Rival teams from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, France, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Spain battle it out at iconic venues around the world in short, intense races for a total prize pot of $7 million. Teams compete in identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans that fly above the water at electrifying speeds approaching 100 km/h. Fan-centric and close-to-shore, each SailGP Championship culminates in a $2 million, three-boat, winner-takes-all Grand Final.

    I think the commentators slightly miss the point, when (as at 40:00) they say that being so far back at the start helped neither of them. Given that nobody else still had a mathematical chance of making the Grand Final, it seems to me not to matter if they have their own personal race quarter of a lap behind the fleet: all that matters is their relative positions. I guess I am overstating that case in the case of the Spanish, because they needed to be more than one point clear of the French, but all the more reason for the French to try to keep the Spanish from scoring any higher than ninth, by keeping them out of reach of the boat in eighth place.

    • @uxsailing
      @uxsailing Před měsícem

      On Race 4 Spain was 6th due to CAN penalty on Saturday for running over a markbot and French 1st (6 point difference) and in S4 ladderboard Spain was 5 points over France…therefore France had to maintain 1st against DEN, GBR and NZL in race 4 and 5….what is MAKES NO SENSE is France match-racing Spain at start line and letting the whole fleet pass-by. If you notice, before the first mark, Spain was 3rd for Grand Final…since FRA was so far behind and DEN, GBR and NZL ahead. 😱

    Such amazing boats and crews! The commentators are very annoying, though. They editorialize too much and keep over explaining how the boats work while the race is happening. All that could be replaced by second by second play by play description, as many of the position changes during the races are not commented on. And stop telling how the crews are feeling at a given moment. You don't know, you are not on the boat. This sport is fabulous to watch, the action on the course is the best narrative. Sometimes the commentary makes one think they are listening to a professional wrestling show.

    It seems like nothing has any value unless it is put into monetary terms.
    We all know that sailing at this level is an expensive undertaking, there has to be prize money and the costs of a campaign are significant. But can someone please tell the American commentators to stop about the prize money!
    What the viewers are interested in is the racing, I would hazard a guess that the skippers and sailors are more concerned about the racing and the prestige of winning than the monetary reward, once future participation is assured.
    Watching the reaction of the Spanish sailors to their win, the reason for their delight was not primarily the $2M, it was the thrill and joy of beating the best at this game.
    It seems to me to be a particularly American obsession, the only measure of anything is how much it is worth, costs, or is valued in monetary terms. It is a big world out there and most of us are more concerned with the sporting aspects, the technology, the team spirit, battling the elements, the speed, the close racing and a myriad of other considerations, let us enjoy that, the fact that the prize is $2M is irrelevant, focus on the achievement, not the money.

      Isn't that the way it is with extremely expensive sports : Formula One, horse racing, aircraft racing, auto racing in general,etc. ?? The very expensive sports that have been around a lot longer than this brand of sailing don't make a big deal out of the available prize money because they recognize the obvious : that the cost of competing far OUTWEIGHS prize money. Here is an old car racing saying : " If you want to make a small fortune in (cars, horses, aircraft, whatever) racing then start with a large fortune". That is why expensive sports are difficult to get into and to stay into and it helps if a would be participant is privately wealthy or knows people who are.😮😮😮😮

      A Spaniard here, totally agree. But the organization apparently wants to keep the thrill and drama as high as possible to please the non-sailing audience, hence the championship format (together with the ridiculous Kmh speed info of the boats). The football-watching audience wouldn't appreciate a championship whose winner is possibly already defined long ago before the last race or even races (such as in F1 or Moto GP), so they opted for this dubious unfair format. Anyway, it was fun to watch.
