Knitting is, all things, considered, a cheap(ish) hobby. You don't need all that many tools to get started. And that's why I typically don't talk too much about knitting tools here on my channel. Yet, I do get a lot of questions about my yarn/needles/etc so in this video, I wanted to share my favorite knitting tools. Things I accumulated in the past 30 years and really came to enjoy. Now, there's absolutely no need to buy the exact same knitting needles, yarn, scissors, and stitch markers that I am using. It all boils down to personal preferences. But the general items, that's certainly something you might want to put in your project bag as well or to use to compile your very own knitting toolkit.

I keep a lotion bar in my bag. It’s wonderful because you don’t get a wet or greasy feel in your hands, but you do get conditioning without mess or worry about leaks.

Through all my years of test driving lots (and LOTS) of tools, currently I don't leave home without my tin pencil box which houses scissors, stitch markers, needle gauge, end caps, tightener, crochet hook, flat paper row counter, tapestry needles, etc. in short, it holds everything except a tape measure Which I carry loosely in. my bag. I 'm also fond of ruler tape that adheres to patterns which makes for easy measuring. As someone who has occasionally used a pencil or shawl pin as a knitting needle, I agree 100% with your common sense approach to tools.

Thank you for sharing this with us! You know what? I actually don't knit with real knitting needles I just created my own with kebab skewers. I asked my father to do the same for DPNs. I actually have real steel knitting needles but I personally don't like them because they make sounds that drive me crazy. So... I don't like to spend money on easy DIY items.
That is awesome! and i mean...historically speaking, most metal knitting needles were created using wire blanks. So, your method sounds very valid to me!
I tried to use skewers to knit. Very grabby
I went to a Montessori charter school and we would knit and drink tea while listening to audio books. Since the school needed dozens of knitting needles for all of the students we made our own with wood dowels and a pencil sharpener. The pencil sharpener had a variety of hole sizes so we could make needles from different size dowels. Then, we used sandpaper to blunt the tip and smooth out any splinters. Lastly, but most importantly, we rubbed beeswax all over needles to make them slippery and smooth for the yarn to glide over.
What fun to see what you actually use when doing 'serious' knitting for yourself vs knitting for us.
I have several sets of circular needles because they work differently with different yarn combinations - some more slippery than others.
And yes, I can be dazzled by the array of scissors out there.

I love my chiagoo needles. The noise they make while I'm working is soothing to me. I did alot of research before buying them because I had never had interchangeable knitting needles before and I generally go with low budget options. Your video reviewing them was one of the ones I watched when considering them. Now that I'm so used to them I know I made a good choice
Norman, I love your channel. But I totally agree with Hailey. Chiaogoo are my go-to needles for many reasons, but mostly because the cords don't curl up like Addi cords do. I love the feel of the stainless steel, and I actually *like* that there are different sized cables for large and small needles. The one-size-fits-all approach of Addi needles is the reason they only go down to US4. I know you love Karbonz, but with my set, the tips have come off and there's a irritating scraping noise on some of the sizes that kind of like nails on a chalkboard.
But, as you say all the time, what matters is that you find the needles and tools that work best for you. Thanks again for everything you do.

Thanks for making an effort and keeping your reviews neutral, Norman! I watched all your needle reviews and bought a pair of Chiaogoo red lace to try it out... And now I own the whole Chiaogoo collection and they are the only needles I use. I am a continental knitter, tight hands just like you and our yarn and needle size choices are very similar.
I apprecite greatly that you have always kept your reviews objective and honest. I am superised that you personally don't like Chiaogoo alll that much -- but it makes perfect sense, because their needles (especially the shorties) are difficult for people with bigger hands. I am happy that you explained things clearly and always give context, or I might get discouraged and missed the chance to meet with my perfect needles :-)

When I bought the wool for my first pair of socks (I am on my second pair now and they look much nicer thanks to all the great advice in your videos. =) ), I was very happy to discover that it had its label attached with a stitch marker. A very nice idea from the manufacturer.
yeah, I love it when they do that. Costs nothing but you will instantly befriend a fellow knitter!
Another convert to the neck light! Purchased one (based on your recommendation from a few months ago) and goodness, what a difference it makes. I recently had eye surgery (ah yes, age brings on issues with eyes!) and the neck light has been an absolute must now! I've always used Aero brand knitting needles (the metal ones rather than the plastic) as they were what was most common in England when I was growing up, plus I inherited my mum's knitting tools. I recently switched to bamboo needles - even though I was given a complete size set back in the 80s - and have found them easier to use. Less dropped stitches due to arthritic fingers (yarn doesn't slip off so easily), and a lot quieter. Now I can hear my cat purring - he likes to sit on my lap when I knit! Thank you, Norman...you are such a joy to watch and learn from!

Knitting with my kitty nearby is one of my greatest joys. I know its been a year since you made this post but I wanted to ask if you had tried some of the crafting lights sold at Hobbycraft? My favourite is a rechargeable unit that I can adjust to three different light intensities. It’s useful for seeing when I knit but also what different yarns will look like in different light levels. And since its rechargeable I can move it to where I am without being tied to a plug socket. It’s great for when my neck light isn’t quite bright enough.
@@phoenixfire8978 I'm not familiar with Hobbycraft...I live in Canada so a lot of the items that people recommend (mainly US) are not available except through Amazon. The neck light I purchased has been a wonder! Not only for knitting but when I sew or read - it has the 3 different light intensities and is quite lightweight...I've occasionally fallen asleep while reading and so far haven't strangled myself!
@@danutagajewski3330 Hobbycraft is a high street craft store chain in the UK. You can get basic crafting items for okayish prices. Craft lights are one of the items they sell that is competitively priced and really worth the markup brick and mortar stores have to charge compared to online shopping.

This video is so apropos! I get great joy from putting together a starter kit for beginner knitters.
During lunch break at work this week, my friend Mary told me that her 9 year old granddaughter just started knitting, and asked me where to go for nice yarn. During our conversation, I was working on a knitted scarf done in gray/white/pink/black variegated yarn (Hobby Lobby “I Love This Yarn”).
As we talked, I was getting more dissatisfied with how the yarn color worked up. I asked her if Brooklyn would like this yarn….”Yes.”…..I pulled the fabric off the needles, and wound the yarn back on the skein. I gave her the yarn, and also the needles(Chiaogoo bamboo circular). She wanted to reimburse me, but I told her that she would be doing me a favor by helping me cut down on my stash.
That evening I went through my stash and made up a tool kit of useful things. Basically what you showed us in your video. It all got put in a dark pink lightweight backpack. Mary and I thanked each other the next day.

I got one of the neck lights that you suggested and it’s wonderful! I love to use it while watching a show on my iPad in a half dark room while using one of these. It’s extremely easy to see my knitting that way! I liked it’s so much that I bought another one right away just in case something happens to it! I found that if I lie back in the recliner with it on my neck it hurts a lot because I’ve had multiple neck injuries. I don’t think it would affect anybody else like that. So what I did was I just lay it on my chest up by my shoulder and and aim it at my knitting. Works perfectly. This is off topic, but I want you to know how likable you are. Watching you talk about the things that you like was so enjoyable. “It’s not like I am building a rocket“ 😂😂😀🌷

Well here is one more tip tho it will be a bit more expensive. There are headlights (like when yuo want to go into a cave or so) that might work better in these circumstances.

I have two of them. One I hate because it slips off to one side all the time! Arg. My cheap ones that don't hold a charge and have more flexible arms are way better.

Thank you for your sharing of the items you prefer to use. I was amazed at how many of the same things I use. However, my favorite knitting needles are the Kollage square interchangeable knitting needles and the Knitter's Pride square shorties. The first set of interchangeable knitting needles I got was a set of Knitter's Pride acrylic needles, mainly to see if I would like using them. Between my knitting needles and crochet hooks, I would hate to think how much money I have invested in my tools. When I reached 65, I started loom knitting an added knitting looms to my collection. It is a good thing I had such an understanding husband and before he passed away, he added a lot to my collection.
yeah..I too feel lucky that I do have such an understanding partner. It makes all the difference.
Kollage are my go to needles. So easy to handle.

I really appreciate this video, as someone who finds a lot of joy in my needles being "pretty", but is all to aware how quickly the hobby can take over the budget if you don't actually pay attention to it with how consumerist things get hearing both of those messages so clearly laid out was great.
Also those socks? Impressive, pure and solidly impressive to how they've held up.
yeah..i mean they look pretty...well..worn..but i just can't part with them. I wash them, they are clean and at the end of the day they are totally covered by te shoes ..so i dunno. I knitted a new pair which I never wear (yet).
@@NimbleNeedles I'm pretty novice so take that into consideration but have you thought about dyeing them? They and the stain are pale enough that would be my thought of how to extend the life.

You are so cute "Wayne." I love having the Granny Knitting in public bags. I have had so many people come up to me and talk about their memories of their grandmothers or mothers knitting. I was in a Hospital ER once and rather rough looking guys asked me about my crocheting and I could see his whole face and demeanor soften talking about him Mom and good memories. We talked about how Moms used to be and how hard modern life is for Moms. It was a moment outside ourselves (I was in a hospital ER after all), and to think about nice parts of our lives. I agree with your philosophy. I love beautiful useful things. Over the years I’ve improved my knitting tools and choose yarn that feels good in my hands. I enjoy bamboo or other wooden needles for the soft sound and feel. Last year I bought a kit for a fair isle hat from Shetland. The wool is so scratchy! I have to finish it before I start another project. That is my rule. I don’t want a big stash or unfinished projects sitting around. Perhaps you might comment about these situations. ❤
i don't have a no-stash rule. That would be impossible to combine with my knitting business. So..well :)
Another fab video, Norman! I am very sensitive to textures and sound, so I have a feeling (no pun intended) the Chiaogoo needles may not be for me. Loved your scissors collection! I have some fancier snips, but elementary school scissors are my go-to because I am clumsy. They give me better control, if I drop them I won’t stab myself, and if I sit on them they’re less likely to poke a hole in my leather chair! BTW, I attach the barrel counter to my project with a safety-pin style stitch holder, so it’s not in my way. I loved how you explained that some yarns and tools look better on camera, but aren’t necessarily your favorites or particularly practical. That’s so important for new knitters to understand!
yeah. Sadly I really haven't found a way around it. I mean..i do get quite a lot of questions and i always kind of reluctanctly share the yarn I am typically using for my tutorials. Because, other than for these videos and a dishcloth or two, I wouldn't use it >.<
but doing all videos in black cashmere yarn is probably not ideal either, eh? ;-)
@@NimbleNeedles It drives me crazy when someone is demonstrating a complicated technique with dark fingering weight yarn, bad lighting, and poor focus. Thank goodness we have teachers like you who really think about this!
I rewlly disliked the chiaogoo needles because of that sound and the way the needles brush against each other but I find the smaller sizes (5mm and below okay). I had to knit with earplugs using my 6.5mm needles and I hated how it felt so much that I switched to my Knitpro needles instead.
I love my knitters pride and knitpro and knit picks as they are interchangeable with each other
it's the very same company after all - just sold under different names and labels. Lykke is also interchangable and the lantern moon stuff as well.
Thank you Norman! I just taught myself to knit and weave this year, but I've been a long time crocheter, embroiderer, cross stitcher, and general fiber addict. Thank you for pointing out over consumption. When I feel the need to go look at new tools, or new fibers, my first stop is actually the thrift store, followed by estate sales and yard sales. I enjoy saving money, and bringing new use to old tools.
Hi Norman. I love 💛 my Chiao Goo needles and the sound of steel sliding on steel! It's what you said: personal preference. My hands are small, so the 4" tips fit them nicely! I am so glad you are sharing your likes and dislikes while allowing me my preferences. Happy knitting!
I have Addi, Knitters Pride, Lykke and Chiaogoo interchangeable sets. I found your comments on Chiaogoo interesting. I love them and dislike the others for magic loop because of the cables. I have more problems with reverse ladders (stitches too tight) with cables that have a coil memory than I do with the Chiaogoo cables which have no memory. I love the slick the Addis for fast knitting, and use my Lykke set for slippery yarn. Chiaogoo are a nice middle of the road option for me and are my go-to set. I guess that is why there are so many options for knitting needles as we all have our own preferences!
I typically knit traveling magic loop as I only use it for Fair Isle. Guess that too explains why I don't like CG overly much. But yeah, it's so great that there are so many different options out there.
Regarding the lobster claw stitch markers, I also have put them aside, pretty as they are, I have found a second use for them, as zipper pulls

The lightbulb stitch markers are the only ones you need. I have bought many different kinds and the only ones I end up using are the lightbulbs.
I keep a small pkg of dental floss in my notions bag.I use it for lifelines! I use a piece and thread it in the keyhole of my Knitters Pride Zing needle and just knit it through!

Hi Norman, I would love to make a video suggestion. Please make a video discussing how you finish knitted garments, blocking, steaming, seam together and then block or block and then seam etc to get a polished and professional finish. I feel finishing is just as important as knitting and can make or break a project - I'd love to know what your thoughts are on the subject.
I feel the same. 30% is yarn choice and another 30% finishing techniques. So, the topic is alron my list. But dunno when I find the time.
I’m glad I’m a craftoholic…. with my own industrial and domestic sewing machines….as well as a knitter/crochet… I can make my own bags and all the things!🫶
As for needles, I’m a knitpro Symfonie shorties interchangeables gal… I bought them all separately as I could afford till I had what I wanted - wood > metal for me!
Hi Norman thank you so much for sharing your personal knitting choices with us I love your beautiful scissors and your tape measure and wooden embroidery needles case I just love anything vintage they are so pretty but also practical , I have a lot of my grandmothers knitting and sewing items ( including sewing machines that still are in working order , they made things to last back then ) and I’m a grandma myself so that shows how old they are lol and I treasure and use most of them I prefer them to new ones 😊amanda xx💕💖

THat being said, a lot of the old stuff lasts so long because the technology was so simple. A modern, computorized sewing machine is a loooot more complex. Tho, admittedly, a lot of people actually don't need it ^^

I gave up on stitch markers, I just use some wool joined in a small loop with a slip stitch. That way no bulk is added when I knit.

I love my chiaogoo set of needles but I don’t knit much magic loop yet. I am a fan of shorties for knitting in the round. It suits me really well.

I really enjoyed watching this thank you. I have also enjoyed reading the comments as well, they really illustrated your point that the tools we use, particularly the needles, are a personal preference. I have a set of knit pro interchangeables that I absoluely love but I find that I prefer the control of using wooden dpn's. I love finding out what others prefer and one of my favourite ways of getting new needles is when someone is having a bit of a needle destash and offers me the opportunity to go through what they are getting rid of before they send the rest to the op shop/ thrift shop/second hand store.

When I hear how you knit and troubles you find, I compare to my situation and avoid products that I can see causing me troubles. I have my favs too, but sometimes yours and mine do mesh. 😂

On the needles you said that come loose, look ans see if they have wee tiny rubber o-rings on the base of the threads. If they don't, you can put one on each side and that should help with the needles unthreading.
I have nail clippers with a mini emery piece on it to clean up rough nails. I hadn't thought of it as being one of my tools before. 🙂
When travelling I like small projects like gloves & socks so I got a large pencil case & my notions are in an old travel sweetie tin which all fit nicely in my sling bag

The tip about the the neck light was super helpful. Will be so handy in a travel when the light conditions can vary. There were times when I couldn't find a good reading place because the place we rented didn't have good lights for that.

Thank you for sharing your collection of favourite knitting tools! I loved seeing your collection of scissors but also your special knitting needles. For me, knitting needles are one of the biggest keys to how much I enjoy the knitting experience. I am not an expert so the stainless steel needles are my least favourite & I didn’t ever think it might also be the sound they make, but you’re so right! I much prefer a colourful wooden needle. It helps me enjoy my slow knitting experience! 😊
I thought that I was the only one who really didn’t like Chiagoo. I love Karbonz but wished they came in came in light colors for dark yarn. For DPNs most of my collection is Clover bamboo. The rest of my collection came from my late grandmother and aunts - a lot of Susan Bates and Silvalume! This was fun and I am loving reading the comments.

haha...yeah. I mean have a interchangeable knitting needle review here on my channel where I tried to stay as objective as possible (and I think I succeeded). Still, I think one of the most common replies is that there are adaptors for the different CG cables. This is, of course, true. But to me it feels like: Okay, I need to spend an additional 8$, and end up with another join all to make things work?
I mean, again, I am very happy that so many people found tools that work so well for them. That's something super special. But it's not for me.
Knitter's Pride are my favorite needles too. I have 2 sets of Addi interchangeable, but I am not fond of the way they attach (turn and click). So Knitters Pride for me! Since I'm retired and never travel, I prefer just using the cloth drawstring bags I buy from makers on etsy to hold different projects. I do, however, have a nice faux leather large bag (from Knit Picks) I use if I go to a friend's house to knit or crochet with, or if I go for a doctor's appointment, that I put the cloth drawstring bags that hold my WIPs in. I also have several small plastic boxes I keep notions in (scissors, needle stoppers, needles for weaving in ends, a little crochet hook I use if I drop a stitch, measuring tapes, lotion, emory board, nail clippers, etc.). I try to keep all these little notions box contents the same so which ever one I grab it will have all the tools I need. I enjoyed seeing all your knitting tools.
@@NimbleNeedles EVERY brand has connectors and joins, which keeps you having to buy EXTRA cables! I think they're genius and personally use them often.

I admire your perspective on this topic. It's hard to resist buying the "next hot" tool or notion that many recommend. My mother instilled in me the importance of buying quality, not going for cheap items. I really liked your comments and thank you for sharing items from your collections. Very cool (especially the scissors!).

yeah, i saw these two. As I mostly pick mine off from cloth (and yarn) tags, I only got the golden ones. Never actually bought a set, lol :P
Thanks for the tip about the “shorties” as placeholders, that is so helpful! The placeholders I have always are either cumbersome, or pulling the fabric in a way that’s probably not great for it…I’ll pick some of those up! Karbonz are my go to needles, also…they are amazing in the way they combine all of the positives of wood and metal needles, imo. I use them for nearly everything.
