@gizmo6485 he looked accurate, but accurate and cool are two different things. Higuruma was not that cool in the manga anyway. But “I don’t use cannons to hunt rabbit.” And “get lost.” Are two of the coolest bits in the series.

This edit is amazing. I was so moved by Shanks and Luffy's bond despite having never watched the anime. I'm completely enchanted by the live-action Shanks who I think is portrayed as an incredibly kind, strong, gentle and respectable pirate captain, all in all the perfect example of non-toxic masculinity - how can a kid not love someone like him? Peter Gadiot really did a perfect job, I was so convinced and charmed by his Shanks. I really hope Shanks will get more screen time and development in the live action than in the manga/anime (hoping Oda will contribute to this since he's the executive producer & loves Shanks as a character - I'm convinced he has big things planned for him)
I think Shanks and Luffy is the greatest anime duo ever... and the placing of the hat is the single most iconic moment in anime history.
Technically they are not a duo since they only been with each other a year. Luffy usually duo with Zoro.

As far as I have seen everyone likes the Shanks actor and I also think he did a great job.

I only saw people mocking him when just one frame of him was revealed, after we saw him in action everything changed, he acted very well, he seems like a commendable figure to follow and he has a huge charm.
I feel like people are always going to have problems because characters can be perceived differently by different people, I think we can all admit they did a great job though.

Netflix has produced some total garbage but they nailed One Piece. The characters are perfect, they stuck to the story even more. My one critique is that they didn’t really portray Shanks as the total badass he is in the anime series. Yet

*The Billion Berry question...* Did Shanks let his guard down because he was so worried about Luffy, or did he willingly give up his arm to the Sea King? In the manga he said it was a "bet on the new generation". Does he mean that literally, or is it just copium after losing a limb? Could also be both..
Assuming he knows about (spoiler) the Gomu Gomu being the Nika fruit, and that Luffy ate it, maybe he decided to bet on Luffy to awaken the fruit.
He probably let it happen, he was really strong back then , my guess is that he knew about nika fruit , since luffy eat it , he bet on the boy ..Spolier
This is way évident on after wano arc when shanks is seeing the news about luffy nika , he has a whole personal flashback since stealing the gomu gomu , until losing his arm , it like he is confirming the bet was right.
Given the overall tone of the live action series, I'd say it's more that he willingly gave it up to the Sea King.
A reoccurring theme in the first season is of the older generation making a sacrifice for the younger one. Nami's mother sacrificing her life for her daughters, Zeff giving his leg so Sanji had a chance at survival, and Shanks giving his arm for Luffy. It highlights the theme of the previous generation doing all they can to make sure that the next generation can fulfill their dreams.

It was probably done for thematic purposes. Shanks is based on Tyr from norse mythology which is why his boat looks like a viking boat and Tyr is meant to also be a red head.
In Norse mythlogy Tyr gives up his arm to save the world from Fenrir and in One Piece Shanks gives up his arm to save the world by betting it on Luffy.
Another interesting thing about this is that when Ragnarok happens Tyr is destined to fight Garmr which is a hell hound sometimes depicted as a 3 headed dog. If you look at Blackbeards Jolly Roger it has 3 heads and the manga keeps building a kind of rivalry between them.

No SHANKS IS FRAUD!! MIHAWK IS FRAUD!! ARLONG SLAMS BOTH. Mihawk's Bankai is stronger than Shank's haki. Arlong's blue haki is much stronger than Shank's haki, Mihawk's Bankai and Buggy's Nuclear Buggy Bomb combined.

Garp was more of an absent parent. He would visit him 2-3 times a year. Luffy, at this point, lived all by himself.

Whatever Shanks a pirate or not, he was a good role model to Luffy. While Luffy does respect and love his grandfather, Garp isn’t Luffy’s hero, Garp hits Luffy way too many times and drop Luffy off with an bandit, only visits ever once and while.
Garp put Luffy in a mountain bandit base to hide his grandson from the world government, because Luffy's father, Dragon, was the number one most wanted person. You said Garp is not a hero for Luffy, but he is the one who makes Luffy mentally strong, not afraid of anything, because he knows Luffy ate devil fruit. if Garp didn't put Luffy in the mountain bandit base, Luffy wouldn't have met Ace and Sabo, Ace trained Luffy's combat skills, while Shanks was a motivator

How does Netflix want to create a reality series inspired by a cartoon series, and the simplest things they could not master, for example, Royal Haki? I am telling you that this series will inevitably fail the real One Piece series, as the One Piece cartoon series contains movement and imaginative matters that the story writer was able to coordinate with the story and put artistic touches that made this series very famous. As for Netflix, it was not even able to provide Royal Haki for Shanks, and this was a miserable failure from the beginning. Netflix should reconsider this series and stop imitating it, as it will never be able to. I did not like the series from the beginning, since I saw who would portray Luffy.
