- The distinction between landscape photography and travel photography aren't so different. Here in The Azores, I walk you through the differences.

The Azores are an incredible place for photography. Whether you're a landscape photographer or into travel photo-making, this is such a great place to make images. We're on the island of Sao Miguel where there are so many incredible landscapes. At first, I really struggled to find good travel-specific photos. But eventually, I found so many great pictures. I already can't wait to get back here.

I love the wave action photos. The power of them crashing on the cliffs is amazing to see.
Glad you like them!
I'm not a travel photographer. But. I visited Rome for a week last fall and released a total of 8 videos. They didn't do particularly well, but I don't care. I captured a couple of decent images, and a lot of artwork. I may never go to Rome again, but I'll never forget it thanks to my photos and videos.
That's the reason I started doing this man. And believe me, I go back and watch my old travel channel that no one watched sometimes. It's great to have those memories etched.
You get bonus points with me for being a Thrice fan. Great video, as always, bud. You're a huge inspiration for me. Cheers
I never knew how cool the Azores were! I can understand how there are so many photogenic spots. I'm sure there are probably more you'll discover even on future trips there!
Oh man, I remember that lighthouse so well. Drove down with my rental car and almost didn't make it up agein 😀Azores are great, looking forward to second part!
Haha, I almost drove down and then thought better of it. haha
@@BrendanvanSon Yeah was not too much fun 😀
I lived in the Azores for two years, 1984-1986. I absolutely loved it there!
Woah! Must have been totally different back then too. Which island did you live on?
Looks like you've got the makings of a great location for a workshop. Look forward to seeing what you find on the other islands.
Nothing like a new location with new challenges. Great vid, thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed!
I first visited the Azores in 2016. After searching my Portuguese ancestry, I had a strong desire so see where they came from. A place I had never heard of at that time. I fell in love with the islands. I have made 5 trips there from my home in California. It’s a long haul getting there from here but so well worth it. The locals are so kind and friendly, the beauty of the island is incredible. You should visit São Miguel in June. The amount of hydrangea flowers with huge blossoms all over the island add even more to the beauty. It’s jaw-dropping and magical! I’m so glad you are exploring it.
Yeah! I'll bet it's beautiful in the spring!
I think I like travel photos more than landscape photos (generally) because there is usually context to the scene. This video kinda shows that. I do love my 100-400 but it can be easy to lose context of where you are/what makes that place beautiful. These all make me want to book a flight
I’m loving your videos 👍🏻 thanks
Glad to hear it!
This is one of your better videos...awesome!
Thanks so much, Steve.
Same here with not seeing anything on approach. Took a redeye flight about 8 years ago on my trip from Boston to Ponta Delgada. Had a massive tailwind and that 5+ hour flight arrived in 4, flat. It was 6AM, in November and it was dark and drizzly as we walked off the plane onto the tarmac. I'm thinking....what kinda crappy vacation is this gonna turn out to be? No, the Azores are stunning...
They are special. Glad you got to experience them!
Açores Islands are a fantastic place, not only S. Miguel, all the 9 islands are beautiful and somewhat unique. But don't even think that the weather is always like that! Consecutive sunny days are rare and when the probability of having better weather rises, mainly in july and august, so the number of tourists. I hope your future workshops in Açores will be very successful.
Great video ! Bringing back memories from my trip in 2018 . My parents were born in the town of Ginetes so many places that i did not get a chance to visit and photograph .
Amazing. Hopefully you get back again at some point.
Right on time for my trip (I bought the ticket week) and good to see different things compared to so many other Azores videos
Glad you enjoyed it!
10:06 I like the hazyness affect, feels more aery and fairy tale'ish
24:56 Holy shet bro! That is an amazing photo! That goes straight at my top 5 pics from you, I think
Great to see Simba back on the road. The Azores look beautiful 😍👍
They are awesome, man!
I traveled to the island of Horta. It was incredible. Old light houses, volcanos incredible colors and sea cliffs. Old fishing villages and also it’s known for its hydrangeas blooming. (Which they are known for) . I photographed some of my best landscape images there. And really few tourists and few other photographers as well! I highly recommend!
Horta is a city on the island of Faial.
Thank you for the correction. 👍
Thanks for sharing and congrats on 1000! I’m close. Lol
Great Job Brendan, great images and great video 👏
Thanks buddy, hope you're well!
@@BrendanvanSon All good Brendan thank you.
So now I think I have to get back to Sao Miguel at some point. I was there three times on holiday with my family around 20 years ago. We had small kids and at the time I wasn't as much into photography as I am now. And I never discovered that lighthouse 🙂
That lighthouse is awesome! You'll have to go back now haha
nice video, when you come to New Zealand , check out the pancake rocks on the West Coast . Stormy days are better as the waves are thumping under the rocks. You will enjoy that.
Thanks for the tip!
If you go in the summer months there will be a lot more tourists and the viewpoints will be full. But still a great experience.
Yeah, I imagine the summer is busier for sure.
Looks like an amazing location.
It is dude, it is!
There are ATV tours that you can take that will bring you up around the rim of the caldera at Sete Cidades...
It must be so difficult as a travel photographer, because no matter how stunning a scene is (beach, lake, river ect) if it doesn't have any distinguishing features to that place, then it could be anywhere.
Great video I should add 😊
Yeah, it's tricky. But you can also "sell" the idea of travel in general. By adding a person to the frame or something like that. But yeah, it's not as simple as it seems.
Loved this Brebdan, heard of the Azores but never seen anything online video or images so this was great to see it through your eyes and lens. Definitely looks to have major potential and will be interested to see hear how it compares to Madeira
It's an awesome place for photography. Was much more different to Madeira than I expected, though!
Great video from a gerat location.
Thanks Michael!
Also, find the lonely roads that take you across Sao Miguel from Ribeira Grande to Furnas. Warning signs of escaping volcanic gases along the road. And I did it at night.
I'd love to join you in November for your NZ scouting trip but not sure if I can afford it. No problem meeting you in Chch, I live there. 😁 I'll continue to consider it. I like exploring.
Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter. If the space goes unsold, I'll put it on a massive discount for a local.

There's definitely a lot of potential for photos. The Azores, much like Madeira, are just not on everyone's radar. Maybe the tourist board needs your help. 💪 It seems like there are steep corkscrew type roads like that on every island. Sometimes going down can be more dangerous than climbing, especially when wet. These days I'd need an elevator or funicular to negotiate them. Yeah, the second drone sequence was an improvement over the first. 😜. You'll get the hang of it, or just bring Greg along for flying duty. 🚁 Carry on. 👍🥂
The tourism board in The Azores is pretty active. They have funding and pre-pandemic they were working really hard to grow the industry there. I think it will happen.
Bro! You checking out this Canon 10-20 RF F4 L lens?!?!?
Sorry, you forgot to mention the name of the place you visit in this episode. 😅
hello! love you're videos. Im a beginning photographer and I'm wondering your opinion on which camera I should get. Currently it's between the Canon r50 and the Nikon d750. I like the canon because of it's modern technology, beginner friendly interface, and it's sharp canon colors, but I like the Nikon because it has a larger ecosystem of lenses, it's full frame, and it would challenge me to take more time with my photos. I would also like a versatile camera that is good at videos, but I also don't need super high resolution 4k whatever specs. I'm also into landscape photography, animal photography, street photography, but not quite so much portrait photography. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm also open to other suggestions in that price range!
Go with the Canon since it's mirrorless. The DSLRs will be pretty obsolete soon
Also worth looking at something like a Canon RP to start. It gives you access to the full frame lenses, photo quality is still excellent
@@BrendanvanSonok, thank you for responding!
Looks beautiful. How long is the flight from Lisbon to Azores?
It's about 3 hours.
Where had simba been ! ?
A mechanic who was supposed to change the oil managed to blow the gasket head. Then, there was a bit of a battle on who should have to pay for it... haha
Brendan van Song hahah. #roadtripkaraoke
James Cordon, look out.
BVS is a Thrice fan? 👌🏻
Massive fan of Dustin Kensrue (grew up going to Thrice concerts)
@@BrendanvanSon I listened to thrice back in my teenage days, you had like about 2 seconds of the track in the vid and I’m straight into work with Thrice on this AM, first time in forever!
You say you did a bunch of research but with 5 min on Instagram or CZcams and you see all of these locations and many more for just that island alone . I'm thinking you didn't research at all
haha, I didn't research on Instagram. I don't usually find it all the reliable and hate that I have to sift through 1000 selfies to find something that may or may not be there.
"Walking down the hill as fast as I can without dying ". But did you die??
hahahah. Only real ones know the reference.
@@BrendanvanSon 🤣
Hey Brendan, on your next Azores videos, please try not to refer to the locations in Spanish. Punta del Diablo? WTH, man!
😂The funny thing is that in my brain I'm saying it in perfect Portuguese. Then I play back the video and I'm like "yikes!"
