The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (TV 1980)

- A TV adaptation of Washington Irving's classic ghost story. Humor is the drawing card in this version, with Jeff Goldblum a nerdish Ichabod Crane, Dick Butkus an appropriately nasty Brom Bones, and Meg Foster as spirited Katrina van Tassel.
A young Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane is a truly brilliant casting choice!
it's likie if it was his destiny to play crane , like irving predicted
What a FIT. I had no idea this existed.
I 👍🏼 agree totally. Plays the part very well.
I'm 1 minute in and I thought that was him!!! 😊
and Dick Butkus as Brom Bones! Perfect!
I'm 46 and have only recently found this movie, but I've been watching it every October now since 2017. I love the old school feel of this movie and all the actors and actresses who made a wonderful feel good family movie.
I remember coming home early from trick or treating to watch this. There used to be a CZcams version of this with the original commercials. I sure do miss that version, and I think you would get a kick out of it. Fritz was the principal in Welcome Back Kotter. Brom Bones was a very famous Hall of Fame linebacker. Also, the movie was filmed in Utah.
Same here. One of my favorite versions!
I am 49 and remember watching this on regular channels. Loved it. Just found it again some 40 years later. I just remember Jeff Goldblum was in it.
If you look...someone posted the one aired with commercials about 1 month ago. Philly broadcast in the title
I am 52 & I start watching this every Fall season, I love the nostalgia. Once I reached my mid/late 40’s I started gravitating back towards everything I watched during my childhood in the 70’s & early 80’s. Love it all, even things I didn’t necessarily love back then. Take Me Back To Eden! ❤
I was just a 12 year old girl when this movie first aired in October of 1980. Jeff Goldblum is the best Ichabod Crane I've ever seen. I'm a 54 year old woman now, and this is still my favorite version of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. It's a shame this movie isn't being shown on TV anymore. It's a good, family-friendly movie.
I saw it also but not until 1982 & I was 7 years old at the time , & they showed it in the summer for some reason
I completely agree! It’s my favorite too! ❤
Agree !! Great Family-friendly version, and the best version imho.
@@snowysquirrel9790 I like it much better than "Sleepy Hollow," the Johnny Depp version. They made way to many changes with that one. It didn't even come close to the original story. Besides that, it was nightmare-inducing! The Jeff Goldblum version is a bit different from the original, but not like "Sleepy Hollow."
I had just turned 11 in September 1980... living in Louisville, Kentucky... I'm fairly certain I watched it when it first aired... October is a crisp aired golden leaf 🍁 month in that area... sure I was snuggled up on my parents bed 🛏️ watching it on the 📺
Wow. I was ten years old and our family just moved into the country down a 3 mile long dirt road with an old cemetery in a hollow just a half a mile away about the time this movie first aired on television. The cemetery is called Rigdon cemetery located in umatilla Florida. It dates back to the 1800's and it gave me the willy's walking past it to and from the school bus stop. But after a while I started visiting that old graveyard and started picking it up and taking care of it. It was a forgotten cemetery, which as a kid I found to be terribly sad and everyday I would visit each and every gravestone and pay my respects. I'm 48 years old now and I still visit that old graveyard , everytime I walk into that resting place a calmness happens that is indescribable. Everytime I see this movie, it brings back memories of my childhood and I take a long ride into the country and visit that old place.
Thank you for sharing your story
Yikes...🎃👻🍁😲💀
I bet the sprites there know you and are happy that you still visit their resting place. 🤘👻💖
So did we until my dad was laid off and he lost his job no work. The road was named sleepy hollow. 😅
Isn't it funny how one thing that we see or experince reminds us of something else that takes us back to that time?
I saw this version on Halloween night after I got home from trick-or-treating. Still my favorite version!
I did that, too!! Watching this while sick over Halloween (but still trick-or-treating) was very relaxing.
Goo 😳🍿wintrope palmer youre not dead ? And not alive 🙏 ❤️ am both and neither 🖕🙏💯 Poetry At it's FINEST
I love this version. You can tell that the actors had fun with the roles.
“A man don’t know what fed up means, until he’s been proper married”. This movie has a comic element which I truly enjoy.
🥰
Everyone in Sleepy Hollow sure had it in for bachelors!
That old guy was one of the best things about this version 😂
It's not Halloween without Sleepy Hollow, Thank You.
Goldblum is the perfect actor to play Ichabod Crane, he just looks and sounds exactly how the character should. I have this movie on VHS and have rewatched it a few times, it's always entertaining.
Jeff Goldblum and Meg Foster, what a great combination! This was very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
This movie is so wholesomely innocent yet keeps audience's attention. I have lost count how often I have watched this and I look forward to many more years of watching it here😍. 4-24-22
Awesome 😎👍 movies with no hidden cost
21:05 Especially with that crazy 🤪 histerica laughing at the part in the snow
Ikr?! This thing scared the hell outta me as a kid. Why? Palmers damn laugh! It STILL scares me! 😂 As For Jeff Goldblum, he is the HOTTEST Ichabod Crane EVER! I think he is so damned adorable! Way better than Johnny Depp any day of the week! 🥰
This is my favorite version! This is the only version where Ichabod gets a happy ending.
I was 6 years old and in love with the Halloween season in 1980 when this was on tv. Wish I could go back just one more time. We didnt know how good we had it.
Well, the Burton version gives him a happy ending too, even if it wanders far afield from the original story...
@@jenniferschillig3768 Yes thats true! I like it, but I dont really count Burtons movie as traditional LOSH. Its like its own thing.
Jeff Goldblum makes such a great Ichabod Crane, a good mix of awkwardness and magnetism. The kind of guy Brom Bones could be equally worried and not worried about.
@Opy Brook Actually, smartypants, it's not Goldbloom either, its Goldblum! And the typo is now fixed! Cheers!
@@jillczarnyszewicz7494 I like you. Hey
I saw this movie as a child in the 80s. It’s always stuck with me that jeff Goldblum played in an adaptation of sleepy hollow.
I haven't seen this movie since I was 10-years-old and had just finished trick-or-treating. I'm amazed at how much I remembered of the movie. What nostalgia!
I was 6 years old and just barely remembered it. Thank goodness for CZcams.
Same. Such strong memories of this!❤❤
I hadn't seen it in years...remember every bit of it
September 2020 and was recommended this adaptation I wasn't aware this gem even existed ..love the Sleepy Hallow stories
Jeff Goldblum is the perfect Ichabod Crane
So much!!! AND hes still so good looking here!!!
Jeff Goldblum is perfect, period!!
Beautiful eyes too

Before the Internet
@@jackspratt5781 but now you have the internet to watch this. It's not a horrible thing to have
@Nicole Autumn Steffen, I agree with you plus the legend of the sleepy hollow is 1 of my favorite stories like on Halloween or whatever I'm in the in the mood for this story
Goldblum really does bring something special to the character of Ichabod Crane. He makes him a truly sympathetic character very easy to like & care about.
Jeff Goldblum best Ichabod Crane ever!👍🏻
My favorite favorite version of this ghostly tale & Jeff G is the perfect Ichabod Crane- all the actors are sublime💖
Love this version! So much better than any other. I agree; Jeff Goldbum was MUCH more like Ichabod Crane than Johnny Depp. There is something simple & eerie about this -- scared me half to death as a kid....but I grew up with this. It's funny; what you know as a child...it never leaves you!
I still prefer the one with Johnny Depp.
@@nedludd7622 That one absolutely deviated from, and was an insult to, Washington Irving (the author).
Such a classic ! remembering watching this! Thanks for posting this. 😊
@@johnsahaj8862 I just watched the Halmark version.
There is another one which is very good. I can't remember who is in it but Mr. Crane is even skinnier than Goldblum.😂
I love this version of Sleepy Hollow (The legend of). It has a charm, and humor, that I never tire of.
I used to have a crush on the girl who played Katrina. I saw her in an episode of Miami Vice, too.
My claim to fame is my grandpa and dad being the fiddle players at the hour and ten mark lol
Cute version. Jeff was casted perfectly, all 6'6" of that goofy looking actor. Loved it... And if you're old enough to remember legendary NFL Dick Butkus (Bram Bones) playing football... a beast of a man on the field and fun on film!
Thank you for sharing @ FroggyFlix!
Hidden classic. One of the greats.
A classic. I watch it every year. RIP Dick Butkus.
Always like Jeff Goldblum. He has one of those rare types of acting style, where it looks and sounds like he is just talking off the top of his head. Like he didn't even rehearse the lines.
what about Tom Petty?
@@kylekullin2520 does Tom petty act?
@@oldyeller6518 Yeah, he was an actor.
@@oldyeller6518 Sort of...He did several voice roles in cartoons like the Simpsons...frequently playing himself or had small cameos in a few things. His 'big' role was the mayor of Bridgetown in "The Postman"...where he essentially (again) played himself, this time in the future.
And WHAT A DELIGHTFUL SMILE HE HAS 😁.
Jeff Goldblum was so handsome😍😍😍😍.
Still an attractive man now that he’s older.
He was always not only attracted but very charming. Even us guys can appreciate that
When you weren't expecting Jeff Goldblum, but then Jeff Goldblum happens. It's like hell yeah, bonus Goldblum! Nature, uh, found a way.
Jeff goldblum is the best ichabod crane. No one could play him better than him.
Wow! What a bonus with Jeff Goldblum! I love every film he's made!
This is actually my favorite version of Sleepy Hollow. It has a little house on the prairie era vibe.
Nice 👍✨ Mr McAllister
Its a eerie movie 🎥🍿
Jeff Goldblum is fantastic in everything he does! thanks for the movie! and Dick Butkus-too funny!!!
Dick Butkus was the GOAT, RIP SIR🏈
This is my all time favorite Sleepy Hollow movie! Not Halloween with out it! Sad to hear of the passing of Dick Butkus-he was excellent in this movie!
I always thought Jeff Goldblum was the perfect Ichabod Crane. 💙
In junior high school I fell asleep watching this movie the night after Halloween and always wanted to know how it ended - yes, I read the book - and now, I finally know.☺️ Very good movie with a fun ending; thanks for sharing it!
Loved this movie as a young kid in the early 80s. Came on TV around Halloween! Thanks for posting!!
The last (and first) time I've seen this, was back when, it came out. I bought a VHS of it, back in the '90's, when a local video store was going, out of business. But, I never watched it, and lost it later on. This is an early Jeff Goldbloom vehicle, if not his first, perhaps. I see Mr. Woodman (from 'Welcome Back Cotter') is in it, along with that creepy eyed, Meg Foster😲!!! Those creeper peepers, always sent chills 🌬️ up, and down my spine🥴!!! I never did (and wouldn't), go out with a woman, who possesses blue eyes, like this. This movie is my favorite version, of this tale😁, next to the Disney animated short.
Well I see Tim Burton wasn't the only one who took some creative liberties with this Story. Poor Irving, two rough years.
It's always been family tradition since I was about 9 years old to watch this movie every Halloween season. It's one of my most favorite classic literature stories that just fits right in with Halloween and it's origins extremely well. Bloomberg imo looked the most handsome, cute and attractive in this movie more then others he I'm sure has had the pleasure of acting in. The best hands down. ❤️👍
I’m 63 1st time I’ve seen this movie. I’d seen dozen other versions. Including the animated ones. Jeff Goldblum is the perfect impersonation of Ichabod Crane. The most perfect character resembling Ichabod Crane. Loved it.
I must have missed this growing up. Surprised I loved the Disney cartoon as a kid. Relatives lived near Sleepy Hollow. Even wound up going to school in Tarrytown. 🎃👻
Fr??🥶🥶
I went to my buddies wedding in Sleepy Hollow. Its such a beautiful area. I want to go back for Halloween one year.

Yea it was written by the Most mysterious stranger 🙏
Show of hands, in the scene where Goldblum is being chased by the Headless horseman, how many of you were Hoping He'd say "Must go faster, Must Go Faster..."
Personally, I'm glad he didn't actually say that line here. It would have ruined the effect when he said it in another movie about 13 years later. The reason, then, would be that when he said it in Jurassic Park, everyone would be like: "Wait. Didn't he say that in The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow?" Jurassic Park is far more iconic in Jeff Goldblum's career than this film is.
Don't get me wrong. I like this version of the classic tale. But, the "must go faster" line would have ruined it for him in his more iconic role if he had said it here first. Plus, he does use that line in another film about 3 years after JP.
This and Sleepy Hollow (1999) are the best adaptations of the tale. Though this one focuses much more on the residents of Sleepy Hollow, their relations with Crane, and the subplot involving Palmer. The Headless Horseman isn't much of a threat until the end. Goldblum is in his element, and this was his earliest starring role. Too bad this movie never made it past VHS, it must not be married!
I know someone who has it on DVD.
@@spencerfrankclayton4348 Get a good look at it; might be a bootleg.
Had to watch this in my 11th grade English class back in 89. I've loved it ever since.

It may sound silly but this particular version of Sleepy Hallow is just the best and I thoroughly enjoy watching it over and over. I thank whomever posted this.😊
Have often wondered why the script writers have Crane say Palmer has a "white" beard when it's clearly dark grey????🤔
