- Since May 5th 1945 US war correspondents of the 101st Airborne Division filmed the invasion of Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg area including the Eagles Nest also called Adolf Hitlers Alpine Fortress.
They documented the last major conquest of the US-Army in order to liberate Europe.
Only few sections of this footage has been published since, everything else remained untouched in the National Archives in Washington, until they were discovered in the mid 80s by BEGAFILM & Videoproduction. This is the only known documentary containing this footage.

Just discovered this amazing film. My father was a 24 year old medic who toured the facility. I can see him in my mind walking around the rooms. He passed away five years ago at 93. I still have the scrapbook his then girlfriend (later his wife and my mother) kept of his assignments. Thanks for the memory!

Interesting watch thank you. I visited the area in October 2018 and visited the Documentation Centre, Berghof site, Hotel Zum Turken and the Mooslahnerkopf Teehaus site.Also found the coke store which you may know about.The whole area is stunningly beautiful and it's easy to see why anyone would pick this location .

I was struck by the many young men in the town in civilian dress and wondered how long before they had discarded (hidden?) their uniforms. Surely they would have been in one branch of the military or another, especially since at the end, the regime was "recruiting" children and old men.

My cousin was in airborne during the Gulf War those guys are nothing to mess with they’re all business he was a Medic he told me he had well over 1200 jumps under his belt that’s a lot of jumps so on top of being a skydiver he was a medic and a soldier so yeah he was a good asset for them he told me about how it was raining oil on them for days he has golf war syndrome now he’s sick with over 20 different diseases some of them they don’t even know what they are so he’s been pretty sick often on I couldn’t imagine having to walk around in the desert with oil raining on you for days on end that’s got to be disgusting makes me wanna shower just thinking about it right now freedom isn’t free my one uncle that was drafted during Vietnam was shipped over there and how he got his Purple Heart is nothing but heroic he saved his whole platoon from an ambush he has literally over 30 confirmed kills from that one 22 hour long battle alone The fucked up thing about it is that he didn’t even start getting disability payments until the year 2000 he got injured in 1969 and came back home it took them 31 years to finally pay for his disability he got his Purple Heart in the mail out of my five uncles and my dad four of them had joined the military my one uncle that got drafted just so happens to be the only one that went to Vietnam all the other ones were stationed out of country he’s the only one that gets drafted and the only one that gets extremely wounded he got shot in the head outside of his physical limitations he’s now schizophrenic and has PTSD it’s really sad how our government treats these soldiers they use them up for everything they need then they spit them up and don’t give them anything there are so many suicides from X soldiers it’s not even funny they’re getting nowhere near the help that they need when they come back they are used up and forgotten it’s absolutely disgusting just look at how our military used our soldiers as guinea pigs during nuclear bomb testings it’s absolutely disgusting how they treat their own soldiers the United States government isn’t much better than Hitler and the Nazis matter of fact The Nazis got their eugenics ideas from the United States of America Hitler actually praised us because in the United States people were dumping their undesirables in asylums tossing them away like garbage so the United States isn’t much better on top of that they shipped a bunch of the doctors and scientists from Nazi Germany brought them here gave them jobs money and didn’t prosecute them for their crimes against humanity absolutely disgusting and atrocious
And I still wonder why anyone,in their right mind,would go to war for their country.Throughout history troops have been treated like sh*t.And the politicians make sure their kids don't get sent into battle.

My late uncle Norman attacked this place. When I was a kid I saw a horribly beautiful Swastika tapestry, about 10' by 6', hanging on his amusement room wall. I have checked with historian Mark Felton, who said that it probably wasn't from the Berghaus but rather from a hotel or restaurant in the town. Norman was later made a county judge. I remember my dad saying no one in the family thought he would survive fighting in France. He parachuted in the area behind Omaha beach. Eisenhower had paratroopers attack Berchtesgaden on the assumption it was an important target. It wasn't.

Wasn't especially difficult. The Berghof had been bombed, and Hitler had no interest in the Eagle's Nest. Only Eva Braun visited it from time to time.

Factual error made at 13:43 when the 327th was mentioned to be a battalion when it was a regiment. The 327th Glider Infantry Regiment was one of four infantry regiments of the 101st Airborne Division, with the other three regiments being: 501st PIR, 502nd PIR, and 506th PIR.

The US Seventh Army reached there first. The 101 Airbourne arrived about a day later.

I am glad I went there it was a profound experience. And when I watched Band Of Brothers who built a striking set similar to the Eagles nest it was just a weird experience and when I see material like this and know I been there.. All those who died building this place many we will never know their names, OK maybe a few might come forward and name them.
I got told off because i think it was the marble fireplace, I moved some stuff because i wanted to see what was written inside the fire itself.
From what I can recall it either had two dates when this development was actually handed over to Adolf Hitler and even a small coat of arms of something, they obviously didn't want me to see that.
Its a frightening experience, just every kind of feeling wrapped into something that was sinister of everything happening at the time.
Real horrors.
In all honestly I must thank those that gave their lives building this place just a shame it was not for a better cause as the place no matter how many Nazi emblems you remove or try to erase from this place its the memory of the many millions who died at the hands of this dictator it was built for but hardly ever used it.
I never went there to marvel at who once owned this place, and that i am standing on the very ground that Adolph at one time walked.
Really I Just don't have a clue why I went there maybe it was curiosity I had the chance so seized upon it so did it.
I don't think I was prepared for what was about to hit me.
Chilling place especially when not many public around, a very ghostly place.
I would not be at all shocked if I found out this place is heavily haunted given the evil history that the Eagles Nest has attached to it.
Let me just add that despite the Eagles Nest, Berchtesgaden is an absolute beautiful place and full of history.
Unfortunately In life we must learn history which will include many things we do not wish to be reminded of we have no choice but to see the Evil that is still out there and learn from it how we prevent this happening ever again, Unfortunately on a near close scale it has, Cambodia being one such country.
History are we not supposed to learn from it, have we learned?

The Berghof was blown up by the Bavarian government in order to prevent the site from becoming a tourist attraction In yet they leave The Eagles Nest Standing.
So what has that become, Is that not a tourist attraction, millions have visited it including little ole me.

The region appears to have had a remarkably easy war, no bombing or food shortages, and the well fed and healthy looking fighting age men seem to have somehow avoided being conscripted to fight on the Eastern front, or any where else for that matter.

@@thegreenbird795 a lot, a friend of mines grandad was SS he made it to America had the blood tattoo under his arm, he acted like a civilian after the Americans overran where he was he faked not being able to see good so he wasn’t forced in to service said the Americans left him alone. He came here with in the 60s.

They destroyed a few other locations even before these were handed back to them. The main purpose were to not have places important to Hitlers regime turned in to Nazi shrines.
Very little, if any, mention of it being the RAF who alone bombed the Berghaus here, no doubt an oversight once again by our American cousins...

The alpine fortress was 100 percent bluff but it served the purpose of diverting forces away from berlin even though the german people would of course prefer to be taken by the americans.
The Allies bombing the Berghof and the other buildings at Obersalzberg amounted to an act of gross stupidity. The war was already as good as over in Europe and the Berghof and SS barracks etc. had been abandoned by most German military personnel. The Berghof and the other buildings including the SS barracks, hotel etc. were superb examples of 1930s architecture and quality construction. The whole area should have been saved for future generations who wished to visit and take a look at the former HQ of Adolf Hitler.
Tell that to the millions of Jews who were slaughtered, starved, burned alive, and other atrocities. So sorry for those who might have enjoyed visiting the luxurious playground of Hitler and his minions. I’m sure the gift shop would have been fabulous.
Oh yes, let’s not forget the thousands of children he ordered into service to fight the Russians invading Berlin. But, he had a really nice fireplace up there….

On the contrary. Black soldiers were usually rear-echelon personnel, supplying the frontline troops, maintaining military infrastructure, manning AA batteries, etc. Physically taxing and important jobs for sure, but much safer than being in a foxhole at the front. Out of the 1.2 million black Americans to serve during WWII, only (and that's a soft "only") 800 were killed in combat.
