Let's talk again in 15 years when these Toyotas are still on the road where Jeeps will be in a junk yard getting parts pulled off it in effort to keep other Jeeps on the verge of being in that same yard.

The trails they took those trucks on are laughably easy (more like forest roads than actual trails). Both those trucks would CRUSH much harder trails. Back when my Taco was stock I regularly took it over stuff that was 100x more technical than the stuff in this vid. And THEN I got a lift, big tires, trail armor, and a front air locker. I have yet to find an obstacle on a trail anywhere near where I live that I can't get my truck past. I have no idea why people are so hot for a Tacoma redesign -- if it aint broke, why bother fixing it.

I agree. They should put the 4.0 v6 they have for the Tundra into the Tacoma lineup. I've never had any issues with my '10 Tacoma 4x4 DC TRD Sport..nor my '08 5.7 SR5 Tundra (387k miles), just think they should drop the 236hp/265lb V6, and put the Tundra V6 motor in it..and make it a 6 speed as well

Justin Smith very true..but the extra horses and torque from the Tundra v6 would put it on par with a stock v6 Taco with a TRD Supercharger installed. Buddy has the TRD supercharger in his taco, same model as mine (DC longbed 4x4) and its fun as hell to drive offroad or on the highway

The Tacoma has been way over due for that redesign, but at the same time it has withstood the test of time, in that it's still a beefy looking and performing truck. Many of them still sell way more than any other mid-size truck. And the Toyota lettering stamped on the front grill gives it that classic Toyota pickup vibe. No other Japanese company comes close to Toyota's legendary off road prowess.

I agree. I have 2010 and really other than a new hood and a few things on the dash..exact same as mine. In 09 they changed taillights. When a true redesign comes out I will probably get it. Mine is paid for so I am in no hurry.

  • @111Sylvester
    @111Sylvester Před 10 lety

I had an old 4runner and the thing I liked the most about it was the manual gearbox with the hi-low gearbox. Toyota manual gearboxes are superb, comparable to a Getrag box. It could tow like a dream and, reversing,it could push a trailer up a slope that would defeat more powerful trucks with only one reverse gear.
I also hate the grill (or lack of one). Most married guys know what a yeast infection looks like, and today it looks like the front end of a 4Runner.
My old Toyota rusted away long before the drivetrain wore out, so I would never buy another one, despite fond memories.

I have had my Tacoma in many trails up in the NE where a Raptor will not fit, different style trucks. I know of multiple Tacoma's with over 250k miles and still going strong, proves Toyota reliability. If you don't have the need to tow over 7k pounds, want a easier truck to park and use in tighter areas, great off pavement capabilities, and OK mpgs the Taco is a great truck. Toyota has been making trucks for quite a few years and many are going strong in the harshest environments on earth that alone is a testament to the toughness and reliability. Pretty sure you won't see a ford truck in the deserts of Australia but a Land Rover or Toyota they are everywhere.

Do you think a jeep grand Cherokee can do what these vehicles just did?
I had 2005 when it first came out and it wasn't off road capable at all. Clearance was to low and shocks were too soft. On road it was super fast and handled pretty good with V8 Hemi.
I trade it in for huge lost as I waa very unhappy with it.
The newer jeep grand Cherokee has ability to adjust height on fly. Whether or not that's enough, don't know.

Sorry for the late reply. For some reason never saw your post.
I don't know about Jeep Grand Cherokee's today; however, I don't know if I'd ever buy one again.
I got an exceptional deal when I purchased mine back in 2005. It was fully loaded and I added lots of creature comforts and took incredibly good care of it. Never took it off road because it didn't seem like it could handle it because it could barely handle simple stuff.
What I liked about it, was it was very, very fast for a heavy vehicle and was all well drive and had skid plates that protected it underneath and lots of technology gadgets built in...
But it simply was not rugged as advertised not to mention it hand numerous quality issues...
I paid in all with all enhancements, aftermarket updates, full warranties, full service maintenance packages, etc... $53 to $55...
I sold in just shy of five years for $12 as I simply did not want it any more because of the hassles...
It was in excellent condition, no dents, scratches, etc... I took excellent care of it and was very careful where I parked it so as not to get dings from adjacent cars...
It was waxed regularly, engine compartment cleaned...
It was a blast when first got it because no one could believe a four wheel Jeep was that fast from take off and top in.
The 5.7 Hemi or whatever it was at that time was truly amazing...
Again, many, if not most, of the Jeep Grand Cherokee owners I knew and or talked with would not buy again...
The Wranglers seem to be more reliable and durable...
For an SUV I would definitely get something else other than a Cherokee, unless the dealership gave me absolute best deal and all the reviews were prestine.

I did a lot of research into body on frame suv's that was 4x4 and was actually off road worthy. I ended up purchasing a Nissan Xterra 4x4 Off Road, (known as Pro4X now) in 6spd MT. The 4Runner did not even offer a MT and was 15k more then the Xterra. After a few years of off roading and trips to the snow, I know that I made the right decision. My X has not had any problems (mechanically) at avg 18-20mpg combined, I have 56k on my X now and have been looking at a replacement but unfortunately, these body on frame SUV's are getting more and more rare. and if you want it in MT, forget it. Maybe a Tacoma 4dr. with MT? but the long wheel base makes it not as maneuverable or off road friendly. IDK if anyone else agrees but I am hoping for a refresh of the Xterra in diesel.

That's the problem with the Nissan..... in 56k miles you're looking for a new car. Toyotas you can get 200k easily with little to no maintenance.

4runner seems like an ok buy. But the tacoma....why not just get a full sized truck for the money? Someone please explain why you would buy a tacoma over a tundra or even a silverado 1500.

The design on Tacoma is perfect. They make a lot of salsa cause the look is similar.. look at Subaru Impreza.. one of the best selling cars they got and it’s because the looks weren’t overly changed.. look at the new camaro and you’ll see why keeping a similar style works for sales.

I get it. 95% of people who purchase a 4WD vehicle never take it off road. That's why so many manufacturers have gone to unibody platforms. That being said, Toyota, PLEASE offer a solid front axle option on the pickups and 4Runners. IFS is a joke unless you are desert racing. And why aren't these vehicles being tested on trails where 4WD would actually be used? I could take my 2WD Toyota pickup over these trails without any issues. When it comes to true off road use, I'll take my 85 4Runner any day over these soccer mom vehicles.

Not sure where you live but I see more second gen 4runners, 96-01, here in WI than the same year Jeeps. You also have to take the number of them manufactured in consideration and I know for sure there were way more Jeeps produced then the 4runner. In my part of the country rust is the biggest factor on why I don't see a large number of Jeeps. This and besides the I-6 the rest of the vehicle was junk. The second gen 4runners were not know to be rust buckets and my old 99 4runner had not one rust spot even with 270k and spending it's entire life in WI. It was so clean and well taken care of which is the reason the Toyota dealer I bought my 2012 4runner at gave me $3900 for it as a trade in. You'll never get that amount for the same year Jeep. They don't hold their value as good a as Toyota. Jeeps rust pretty good here in the MW which is probably why I don't see many around. Don't get me wrong I actually like Jeeps well not all Jeeps. I like the CJ's the most out of all of them and built one for my uncle years back. I also like the SRT8 2014 Jeeps but that's about it. They make great off road rigs when built correctly and helpped us win WW2. Lol.

Lol, the full size guys with their fuel mileage is nothing but a ruse. Ever checked the resale value and cost of maintenance of a Chevy/Ford/whatever compared to a Tacoma? So would I want to save $1,500-2k in fuel cost in the next 5 years, or lose thousands more over that on my trade in? I figured the recession a few years ago made people a little more dollar conscious than this.

Which is better for off-road? Those two, the FJ Cruiser, or the Land Cruiser?

    • @gammaboxer9765
      @gammaboxer9765 Před 10 lety

Straight up off roading my bias opinion is FJ hands down. This opinion is based on ownership of Jeep YJ,TJ Grand Cherokee and 1/2 tonne truck (with 6" lift and 37" tires BF all terrain ta). I have a leveling kit and BFG all terrain ta on my 13 FJ and without a doubt it's an incredible off roader. It does have its drawbacks of course but its features more than make up for it. Locking rear diff, A-trac and crawl control make this thing fantastic. Clearly as an owner I'm biased but i really do think if a compact off roader is what you want it should be in your top 3 for sure. I'm in no way knocking Jeeps, land cruisers or 4runners but based on what i have owned and driven and what you are asking this is my favourite.

different markets. The 4runner is a big car on the outside (within a few inches and lbs of the 80 series cruiser) but its a great mid weight heavy tourer for much less and with less overhang. The 200 series cruiser is the best heavy tourer and will last the longest but its too much money, I would buy a 4runner unless you need the extra space and load capacity. Surprisingly the Taco doesn't have a lot more payload than the 4runner, but it can tow a lot more and its pretty solid off road so thats the route to go for if hauling.
