You got to remember Skynyrd practiced long and hard to play note for note the same everytime .Onstage or in the studio each song was played the same ,they never wavered from that .They rehearsed lead parts as much as the whole song where most would takeoff on lead and never really play the same thing everytime .Gary doing this was kinda out of his box
True, but if you gonna do a solo at least have a plan of attack it just sounded like he kinda got himself into a mess somewhere and could'nt go anywhere with it I don't know. Gary Rickey and the rest of Skynyrd have some of the best players in the world but like i said it just did'nt work and I think he knew it but hey it was just one moment in rock history but they are still the best.
I've got this on CD, at least a version from the tour. I have older solos with Ed and Randall Hall too. Randall may have solo'd the best of them all. Not impressed with Gary's , he could work on somthing funkier I feel
It was obvious this was a uncomfortable place for Gary to be put he wasn't an improviser, he maybe should have written something for this part of the show, him bending strings for a solid minute was kinda embarrassing to watch, off the cuff soloing wasn't his strength.
