  • PLEASE NOTE: This is not a tech channel, but simply a show-and-tell. It is not designed to give advice and support on vacuum tube amplifiers but to show what I get up to each week in the workshop.
    I deliberately keep tech talk to a minimum, or at least to a point where it’s understandable to the casual viewer. There are other channels more suited to that level of detail.
    I do not do reviews, either paid or unpaid. My opinions are entirely my own and do not represent those of others.
    All comments are welcome but those deemed unhelpful, rude, inappropriate, or unsavoury will be reviewed and possibly censored.

    Hey mate, a bunch of people in my live chat last Saturday said you were doing good work. So I checked you out.
    Glad to say they were correct. Subbed.
    And you were absolutely in the right. I believe on your side of the pond you give a two finger salute…
    He earned it.

    Re the phone call.
    You were in the right - it’s your time and expertise. So you decide when it costs and when it it’s a gift.
    Had similar with people with guitar lessons. At a bluegrass session a guy who was a pretty basic guitarist started to be really friendly. Which quickly changed to him saying. I was thinking we could get together and jam… I reckon I could pick up all sorts of stuff from you. Fortunately I had my sensible head on and politely said ‘actually that sounds like a guitar lesson, and I charge £35 for that. Happily fit you in’. Conversely I offered to do some free ‘how to put songs together’ sessions for the beginners in the group cos they were a nice group!

    The phrase "cheeky $0d" springs to mind....You're running a business so you're absolutely in the right to charge for your time!

  • @stephencarey6114
    @stephencarey6114 Před 28 dny +3

    You were definitely in the right. You are a professional and as such should be payed for your advice whether it's over the phone or not. Especially if the person seeking it is cheeky enough to know what he's said about you and your business has not been particularly nice.

    I've watched you from sideline for a long time. Spoke on forums etc etc. Probably argued about technical side of things over years. However
    You were 100% in the right.
    You always came across as a sound person.
    All the best

    I think that if anythig you were rather generous to offer advice at a cost - rather than just a flat refusal, full credit to you for that.

  • @jasonsansome5579
    @jasonsansome5579 Před 27 dny +2

    I think if another tech calls for advice on something they are stuck on, thats fine.. and you know you can always call them if you get caught with a real pig of a repair or whatever. We all get the odd thing on the bench that we go 'what the?!!" so I wouldn't have a problem helping out someone in the trade who is stuck.
    But.. an individual who will just bleed you of knowledge and never help you, nevermind that he has been running you down behind your back.. get stuffed!
    You also never know what the persons abilities are, you could be talking them through something, they assure you that they have drained the filter caps on what they are working on... You can see how it could go wrong!!
    I think you are absolutely right, tell him where to go.

    I think your answer to the not-a-troll query shows a considerable amount of restraint and professional civility.
    Your discussions around the cost of producing your amplifiers are also very illuminating.

    I think as a relatively small and niche community, its great to offer advice and support as everybody benefits from the generosity that abounds, however it has to be a two way street and with that you are 100% justified in charging someone who has fallen short of that spirit. In fact it would be at least time and a half 😂

    Your expertise (hard won over many years) and your time have immense value. It's up to you to protect that value (because others generally won't). There are times when charging for over the phone advice is 100% appropriate. That said, I would have quite happily refused that guy flat out if he bad mouthed me or others in the past because bad behavior should have consequences. 👍

    Interesting video. I have built a couple of Fender style amplifiers in the past and I honestly wouldn’t argue with your pricing, the cost of transformers, valves and good quality capacitors etc is quite high and getting higher, added to that you buy in chassis blanks and cabinets and your suppliers will have to make a profit. I often use the signal tracing method to detect faults on guitar amplifiers, once the signal disappears I’ll probably then resort to a multimeter. Incidentally I thought that your estimated price for a Trainwreck type amplifier was very reasonable, you’ll never get to own a private hideaway in the Pacific at those prices.

    I had mixed feelings about the guy who called asking for free advice
    What floated to the top was this guy seems to treat a lot of people poorly and that it doesn’t benefit anyone to ignore that and enable his unacceptable behavior. You weren’t rude to him, you made your boundaries known and it’s up to him to get a clue. I think you made the wise decision

    I've come to believe that nobody owes anybody anything in this world (although I reserve the right to behave altruistically as I see fit) other than a modicum of civility. Barring that, f&%k 'em and feed 'em fish heads.
    If it's any consolation, I live in Arkansas, and we're still getting spring rains here. I haven't once thought of fussing about it, because I know what will surely follow (unbearable heat), so I'll enjoy this while I can. hope you have a pleasant summer.

    Hi Chris. Absolutely you were correct but I also think that he was completely wrong to have the audacity to expect any help let alone free from yourself after showing such disrespect in the past. I also think that it is better for you that he declined to pay as if you did give advice you would have no way of knowing whether he acted correctly with it! I guarantee that if it didn't work or went wrong he would slag you off even more. Narrow escape I would say.

    You're not only within your rights to ask for a fee for your PROFESSIONAL assistance but, given the history, right to do so.
    If I were in the other chap's position and asking for your assistance with a project build I'd offer to pay for your consultation. It's the right thing to do.
