Never expected for the largest Chuck E. Cheese to have no animatronics, insane how one of the most memorable attractions of the company is missing in the largest store.
At least the security guards don't need to worry about them at night, not to mention if they even have security guards at night.

Yes it was quite a different beast back then. People were in costume and the animatronics were in every store. Over time though many kids got scared of them. That combined with the upkeep and the fact that many employees would not apply for the job of giant character in a suit led to all the Chyckie cheeses being taken out. This also sparked a rebranding/redesign of Chucke himself into the much smaller early teenage looking CGI rat. A few stores had a animatronic of that version of Chucke behind a plate glass design but even that didn’t last long. I do miss those old days. In fact, many of the locations around the US have closed down. This location is probably one of the few remaining period.

San Jose native. I spent my childhood here in the 80s. Some of my absolute best childhood memories are at this location. I still went pretty regularly for the games until they remodeled it. I miss the old one with the animatronics and everything, even though as a kid the animated taxidermy on the wall gave me the creeps (still does.) This place was _AWESOME._ The first floor was all the ticket games and rides. The second floor was a whole 'nother classic arcade! You essentially got two different arcades under one building. It was insane. And boy oh boy was I disappointed when I went to a different Chuck E. Cheese's. They were downright pitiful in comparison.
This one had a great redemption area, too. They had a large display of every rainbow of flavor of candy canes. They were only 1 ticket if you got just one. So if you didn't have enough tickets for anything, you could always get a candy cane. They also had a really cool automated balloon machine. One of the few things there that took quarters instead of tokens.
We had two rumors as kids: one was the classic "kid died in the ball pit," the other was that a kid died in Mr. Munch's under the animatronic area. I wonder if it had anything to do with the other rumor about a kid dying on the 3rd floor? All I know is that 7-year-old me was too scared to go into Mr. Munch's.
This location used to have a sort of secret area. Just after the row of Bowlarama, they had a really narrow staircase; it was a tight fit to have more than one person through at the same time. At the top of the stares was a walled off eating area with two Portrait animatronics on either end, and a smattering of tables. My folks would make a b-line for this area because there was no foot traffic from anyone else, so it was nice and (relatively) quiet. You also got your own little show. The two characters would occasionally talk to each other, or serenade each other with songs. I think it was Pasquale and Helen, but I don't quite remember. In hindsight, I wonder if it was a private party area that just happened to not be used when we went there.
When I went back there a few years ago, the secret staircase had been closed off. However, when I went there last year (I was morbidly curious to try out their new pizza) I was happy to see the staircase was back. It's a bit wider, and they took one of the walls down so it now joined up with the arcade.

I enjoyed seeing some of that 3rd floor history, because most of the modern Chuck E. Cheeses I've seen just make me sad. I have such fond nostalgia for the 80s version. My single (at the time) mom worked at ours and I spent many hours there basically having free run of the place. I ate my dinners there, always had pockets full of tokens I didn't have to pay for thanks to the awesome managers, I used my game tickets to buy packs of baseball cards, and i even got to do a "junior" version of one of the costumed characters for an event once. It was a magical time, and an amazing escape from the realities my family's economic status at the time.

There’s an obscure animatronic The concept was based on the Awesome Adventure Machine, a device that was used in showtapes from 1996-1997. The stage featured a single Chuck E. Cheese animatronic at center stage, with a large monitor on each side. The setup also utilized special showtapes that used different audio tracks to make use of the stage's unique features. The footage used in the showtapes made use of articulated costumes with animatronic mouths and eyes, which were introduced in the August 1996 show, which also introduced the AAM itself. From a technical standpoint, the show operated using laserdiscs, with sound provided by a Dolby integrated seven-channel surround sound system. The video monitors were rear-projection.[1]
In late 1997 - early 1998, the Awesome Adventure Machine was replaced with a Studio C Alpha at Montfort Drive[2], and then they relocated with a Studio C Beta in 2001, the relocated location tested the Star Stage in 2010, and then was later replaced with a Circles of Light stage in 2012 and months later the animatronic was removed.

I grew up in San Jose. I had one birthday at that Chuck E Cheese, either in 81, or 82. Some time around there. I actually remember when it was a toy store before that. And the 3 giant solders. I only remember going in it once before the toy store closed. It was pretty bare towards the end, but I do remember they had giant slides and swing sets outside the building. It's kinda sad to see the modern version of the place. Last time I went there, they still had that glorious carpet all throughout the building. The décor was very dark back then. Which I loved. It was like a lounge for kids. Mood lighting. wooden booths and seating. Dark walls and carpet. I remember how wonderful that animatronic stage was. And right in front, they had stool seating surrounding the whole stage that would go up and down like a ride, during the show. Then there were fun kiddie rides in the game area, and one thing I really loved was a tiny booth, like a photobooth you could sit in, and watch like a 1min cartoon clip, Woody Woodpecker, I believe. Like a tiny private movie theater for kids. I honestly think it was a much more magical feeling back then. I actually think today's kids would've gotten a kick out of seeing how things were rather than the whole light modern updates to the place. Oh well...time marches on.

Holy crap! It's still there?!?!?! I haven't been there since I was a kid! I went to it when it was still a toy store. We moved in 1980, elsewhere so I don't think I ever went when it became Chuck E Cheese. But, there were some where we moved to.
I loved the original look of Chuck E Cheese; the auditorium where animatronic characters hung out the rafters singing old tunes, the individual rooms themed with one animatronic character performing, and the dark arcade themed like a forest.

Being one of the biggest locations in the world and having the most animatronic characters at this location it was the stupidest thing they could have done if they were smart they would have kept the complete main stage of course with updates and kept at least one single animatronic meaning the King on the second floor to entertain the guest that it would be the biggest location with its original animatronics it would be the go-to location just based off of that

I appreciate your Blockbuster glasses!! A San Jose native here. I literally just came here this Thanksgiving weekend. Haven't between here in almost 9 years. They did a major makeover, but I miss a lot of things they changed. I'm so sad to hear that they'll get rid of the stairs!! The animatronics were still up last time I came here. They did shows, but the new screens cater to today's kids. There was more art work all over the place before: above the prizes & food kiosks, above the stairs... & now it's covered up. The old Chuck E. drawing looked better than the new one I think. The prizes when I was a kid included a lot of Chuck E. Cheese merch, which you don't see anymore. I personally liked the old golden tokens & paper tickets too. I think there used to be other things on display in the giant outside windows many years ago too.

I lived just on the other side of the freeway so it was very close to us. I didn't understand that this location was special and didn't understand why the other locations like Kooser Rd were so small. I spent so much time in the ball pit here. Grew up in SJ and went to this spot often. I remember the smell of cheese and sauce when you walked in, the front stage area was sunken and had walls around the area. Huge ball pit to your left and I would climb up the 2nd floor stairs to see the "secret room" which was a non operational King. The skee ball is pretty much in the same spot as it was and right next to it was the barbies on jet skis that you had to aim the water gun to win 😆 so many memories there from my childhood. After reading a comment that it opened in December of ‘81, I now think it was August of ‘82 that I went there for my birthday. Because I lived in the East Foothills when I was 10. And I distinctly remember living at the Capitol and Monterey house when I went for my birthday. Family moved the the McKee and Alum Rock Area in February of ‘83 when I was 7. This was my childhood store!!! I've always wanted to know what was up on the 3rd floor when I was younger, IIRC the staircase was just out there in the open on the 2nd floor near Madam Oink was. I believe Studio C was removed in late 2018 - mid-2019? the last time I went was mid-2020 and they just got the circles of the light stage with no dance floor yet, weirdly it also looks like they took out the Chuck Cyberamic from the left display window at the entrance. I really wish I still lived in California so I could go back to this location!
Despite this being a prime location, ironically I preferred going to the kooser location instead to see the entire band lmao

This was the chuck e cheese I grew up going to! It was like going to Disneyland whenever we came. I didn't know it was the biggest. All the other Chuck E. Cheeses I went to sucked and were tiny compared to this one so it all makes sense now :D All that upstairs carpet I remember was everywhere downstairs too. I remember The King, The Beagles, that Aretha Franklin-type one, and all the other animatronics, walking up those multi-section stairs, and playing and beating Outrun, T2: Judgment Day, X-Men, and Turtles in Time there. There was always this shady older boy that would sometimes wait at the token machine and whenever we went to exchange, he would offer $1.50 worth of tokens for my dollar instead of putting it in the machine. He must have had the hook-up somehow :P That whole open area with the tables used to be it's own big separate "room/hall" and you had to walk through black doors to go into and once you walked in and saw the stage with the whole gang in their own giant (for me at the time at least) Hollywood Squares-ish cubbies, it was a sight to behold. They would sometimes play WWF Superstars on the big screens on Saturdays for some reason too haha. The ball pits and obstacle course seemed to go through the whole Chuck E Cheese building and I would get lost in it it was so big. It's all gone now I see. Damn I miss it , I should go back one of these days when i'm back in San Jose...

This is so interesting! In South Jersey (Deptford to be exact) we still have the whole band animatronics! I don’t remember the names, but for anyone curious, I’ll describe them the best I can:
    • There’s a human man with a mustache and a chef hat on the drums.
    • A cowboy dog playing guitar
    • A purple monster thing playing the keyboard
    • A girl duck that sings
And of course, the man himself, Chuck E Cheese. I go by it when I’m the in the area from time to time just to marvel at the fact that they’re still there. Pretty cool!
EDIT: I think the purple monster’s name is munch? I’m not familiar with the names, sorry!
