ABOUT MASSIMILIANO
Massimiliano Martinelli is an Italian cellist known for his flawless technique, strong versatility and soul-stirring expressivity.
He made his debut as soloist in 2007, playing Krzysztof Penderecki’s “Concerto Grosso per tre violoncelli e orchestra” alongside the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana (OGI). Since then, he has performed several concerts around Europe and Asia, collaborating with world-famous orchestra such as Riccardo Muti’s Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma (Italy), Jyväskylä Sinfonia (Finland), Sinfonieorchester Basel (Switzerland), Gyeongnam Symphony Orchestra (Korea) and Hokkaido Philarmonic Youth Orchestra (Japan), and has appeared as Guest First Cello at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
At the age of 23, he was appointed Principal Cello in Riccardo Muti’s Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, a role he retained for three years, performing throughout Switzerland, Malta, Russia, Spain and Italy. He went on to audition for the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, where he played First Cello until 2008. In 2010 he was hand-picked by Maestro Daniele Gatti as First Solo Cellist of Zurich’s Opera House, starting a collaboration that lasted six years.
Also a well-known cello professor, Mr. Martinelli teaches at a number of Italian universities as well as at Zurich’s Konservatorium, and hosts various summer courses. He’s taught as Guest Professor at the Toscanini Music University of Ribera, Italy, and in 2016 received an invitation by the University of Hokkaido to give cello and chamber music masterclasses alongside his wife, cellist Fulvia Mancini.
Born in Apulia, Mr. Martinelli studied at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome) with Francesco Strano, before relocating to Basel to further his education with Ivan Monighetti. He has won thirty-three national and international competitions, most notably the First Prize in the International Cello Competition of Liezen (Austria), the First Prize in the Arturo Bonucci Cello Competition, and the Fifth Prize in the Gyeongnam International Music Competition (Korea).
Together with his wife Fulvia Mancini, he is the Artistic Director of the Festival Regina Musica al Castello near Rome. The couple also forms the duo Mr & Mrs Cello, and in early 2019 won a Special Award at the 1st Vienna International Music Competition after the release of their stunning debut EPs, ‘Crossover One’ and ‘Crossover Two’.

The sky is grey, the tall dark trees move with the waves on the Salish Sea, and this beautifully played Bach completes a perfect January afternoon. Thank you for this gift.
Hello, from another shore of the Salish Sea! ❤🌲❤🌲❤
What is that quote, please? Sounds intriguing
When I was little, spry and in elementary school I remember sitting in the maestros trailer, wanting to learn the violin. "All the cool kids play the violin" I would complain. She came around, I gripped my seat before she took my hands and inspected them like I was being told my fortune. She grinned. "You will play the cello." I can't quite remember if I got huffy but I'm sure I did. The boy beside me looked confused as my expression blanked. He was my senior and knew how to play the cello well, he reassured me with a smile "its the best one."
I can't tell you how much I wish I had a cello in my hands right now. Such a wonderful sound, I don't think there is anything that can ever top the sound of a cello and the feeling you feel as you run your bow just above the bridge. Going down was the best sound in the world, the moment you tilt the bow ever so slightly, creating that deep note. I haven't played in years but I'd like to hope someday I can come back to this and say I finally have my own. One of the most beautiful string instruments in the world
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Sierra. You're good with words - has anyone ever told you that? 😊 we're sorry to hear that you haven't played in a while though. Sometimes recording studios and music shops rent instruments. Are there any in your area?
Honey, I am 59 and have only been playing the cello for a little over a year now. Your words about your cello experience are exquisite. Please get back to it! It is NEVER too late. I know it is a pricey instrument, really all the strings are...that being said, Amro Music here in Memphis set me up with payments...and there you go.., the rest is history. Its so worth it!
I'm 73. Six months ago I've started playing cello. The Toronto Public Library (Ontario, Canada) borrows musical instruments to its members for free, but not longer than for 2 months. After two months I knew that I'll continue to play, and bought myself a relatively cheap cello. I've promised to myself that I'll buy myself a better instrument for my 75-th birthday ...
I know that I'll never be able to play Bach Suites for Cello Solo in their real tempo, but playing them at less than half the speed still gives me immense pleasure ...
My suggestion: do not try to learn a string instrument on your own, you need a teacher, otherwise you easily learn wrong things that are very hard to un-learn ...
@@HALIDONMUSIC ah thank you so much! There are some! But so many have started going out of business not many people in my area enjoy instruments, I definitely think I should check out to see if I can rent! I'm stubborn headed and want to have my own but man renting doesn't sound bad!! I love all of your posts btw!
@@dubravkobarac6472 Yes yes! I think you are absolutely right! I can't even begin to remember how hard it was to practice at home, replay the practice at school proudly and then my teacher to just sigh haha. I love that youre learning the Cello. You're your own Bach at this point! Thts really cool the Library let's members use instruments, love the idea!

May be Bach' s violin solo
May it always be summer for you.
I've played cello since 9. I didn't like it that much at the time, but continued to learn it anyway, because of my family and because I believed that one day, I would start to like it.
I am 17 now and here I am, starting to truly like it and being greatful that I can play the cello.
I play classical piano at the grade 12 level and I wish I had learned the cello. I’m 63 and believe there’s still time to learn. The cello now suits my soul.
I started playing at 8! It was the same for me, but now I like it and am learning this very piece!
Glad you listened to your parents.
I envy you so much! I play clarinet and oboe but had I known how much I love the sound of a cello I would do my whole chilhood over ❤🌻
Yes, a man is lucky who can play a kind of music instrument . You will always have your cello to accompany you.
First, he understands dynamics. Second, he does not use too much vibrato. Third, he does not run all of the notes together, he allows the phrases to breathe. Fourth, he does not grind down on the bow, he keeps a subtle touch. Fifth, he keeps the pieces as the dances they are meant to be, not turning them maudlin. Sometimes I wish he made quiet phrases even quieter to set off the louder ones. And well-recorded. Such poetry.
Your comment is absolute on Point.
Reminds me of a "slower" Mischa Maisky, but with comparable levels of depth and nuance, shuffling from extremes of softness and intensity. No wonder: I just looked it up, and they were both trained in of Rostropovich!
Nursing student, listening to this while studying. It's incredibly beautiful. Thank you.
how'd the test go?
毎朝聴いてます。家族がまだ寝てる時間に小さな音量で一人で聴くのが好きです。
It was a quiet and warm evening. A man, in his 80s, was playing the cello. He was playing some music pieces of Bach. It was Bliss and heaven. It was gorgeous. The music felt like it was in my body. The gorgeous view of the collapsing skies due to rain was an addition to the power of the music. It was pouring heavily. But the man did not stop. It was dedication towards music in another level.
Lovely and thank you. It was both a warm evening and there were collapsing skies due to rain? Chin scratch...
Bach's cello suites are the music of my soul.
I can only aspire to one day be able to even /adequately/ play these perfect suites.
This is so rewarding after watching bad news on TV due to the virus. Halidonmusic you bring an oasis amongst all the current despair in the world. Thank you. Wishing you well.

Einfach wunderschön und kostbar. So voller Liebe und Seele.....aus Zeiten die nie wieder kommen werden....
“It is God who makes the music. I just write the notes” - J.S. Bach
I agree! Praise God!
Yes. Bach was and is correct. With age I have found this to be true.
I agree.💯💕🎵🎶🎵
Bach was a Lutheran and wrote many of the works still used in Lutheran church services today.
Thank you

I am fascinated by your music. It heals me, calms me down and entertains me. I feel endless enjoyment bathing in it . My room is now a piece of paradise. The choice is phenomenal and the style angelic. Thanks!!!
Through the short period of time of hardships in my life,
I realized that Heaven came to Earth through Bach music!!
It was about 20 years ago that I attended a nearby coffee house with an adjacent room set aside for anything from a poetry gathering, exploring the Tarot, or a tiny music ensemble. There I witnessed and learned that the Cello had much more potential than as a "back-up" for other instruments like the violin or piano. I was immediately enraptured by depth and range of sounds!
So here we are now! ....FINALLY the Cello has achieved the honor that the violin and piano has had for centuries!
An absolutely mesmerising reading of Bach's masterpiece. So smooth and easy, he knows intimately every note and nuance. Massimo' now climbs to the top three (maybe even #1!) of my several copies of the suites. Absolutely STUNNING performance.
massimo plays the cello so insanely well!
thank you HALIDON MUSIC for creating such an amazing video! hearing this makes me feel comfortable!
Music is a God’s whisper telling us that everything will be okay; classical music brings peace to our souls.
Yes thats correct!!!
Especially these Beautiful suites.
Until god's whisper Turns into an At&t add.

Every autumn, I am into Bach
❤❤❤
So, soon you will take a break and then later come Bach?
Moved me to tears. Refined, elegant, emotive, provoking.
his song has POWER!! As you can see, it was a magical atmosphere over there.
Me and my friends (2:12) and every other person, we were praying, crying, praising and seeking God to send his revival over Australian bushfires and for rain.
Believe it or not, after we left summercamp that night, every single person felt the rain in their skin and then we had this huge flood and the bushfires are gone now!! So believe in Him.
That's everything He wants from us🕊❤️
Meh.
Bach definitely fits winter season. Especially cello~~~~~~ sooo cold!!
True!!!
Que maravilla de interpretación la disfruto en la ciudad de México
Muchs gracias Raul! Saludos desde Italia :)
He plays this very expressively. At times, it feels aggressive like a death metal guitar, then again very tender, but with some almost mockingly rough notes thrown in. I especially like when it gets this aimless, wandering feeling, suits my mood very well right now.
Yes, it’s a very beautiful and convincing baroque interpretation. I really like when baroque music is played with such intensity.
Good morning from The United States of America Mr. Martinelli! It is highly pleasant to hear your performance. What a great man was he who wrote this music 🎶 I am greatfull for this Legacy indeed. Thank you!
Bach! The greatest composer of all time!!
Thank you. Have been stressed out with my work. Your work calms my soul and it gives me much joy! ❤
素敵な音楽を聞きながら、今日の日を終えることが出来ます。ありがとう
Bach's music says to me that every note has each role to be done for all by helping each other to be more beautiful and bright. My soul feel happy, bright, and healthy while listening to Bach's music. Massimiliano Martinelli's Bach playing is so soft, graceful, and elegant to put a smile on my face. Thanks.
Agreed. Not a wasted note.
This brings peace to me.
Such perfect flows of beauty and passion...bravissimo Massimiliano Martinelli! Thank you for sharing your music!
Ecco!
Wonderful, Massimiliano! This my favorite collection of Bach cello suites, which are my go to focus music. I study and work with this on and it is not only pleasant and lovely, but seems to help me center and stay on task. The way it takes you down with the low notes and reflect on things from one perspective then take you back up and view things from a higher note and perspective - it works for me. Love it.
I'm a cellist and have been playing these for a long time. First, I envy his instrument, it's nice woody sound. Every phrase of each suite has its own integrity yet connect to those before and after, in its sound, speed, volume, implied counterpoint, tone color, emorional import, and notes to be emphasized or de-emphasized. Marinelli captures most of them but not all; a perfect performance would nail all of them. This is perfectly fine for most most listeners (thankfully, or we'd all be out of a job). If I could sit down w you I could easily illustrate
Per suonare la Suites in questo modo, oltre ovviamente alla solida preparazione tecnica, c'è una enorme preparazione umana all'esecuzione. Mai come in questo caso ci viene restituito in modo forte, limpido e rispettoso lo spirito di Bach. Grazie Maestro Martinelli.
How can anyone dislike this?? Those who have desliked this, please listen again & review your opinion. A lot of efforts are put in by this great team.
Some people like bongo drums and not cellos I guess.
@@jamesgtmoore Some people don't like life in general, they just like to deslike things. I thing they can't appreciate real good music.
@@thiagovilha7570 Why do you think that this happens?
I mean, some people will click dislike if they don't like the interpretation. But I agree - this channel works so hard in providing these mixes of music for everyone that it hardly warrants a dislike! I also read somewhere that even a dislike on a video can help the algorithm somehow? Because it is considered engagement with the video. Not positive, though.
Bach has been with me through every thick and thin and feeling blessed
Bach + Cello = Beautiful
Bach + Cello = Bello
Bach + Cello = Celch
Beautiful, the best music to get through these difficult times.
Thank you for listening, Martha. Massimiliano is currently recording Reger's Cello Suites at his home in Switzerland. We look forward to sharing them with you all 🙏 watch this space!
Such a rich, lovely, yet concise sound. I love this gentleman's playing filled with life and passion. Lovingly played and recorded.
Thank you so much, Salariatus! You've perfectly captured Massimiliano's spirit. 😊
Perfectly stated. This entire presentation is a gift.
Because of complexity and multilayerity of Bach, I prefer Cello, Flut and Lute. Bach had a large and extensive knowledge about music in his era and this makes him complex!
Thanks a lot dear Bach...
I love cello. I love Bach. Since i start listening you i felt my heart sayng...'Uau! That's insane'. Thanks from Brazil.
This piece enhances the spirit. Thank you!!
I always love Bach's cello pieces. They are always so deep and relaxing!🤗

HALIDON MUSIC, hadn't been able to attend my usual "date" with you due to illness, and now I have such a delight double surprise: the beautiful and impressive sound of the cello, and.Bach's complete suits masterfully played by the accomplished cellist Massimiliano Martinelli. Thank you.

Bach est l'un des musiciens les plus important de la renaissance
Merci, un choix merveilleux,
euh de l'époque baroque plutôt (1685-1750)
In complete agreement on that. Amazing amazing renditions of some of my all time favorite pieces.
Aurait-il aussi inventer l'ortograffe?
mon cher ami, Bach est un musiciend Baroqueien (I'm american.. sorry for the horrible french)
So beautiful and I am playing it to help me draw pictures!
I'm a guitar player and these suites are amazing on guitar but can never be fully realized on an unbowed instrument.
You can't beat the range of the cello, it so closely mimics the range of human voice that we can just identify with it
You should hear my rendition on the triangle
No vocalist has the range of a ‘cello.
@@michaelfriedmann2327 That's is completely wrong. The cello is famed for being in vocal register. That's why so many vocal songs can be transcribed to cello without changing keys. 4 octaves is the full range.
Geffory Tate from Queensrych has a 3 octave range. Celine Dion had a similar range but just a bit higher.
There are singers in this world that have up to 7 as an octave range. And there are freaks that have 10 as a range.
Check you facts buddy, I'm not sure where you got your music education from but I'd check my notes if I were you.
The range not necessary of one average human’s voice, but cumulatively the range of human voices (think of a choir rather than a soloist…soprano to bass).
Does anyone play them on the violin?
Incrível, acalma, emociona e revigora 😍😍
Fantastico, che suono e che tecnica. Complimenti! You are the best!
The best way to keep focussed and concentrated. Thanks for this wonderful interpretation and this master piece of Johann Sebastian Bach. I love this music!
