DIY Cyberdeck - How it started vs how its going

  • I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to editing, so give me time. That will come.
    Wanted to start the channel off by showing how this project started and where it is at now. I will be creating more content to go over the cyberdeck in more detail. The hardware, software, and why I went with what I did. I'll be happy to do content to address any specific questions or requests too. Just let me know.

      Its not built into the system at all. There are some that do it, but I use the radio separately.

      @@DNETREAPER its built into the power bank that I use. these solar panels aren't great, and charge VERY slowly compared to a dedicated solar panel

      You can absolutely implement your UV-5R with software-to-radio equipment to transfer data without internet

      Typically it does. I upgraded to a Ailunce HD1 after trying out a couple Baofengs.

      @@not_that_jon_guy does the ailunce do digital? I've just ordered a sdr dongle for my laptop, that thing is supposed to be pretty awesome as a scanner.

      Yeah, the HD1 is a digital DMR radio. I run the RTL-SDR in this cyberdeck for the scanner.

    what all the rpi cyberdecks like these need is a wired keyboard of the same size. unfortunately there are not many options. the 2.4ghz dongle keystrokes can be intercepted wirelessly. using bluetooth, which has better security, does not help when the rpi has to first boot to the desktop... that is one area that needs improvement. either i have to stick a large wired keyboard to login or have it log in without a password.

      believe me when i tell you that frustration is shared. i can't stand having wireless keyboard/mouse.

      This explains my struggle perfectly, I’ve been using a wired key board to boot before switching to Bluetooth. Pain in the but really😅

      right now, it has a wide number of uses. Radio scanning when bored, or can be used to identify new freqs being used so you can connect with new people/groups.
      the knowledge base is massive, and can be used for emergency situations having access to tons of 1st responder medical docs, or general medicine.
      the tin foil hat "end of times" situation of having to essential rebuild society, theres tons of info for engineering things, farming, survival, basically you name it, and i have several guides on it.

      ​@@zoro-i8umostly. There's a size limit on discord so not everything, but it's all 100% free to get online. I'm working with a friend to get our GitHub fully populated with everything we've been working on. There's been A LOT of changes since this video. GitHub will be posted soon. I'll let you know

    Is that a Wi-Fi powered by solar? I’m currently about to get a rpi 4 my first one any ideas or what to do when I get it? I’m still in my learning phases.

      I would make sure to get the 8GB ram version just to make sure you have no issues with anything you end up doing with it.
      The battery pack I use does have solar on it so it can recharge that way. The solar panel has been kinda janky though. Charges very slowly.
      There's lots of cool idea videos around CZcams for projects with a Pi. I would check those out for some ideas.

      @@not_that_jon_guy thanks appreciate it, unfortunately in Philippines 🇵🇭 we have little access to most of the hardware etc but I ended up getting my hands on a rpi 4 4gb with a cooling fan costs me at 6,000 Philippines pesos not sure how much in your country by they make it more expensive here. Maybe one day I’ll

      I designed the 3D printed display bezel. I have redesigned it a few times while adding different types of hardware to the system. Ive been meaning to do an updated video to show it is today.

    Is that a ROADOM screen? Where did you find the print file for the screen mount?

      Hey, this is the Norsmic Pi touchscreen. As for the bezel, this is my own design that I made.
      I haven't posted it anywhere simply because I'm not "happy" with it yet. If you have discord, I'd be happy to send you the latest version that I have along with the build list.

      Haha. Shockingly it's not as bad as you would think. Doesn't compare to the extendable Comet antenna, but Diamond are pretty decent. It's more useful on a handheld than this setup for sure.

    What’s with everyone using the bottom for the screen? I’m planning mine out and it seems like I’ll fit the screen and everything but the battery up there and can use the base for the keyboard and storage for the batteries/cables

      Depends on the setup really. I have a Pi hat cooler and SDR hardware to cram behind the display

      @@not_that_jon_guy i figured it would be easier to just run the cables up. Might need to rethink how many cables I’m going to end up with. Edit: Should probably add just added the pi and found out it doesn’t fit there for me.

      It's a TIGHT fit for sure. With the hardware I have, and all the cables there would have been zero shot at me getting mine to fit.

      genuinely anything you want. can bring it with you pretty much anywhere for maps/gps nav if youre out camping or can setup a mobile listening post if youre out goonin with the bois. thats whats cool about these, you can tailor it to be for any purpose you see fit. right now, mine is actually setup as a Retro Arcade with games from OG nintento, gameboy, N64, PS1

      You mean the case? You can google "rugged case for equipment" and you'll get tons of results. They're used for firearms, camera equipement, drones, etc.

      in the sense of it being a computer, not much. the only real difference is that i built this, and 3D printed the bezel for it to work with the hardware that I picked.

      Yeah, this isn't the Official Pi screen though. I am finding lots of dudes get a fair bit of EMI due to the digitizer on the touchscreens when using SDR.

      it's just a mini Bluetooth keyboard/touchpad from amazon. these work really well. worth checking into.

      not realistically. a boafeng is so underpowered, and only broadcasts on a single frequency.
