Gary Moore tribute - 4 takes of 'Still got the blues' on 10th anniversary of his death (Feb 6/2011)

- Can't believe it's been 10 years today. (Feb 6/2021) Gary was one of my influences growing up, mainly his fusion work in Colosseum 2 and Thin Lizzy 'Black Rose'. I learned all those songs. I liked some of the 80's work but it got to be a bit to commercial. Everyone knows his big hit 'Still got the blues' and I had never played it before these takes. I don't copy Gary's solos, because that is a big no no when playing blues. If you can't play your own thing in a blues, you need to start over and learn what the blues is. I only learn the chord structure and then I do my own thing. This song seemed to click most of the time with the public and I had a chance to improvise and make it my own, which is a win win. These are 4 of my takes from summer 2019. Enjoy and let's give Gary a toast! Fans shake my hand at 24:30.
1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. I've been doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from the downtown eastside, Vancouver, Canada. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes. see this video: • A buskumentary - Googl...
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking is banned since 2020. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression. This video is from 2019.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. If you enjoyed this performance, please think about supporting me on patreon/paypal tip/bandcamp. They are my only sources of income.
4) I'm a musician that writes my own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar.
5) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs here closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. Live music is dead, as well as banned. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) If you have any session work, performance gigs, or endorsements to offer, contact Robin at shatnershairpiece@yahoo.com
Want to tip and make up for the apathy I see everyday on the street? Support this channel and my original music, Busking is banned and I make zero from youtube. If you see an ad here, it's the record company collecting from auto monetization:

thousands of dark days that He made bright again...it is in heaven, when we realize the good things we did to others. This gentle man makes people happy...
Well said, it is a big mistake not to speak up.
If I came across this man playing on the street, I would just have to stop and take it all in. It wouldn't matter if I was late for work, missed my bus, or whatever. I would just have to do it and relish the moment. Play on, brother!
Same!!!
I'm right next to ya!
Goddamn, only quality jazz and screaming outpatients in Toronto's street music scene?
Take him with you everywhere, this musician is (prolifically!!!) on Bandcamp! Build your own world of awesome sounds of Street or Studio. Powerful, passionate, precise sound. A master at play.
40 years semi-pro drummer me. Mr Moore would have been looking down at you sir and tipped his hat to you. I never got to play with him but I did play with his half brother Cliff. I know you`re good because you made me cry. Thank you and never stop what you`re doing.
Had me at Gary Moore. Once I closed my eyes you took me away where everything is right with the world.
Just better than quality it’s god sent in universe world world class 🙏🙏🙏🙏🎸🎸🎸
Man, if that doesn't get peoples attention nothing will. What a great song and very well played sir.
Agree....., are they deaf??
@@heroldable like someone mentioned, I am not even plugged in. Using in ear monitors. Lol!
@@shatnershairpiece Your playin' is music to my ears. I love the 60s 70s 80s rockguitar.....; but there is something about the sound from yours, ....; not direct unfamiliar, but something.....IDK...about continouitinity or something...!?
Anyway, the interpretations, in itselves; 👌
Found your channel few days ago. I had almost stopped listrning to music....; been so busy following politics and events around the world...., there's a "robotisation" of people going on, much like the old sovjet, I think.
Expression of arts, the beautyful things in the world, are supressed..
IDK how to put it. Im from Norway, so please ecsuse my English.
You are lightening up in a dark world. Keep on.
@@heroldable thanks. I grew up on 60’s, 70s guitar so you will hear those influences in my playing. I stopped watching all news media about two months ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I’ve completely blocked it out and will only concentrate on music.
@@shatnershairpiece Keep on! There's a god above. May he bless your decision. 👍
Your guitar gently weeps for and pays great tribute to Gary Moore. He is looking down with admiration and pride. Thank you for that rendition.
This song was one of my mine and my wifes favorites, sadly I lost her last year and now I sit here after a 3rd time playing this back in tears, very expressive playing, thank you.
Just earned a yourself a patreon sub too.
my sincere condolences and thanks. music hits us in the deepest places.
1yr 1 month since I buried mine & it's music that still connects us, I watch silly cartoons & can't get her opinion on them anymore, yes the tears make it hard but also so close, so many memories, 👍🇦🇺🖖
So sorry man.but garry brings everybody around the world togethr, and nothing wrong with a few tears.stay safe, greetings from galway🇨🇮
Sorry for your loss, sir
@@ronforde It's all part of life, but music is great partner for any emotion, the vids of 2yr old going off to Rob's ZZtops is gorgeous & we all know it's importance when we're full of oats, & later as we mellow & appreciate life, Ta 🖐️🇦🇺
It's a shame to see that 99,9 percent of the people don't have a notice to this wonderful music... 😭
Society is a cruel jungle. You shouldn't even bother of this 99, 9%.
People are accustomed to hearing great music all of the time. But they lack the understanding difference in hearing someone LIVE vs music packaged with a million dollars worth of engineering behind it. As a result they hold no special appreciation for the incredibly talented busking musician.
@Pauly Walnutz man I feel this comment ..... music is soul soothing and these people seem so sad in their everyday lives even if you stop for two minutes to show support its better than walking on by....this man deserves better 🙏
you don't have to stop to notice it. You can still walk and listen
@@samualwhittemore228 He's busking, they aren't his audience, they are pedestrians. It's not about not understanding the difference between hearing someone "LIVE" vs "music packaged with a million dollars worth of engineering behind it". They just don't give a shit because why should they? Why should they stop just because somebody is playing music in front of them? Doesn't matter how skilled this guy is, these people aren't there to listen to him playing so you shouldn't expect them to stop even if they like what they hear.
People have shit to do, and like you said, we hear great music all the time. So why should they care that somebody is playing it live? If we stopped for every talented thing we hear or see, we'd never get anything done.
Thanks for playing Gary Moore...
A toast to Gary moore. Real real blues just a fantastic and beautiful painful expression. There is nothing else like it. I love so much music but i really really have a love for the blues i cannot express in words!🎸💖
That music takes away the pain of life
Yeah.....and this is one heck of a version!
Rhonna may I suggest you check out Taj Farrant. He is fantastic and is 11 years old and has only been playing for a few years but I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. He happens to love Gary Moore.
@@extraSNUFFY i will deffinately check it out when i get back from the store! Thank you for the information.
@Pauly Walnutz you are so right. Enjoying the blues( and even in my own struggles accepting),is a testimant to our strength and endurance as humans, and something that we can all probably relate to each other about ( our struggles can feel similar even as being different). I just really love the blues music if you can find/make joy from pain then i think you may have the key to door that Jesus knocks at.
People just walk by like it's just another day. When I see someone playing music this good I can't help but stop and appreciate the talent.
Down in the French Quarter in New Orleans I came upon a band so mesmerizing I sat and listened until they packed up to leave. Purchased a copy of each of their cd's then I reached out to them and hired them to play
at a big yearly celebration at my house. They stayed after the show, had dinner, got drunk and played Lazer tag with us all over my property at midnight. Was a great time.
Somewhere, Gary smiles
I'm in awe. You play that song like the sun spills it's beams in the morning on a cloud free day 🥰
If this doesn't bring a tear to the eye, check for a pulse!
You have a God given gift. That was beautiful. I shall listen to it again now. Thank you!
And a lot of practice.
@@djohn029 -Never reached any where near Robin's Gifted talent. I 'practiced' on several gtrs over the years, often til my fingers were bloody. Very obviously lack of 'Gift'.. humbly, Admittedly so ']
Just found this channel ive been listening for an hour and a half now. I live alone ,this has soothed my inner ear im 68 years old a Woodstock veteran Rush fan love this guy awesomeness.
Utter bliss !!! Love it. I’m surprised a man of your talent is having such a tough time making a buck. And. I was stunned to find people give you thumbs down on CZcams. Heartless wanna he’s who have no idea what effort it takes to become so good. We see you, and appreciate it.
Much appreciated!
Who is this Tremendously Talented guitar man? I would quite possibly fly in to hear him play.
I don't know why this beautiful thing is illegal. I'd LOVE to sit & listen to this ANYTIME!! Whether with coffee in the am or with wine in the pm. What a gift you have given us all. Thank you Sir.
Unbelievable. Respect to you and your art. 🙏🏼
The big red sunset in blue skies, and some rain, beautiful.
Lights in the playing fields and kids training down in the park.
I am so grateful for the help they all gave me and their friendship.
At that last cut I hope you had a chance to talk to that little boy in the 100% yellow shirt. He was hurting for the haunting beauty of your music and you captured his heart and he will never be the same! When I saw him cry and put his head down, I knew he was one of "us"!!!!!!
I bin hypnotized! I wonder if the folks walking by think he's just playing a recording and pretending to play the guitar...
Simply bloody fabulous
👍🇦🇺🤩
Another great performance. Had me in tears for a while.
thanks. then you are truly in the zone.
@@shatnershairpiece me too
It's contagious.
That was AWESOME. My hair stood on end on my arms. Wowzaa! 🖖🏽🤟🏽
It 🤯 how the majority of folks just walk on by. They need appointments to see an Audiologist. 👂
lol ! I agree its amazing how clueless those passers-by are at this man's talent!
The Zombie Apocalypses has already begun; Witness Exhibit A; the Undead shuffling past virtuoso Robin's rendition of Gary Moore's ethereal "Still Got the Blues" !
The spirit of Gary Moore lives on in you. As long as you live, he will never die. Thank you.
I love Gary❤️Always plays with soul and heart. He was amazing and always will❤️.Great job sir👌👌👌you are amazing player I would stop close my eyes and listen 👍thank You
Thank you very much!
Magnificently, etherically beautiful!!!! I could listen to this ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT. JUST PERFECTION.
You're one very talented guitar player 👍
Thank you very much!
Just fantastic. I hadnt listened to Gary in such a long time.
Buskarific, wonder if Gilmour hustled the same spot 55 yrs ago,. Great cover of one of the greatest blues rockers. Keep it up man. The Thin Lizzy work was groundbreaking, Gary Moore, so much more talent than he get's recognized for...but I guess you can relate.
If I go to Vancouver, I'm going to sit down in a camp chair and just enjoy this wonderful music.
I know this song like no other. The first take was music to my ears. Well done son.
Wow.... Excellent playing. A fitting tribute to one of a kind Mr Gary Moore
How about just one person stop and listen, my gosh the guy is excellent!
Thank you kindly!
Top drawer!! Wi love from Bonnie Scotland Xx
Gary Moore was a real gem of a player. Great sound and style. I'm the same way when I learn a song, I do my own solos, you make it your own style. When people say "Hey, your playing the solo wrong" I just reply, "Hey, then go home a listen to the cd" Great playing, always a pleasure to hear you.
Could just loop this all day long - absolute masterpiece...
thanks if you enjoyed it please check my links for support as I get nothing from CZcams.
Gary would have been pleased with that, he used to drink in a tiny little pub here in Hove/Brighton, The Neptune, a proper old school pub, and Dave Gilmour lives about 2 mins away from it, a famous Brighton guitarists venue.
Just WOW! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧xx
Although I'm not usually a fan of anyone else but the original player because most players seem to muddy it up with their "own" style, you sir have kept it within the original boundaries. My hat's off to you ! Can't believe Gary has been gone 10yrs already. This was my favorite from him. Watching him play it you knew he felt every chord and stroke of the pick. EXCELLENT JOB MY MAN!!
My favorite song 🎧 🎸💙 , great 👍🏻 tribute to the great Gary Moore. 🙌🕊🌈💕
Gary was my hero also and miss him so much everyday. Thank you for the awesome piece of memory!!!
Such a shock on hearing/reading about the passing of a true great British blues/rock guitarist.
I believe he was on holiday in Spain, when he succumbed to a massive heart attack. RIP : G.M.
Such emotion it makes me cry. Gary Moore is in you, he's still alive.
it’s a nice complement thank you but I would prefer to think of it that I am alive in me. i’m not channelling anybody except myself. Gary his his personality and I have mine.
Fabulous, been listening to this all day. Thanks for this light in bleak times. Sent you some money. The passers-by seem to have cotton wool in their ears.
Much appreciated!
Well Gary is up there on pearl white guitar with Philip P Lynott 😊 on bass , two greats of their time .
I don’t get the indifference to this guy’s playing. Stop and listen folks!!! This guy is damn good!!!
EXACTLY!! I don't get it, either!
Come to Australia, stay at my joint .. Your welcome my friend.. Love the music .. Dont ever stop...
Hi Ian, that's my fear that he will stop. He's just amazing and there's nothing 'busker' about him. He needs signing up and to record his music.
@@cherbrowne1637 Hi my friend.Your absolutely right,, enjoy and nice having a chat,, all the best,, Ian🙏❤️⚓️🌹
@@cherbrowne1637 ABSOLUTELY!!!! I keep asking myself: WHY is this man not playing professionally????
Those kids are definitely getting guitars soon 😅 so cool to see.
Your Parker Fly is soaring!!! That tone is unbelievable!!! Playing Gary Moore is no easy feat!!! You sound fantastic.... Don't be disheartened by those asshats....The city of Vancouver needs to put you on the payroll... They don't know what they've got!!! Keep on rockin'!!!😎🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This man plays with such intensity and emotion he scares people off. Don't get too close, dangerous .
Now thats what you call DEDICATION....Respect from Garys home soil ,IRELAND....SLAINTE.
it is a pleasure to hear great music in the hands of a master
Excellent very well done, good job.
Superb! Thank you so much for this moment of pure happiness :-)
Sublime music Robin🌀
It takes me back. I saw Gary Moore (Old Scarface) when he was with Thin Lizzy.
Around the time Parisian Walkways was out. It’s hard to remember dates now days. Getting old. Sorry, am old😱.
I saw Lizzy 5 times throughout their existence & different lineups.
Usually at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.
My favourite band of the time.
3 frontmen and a drummer. Great show.
Robin, I really appreciate your playing. Absolutely brilliant. It’s great too that it’s all the same music I grew up on.
I understand the adverse circumstances that you’re up against whilst playing too.
I’ll tip from afar when I can. Times is tough. As you know. I do spread the word of your gift.
May the Force
be with you.🌀

I’m jealous, I never say lizzy or Gary play. thanks for the story.
@@shatnershairpiece
I forgot to mention. I saw Eric Bell playing around 1980 (Eric Bell Band) in an East London Pub too. (Founder member of Tin Lizzy) He was on Vagabonds of the Western World. (Great LP)
Maybe you can do a version of ‘The Rocker’ from this LP.? Plenty of Wah-Wah.
So, to trawl my memory😱 5 Lizzy gigs. Band regulars Phil Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham,... along with
Brian Robertson twice, Gary Moore, Snowy White (more laid back), John Sykes (who had left Tigers of Pantang) to join the big boys. Alas, he did one album with Lizzy then Phil Lynott died. Sadly.
Maybe my Irish roots drew me to them? Irish dad. I’m what Irish folk would call a ‘Plastic Paddy’....☘️
Meaning, not a real paddy. It’s the humour 🤪
I live near Epping Forest. Which is N.E. of London.
Be Happy🐝😀
Live long and Prosper🖖

Such a wonderful rendition of a REAL classic blues song . You took me back to the place in my heart that Mr Gary Moore used to take me to. You certainly are a very talented guitar man . Sad to see so many walk by without feeling your music . Love your stuff my friend . PLEASE keep it coming. Thanks from Perth , Western Australia .
My mom loved Gary Moore and this is so nostalgic for me since her passing. I love the way your influence on it sounds! Absolutely immaculate and beautiful playing! I just turned 36 and I still got the blues.

Wow , electrifying . I love that song ! If I still had hair it would be an afro from the current .
Gary is smiling down on you, for sure....
Absolutely flawless play. Masterful shredding. Gary Moore would be proud!
You can Know the song , you can play the right chords but if feeling is not passed from the heart through the fingers then it is just a tune....this is more than a tune it is pure human emotion.
It’s a Moore tune
Those two young men at the 16:05 mark were in awe! You may have started a spark that will last a lifetime! Well done sir!
You definitely have a fan sir.. 🇬🇧
Gary Moore would be proud of you. 👏
That was flawless and beautiful 😍

Yes, love Gary Moore! Thanks for this!!
Garry is hopefully tuned in from his rightfull place in the realms of the muse in delightfull approval of your beautiful tribute ..par excellence mate..!
Played with heart and soul, rhythm and blues, intensity and subtlety... what a great tribute
Love the sustain...how do you get that sound? Beautiful playing!
One pedal mostly. Zen drive and then a bit of wah. The guitar is also a beast.
These people couldn't even take the time to watch you as you Grace them with this beautiful piece of art that you have in your hand they're all going nowhere fast
You sir, are a brilliant guitarist, and an amazing man. Roy Buchannan is smiling down from heaven, beside Gary Moore. Looks like the did Messiah come again.

I am in love with your playing of this song as tangibly as any man I've ever loved!!! It digs deep into my very soul!
Will we ever see a “Robin Spanell Rig Rundown” video? You know, the ubiquitous videos where a guitarist or tech shows and discusses the guitar collection, strings of choice, pedals, amps used, etc.
I for one would find that interesting.
well, I guess if people wanted to see it I could do it.
