ. While it was in Philadelphia the scuttlebutt was that it was waiting for a replacement propeller. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Charles_L._Gilliland

Why is it in the contract with the navy to not start the engines?
Is it so they take it on a cruise then some other nation can't capture it?

    • @jec6613
      @jec6613 Před 3 měsíci

Ryan goes over this on the Battleship New Jersey channel. Basically, to run any of the steam plan you have to remove the preservatives that are protecting them, so they start degrading immediately - and the ship must be able to be re-activated by the US Navy. Also they don't want people using a battleship as their personal yacht.
Note that USS Texas could have her steam plant re-activated, it's only the later fast BB's that have this restriction.

Probably because of reasons and maybe potential of reactivation again and they'd rather have the engines sat untouched and idle than trampled all over.

Basically everything on the ship can be repaired except the engines. If those deteriorate or break down due to inexperienced volunteers......you don't have a battleship anymore. Least not one that's real useful. Not to mention the costs would be unbelievably expensive for a non-profit to try to raise and keep up. Right now New jersey takes about 10,000 dollars a day to keep in her static museum condition. And a good chunk of that actually comes from the state of New Jersey. When in operation she cost about a million dollars a day to run...........while it's unlikely the ship will ever return to active service. It's even more unlikely a billionaire will decide to fund the cost of turning the ship into a sight seeing yacht. And if they did they'd probably buy out the contract outright and make it a private affair.

That explains it. Ryan got his attitude from the New Jersey Board. No wonder he thinks people should give their money to him since he knows better how to use it than they do. Yes, one of his comments in one of his video rubbed me wrong to the point I stopped watching his videos.
