Hope this in depth testing video is helpful for anyone who is trying to choose between the Silver Black Velvet brushes and the more affordable Dainayw brushes. They look so similar, it was actually difficult trying to pick up the right brushes when testing them! P.S. I tried out the 'pro-video mode' on my phone and it seems to make everything much brighter and whiter but at the sacrifice of a bit of sharpness. Let me know what you think! :)
Omg THANK YOU i recently noticed that the ones I had for like two years were in fact not silver black velvet brushes! The whole time before I was like “wow these brushes suck! What a waste” 😭 I just bought a real set a few days ago and it should arrive soon. This time it’s the real deal. Also the dainayw are very much not pointy for me too especially the smaller two sizes. (*update*): I’m in love with them.
I have the set of Dainayw brushes and had a completely different experience. They all hold a great point- I could get a really thin solid line from all of them no problem and they all hold lots of water. I could do a line twice as long with no skipping at all. I would suggest contacting the seller as mine perform like a completely different brand 😯

@@WendyPaints I think they came from wish- they were a gift but we have trouble with Amazon and postage where I live so usually avoid it. It's good that they at least worked reasonably well, but I was a little sad you didn't get the same experience as me. I hope you can get it resolved 🤞🤞
Very helpful. The pointed tips are important to me, so you saved me ordering the wrong ones. I have one black velvet brush and love it. The Dainayw would be helpful for some things, if you didn't need the point.
l have two sets of the Dainayw brushes and have a completely different effect as regards ,very thin lines and holding water. Use them a great deal and very satisfy with them.
Van Gogh Prussian Blue is basically derived from Phthalo Blue, and it is a strong stainer. It is almost impossible to lift this paint (and Phthalo green) once you put on the paper, especially cold press since the paint has already diffused into paper fibers as you were painting. Use ultramarine or granular paint if you want to do lift test.

Silver black velvet brushes can be used for different sort of paintings as it has better pointed tip ❤️by the way this is one of the great comparison video 😍 ur way of explaining is far gud than others 😍😍

Thanks for the tip! Personally in my own work I do use a cheaper synthetic for lifting, but for the sake of this video I thought I might as well include the lifting test for completeness. Thank you for the tip though, very much appreciated! :)
For the lifting test... 1 Prussian blue is a staining color not a lifting color.. and 2 you shouldn't be lifting color with squirel brushes anyway you will ruin your brush

In regards to lifting with squirrel brushes, I think this comes down to personal preference. I have heard some people who don't use their squirrel brushes for lifting colour while on the other hand Jacksons Art has a blog post which actually recommends their squirrel brushes for lifting colour off the paper. I personally haven't experienced any damage to the brushes by lifting colour with these brushes (the SBV is half synthetic though), but then again I am conscious not to do this on the regular ;) I appreciate the note though, thank you

I initially also thought the same thing that perhaps they were the same but rebranded, so I had to do a detailed comparison of the two! 😉 I also own a few mop brushes from AliExpress, not specifically the ArtSecret brand but a similar brand and my experience so far is that they don't hold as much water, perhaps I should try another! How have your experiences been with them?
@@WendyPaints @@WendyPaints ArtSecret has so many series of brushes. i got 2 different series, 2 of the 65RPY mop brush of mix hair of squirrel and synthetic, and 2 of the 15RT round brush with synthetic taklon hair. i really love them as they were so cheap (got good deals, not more than USD4 each) yet they perform really well IMO n limited experience, as i only ever use nylon brushes previously. the 65RPY (mix of squirrel n synthetic hair) holding large amount of water and able to create thin lines, while the 15RT holding it shapes really well, the tip is always on point, and holding good amount of water for a synthetic brush.
@@ruffeyx I ordered an art secret size 10 and it feels cheap, it's not good, the bristles are bad quality, no point at all and the handle is kinda cheap. I got Dainayw after from Amazon and they're so much better. Buy Dainayw.
I was so disappointed with my Black Velvets when I got them. They have so much hype.. but they really are an inferior brush. First they are artificially carved to a point, a well made brush has the bristles laid in to create a point. Mine also shed terribly, and they have no spring at all.. if I lay down a stroke the bristles bend over and stay that way until I reshape them. A good brush may have more or less spring but at a minimum it should retain its shape so you can continue painting with it without having to deal with a flopped over brush on every stroke. I have many brushes of similar or less cost that are so much nicer, one of my favorites are the Velvetouch long rounds.
Thank you for sharing your insight, it's always great to hear from others as everyone has different experiences with art supplies. I do agree with the silver black velvet not having much spring, though since their bristles are half natural fibers, my expectation was that they would not have as much spring as a synthetic one would, hence was not as surprised with this characteristic of their bristles. I have not tried the Velvetouch rounds, are they by Princeton? I'm intrigued and would love to try them out sometime! @@jo-yy7ni same thing. If you make a stroke with the brush, the bristles go back to their original shape without you having to manually put them there. A brush with a lot will be stiffer, and retain a point unless you put quite a bit of pressure on it, better for details because you can do fine lines with it easily. A brush with less will spread out with less pressure, good for broad strokes, washes, etc. A brush that just flops is very frustrating to use, you are constantly having to "chase" the brush shape on every stroke.
Silver Black Velvet size 10 costs 40$ here..How long do these last? If I wash them properly every after use, can anybody make a guess how long these will last? I'll have to save to get it, so I want to know if this or go for a cheaper Da Vinci
They should last years if properly taken care off, however I think when it comes to actually painting with it you can get cheaper squirrel/synthetic mix for a similar result :)
They will last a long time but I agree that searching around to fine the best qualities to price point is important in chosing a brush. Unless you are going long stretches between paintings I wouldn't suggest "properly" washing them after every use. A good rinse should be sufficient after a painting and brushes only need to be washed with soap every few months if you are regularly using them. I find washing to be a little rough on brushes with the scrubbing and agitating to work the soap through, I wouldn't want to do that after every use.
Is it ok though, to just use water, when the Kolinsky do not come back to their true colour after painting? I just got my first 2 Raphael and a Da Vinci all Kolinsky brushes. Should I just use water after each painting,no matter if they stay red or whatever colour I used? please? @@ciannacoleman5125

With the real squirrel hair in the silver black velvet being softer, and more expensive, you might want to use a cheaper synthetic for any lifting.

@@WendyPaints Yes.. they are by Princeton. I have several real sable brushes and none of them "flop" like that.. but cheap squirrel hair does.

Silver brushes are made in srilanka. The other brand is made in china
