Guts has a bad day. For several years.
since day one… literally
“Guts’ and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Volume 75.”
@queertitan how old is he at current? I'm betting 30. That's 30 years.
@@TheAsylumCathe’s 23 which is actually worse, because that means it’s been real condensed.
There's no going back now, welcome aboard fellow struggler.
"I Read All Of Berserk in One Week."
You´re a freak.
Berserk is a five star course your suppose to space out to last weeks if not months. But someone decide it was a good decision to take it head on in a week, enjoy your emotional breakdown
The thing is, many people (myself included) got into Berserk by watching the 90s anime first then they moved to the manga when they realized the anime isn't getting any more seasons, so we got the best part of the early story served to us on a golden platter (pun intended), meaning the slow and slightly less interesting (compared to the Golden Age arc) first couple of volumes of the manga didn't bother any of us, in fact quite the opposite as we got to see how future Guts (continuing from the show) ended up, cause in the show we only got a short glimpse of future/flash-forward Guts then we immediately dive into the Golden Age arc which you could say is the HEART of the story, the start point of everything .. that might explain your apprehension to continue the manga since you didn't watch the 90s anime show like many people did.
My crew of voice actors and I actually adapted Berserk Lost Children arc into a motion comic movie
Extremely based.
It is sad that it will likely never be officialy adapted due to how dark it is but it is also one of Berserks best arcs.
@@giovannimorenohernandez4656 It could potentially get an adaptation, it's just still an on-going manga with 8 years to go
'Fun' Fact: I stopped reading Berserk after The Eclipse. Not because it was bad, one of the best manga I ever read imo, but the way the characters were brutally taken. Stopped reading for 4 years and when I returned, the dreaded Boat Arc was happening. Glad Kentaro-sama's friend is continuing his legacy. Rest in Paradise Kentaro Miura. 💛
I want Guts and Casca to be happy. They DESERVE it! (;~;)
After i finished the anime I heard about the dreaded boat arc so i decided to wait until the arc was over before starting the manga
And then the next thing i hear the author is died
So i binged it
All in one week without ending up in a mental institution after is quite a flex. Glad you enjoyed it!
"Mothafuckin Zodd!" 👏 👏 👏
I love when you say that on your videos
I thought there was some allusion to Rosine having been sexually abused by her father and she was playing it out with the converted elves. This also sort of mirrored Guts being sold to a merc by his adopted father for sex when he was a kid.
Rosine was actually a product of that action. The elves bit was to highlight that they were truly evil and not animals, like how Jill tried to convince herself. As that action is an act of true malice and sadism with no other purpose than to torture but physically and mentally except maybe personal pleasure wich adds to the evil. Lost Children is my favorite arc because of how...rough it gets. Hard to explain the specific brand of catharsis off hand.
@@TheAsylumCat Yeah, sort of hits home that a lot of times victims of sexual abuse end up growing into abusers.
Oh isn’t this the series where this cool guy called Griffith is Gut’s best friend?
😂
You have no idea how much I relate to this as someone who, just last month, also read Berserk in one singular week.
Definitely see what you mean regarding the big R question. There was definitely a point in the series where trolls came out and I rolled my eyes thinking "here we go again". These smaller instances where it's a bit less consequential that could have been dialed back a bit.
I can't get enough of this series.
Absolutely the best I've ever read.
Oh yeah, its Berserkin time-
Been reading it since the earlys 2000s and yknow, IM STILL WAITING. You will never know the boat struggle
Berserk in one week??
ohh boy....
Edit: i gotta call you out! 8:00 that not a random grape scene that one just forgets, that shit scared the girl and made her realize these are not wild creatures surviving, but cruel demons.
Also it was an illustration of how they thought 'adults' acted, highlighting the cruelty that the children had witnessed that drove them to be taken in by the 'fairies', and that made eternal childhood seem attractive.
Thank you! She missed those points of that.
It was one week, that's a lot of info to digest. Compare that to how most fans wait...what, half a year now? In between chapters. Pacing and having time to process can do alot. I try not to judge.
I had the same thought. She really focused most of her video on the rape scenes...
Still going through the delux, but man do I hate myself for not getting into it sooner. RIP the brilliant Miura-the man who combined Conan the Barbarian and Elric of Melnibone.
I’m glad I started reading it right after he’d passed purely because I don’t think I could’ve handled it if I found out about his death after I began reading it. Rather than an extreme sadness, I had a profound respect for his life’s work.
The title leaves me with one question: how? I crammed Timothy Zahn’s Conqueror’s Trilogy in a week and needed to take a break from reading.
Yes!, one of us, one of us, welcome to the world of Berserk Dannphan!, :D
Nope, the adult attack from lost children still disturbed me. I mean, it is not as disgusting or shocking as the first time I read. But still, they were kids that poisoned by demon
8:00 I feel like it was necessary. It shows that these children were in such a bad place in that village that there's no wonder they wanted to escape and "become elves". They are imitating what has been done to them while playing at war. That's why they call it "adult attack"
ADULT ATTACK!
I saw the rape scenes generally as just showing how brutal and violent the world is where it's routine. However, I do agree that fewer rape scenes is nicer because when they actually happen, they have more impact.
My favorite character is Farnese because of how amazingly useless she starts out.
11:00 The chapter with The Idea of Evil is no longer canon as Miura found it to be limiting the scope of the story. That said, it is still implied that SOMETHING greater than the God Hand does exist as stated in later chapters.
No, fewer rape scenes would’ve been bad. Kentaro was trying to show the depravity of humans in war and in desperation to escape the existentialism of living a meaningless life during medieval period. In real life the rape scenes would’ve been several times worse and there would’ve been hundreds of them the story.
@@zzodysseuszz What I meant is that after a certain point, the number of rapes goes down, making any future ones more impactful. I'm well aware that in that world, getting raped is just Tuesday.
@@zzodysseuszz exactly. this was a war torn world Berserk was set in and others conquering others, either by armies or by rape. its was never shown to be anything but be dehumanizing.
@@matty6878 100% agreed
well done Trish!
Berserk will forever be one of the greatest manga and story ever told.
Sadly I'm not so sure that the post-Miura will be... So far the stuff they have released feels very... off, especially the weird 180 shift in the way the kushans are portrayed.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Berserk is n.1 manga and dark fantasy story to me. I don't know any modern piece that can beat it.
About rape scenes: Miura might have overused this, but I can't say all of them were unnecessary. Maybe the presentation was too provoking. I felt that troll's cave was too much of it. I didn't like the trolls neither was scared of them. However, in lost children arc when kids-bugs were playing... I was shocked and disgusted. Actually, it was the moment I dropped the manga for a month or several weeks, because that was traumatizing to me. When kid yelled: "like adults do!" and r@ped another kid with the stinger I couldn't bare it... so f-ed up... still the scariest and ugliest part.
So, I guess this is controvertional. But I like it! Manga explores different parts of human nature and I'm glad that people appreciate its story and lore❤
If Berserk isn't the best then what is?
The adult atack has depper meaning; the childs where imitating the adults back on the Village. It represents how the bad actions of adults damage the children. These "atacks" in berserk overall are a reflection on reality, it happens a lot but for the most of the population is not a problem. These "normalization" is one of the depper meaning that berserk has, i dont know why people just dont get it.
I don't know if every rape has a "plot reason" but the kids raping each other while yelling "adult attack" adds a lot to a story that's about how tough children's life is (that's what those chapter were about...jill and puck and rosine kept mensioning that it sucks to be a kid). So you may missed the point there.
ps. We, berserk fans, remember all the rape scenes...
I think the first scene is very relevant especially since the children were expressing their trauma as what they thought adults did to each other because it was clearly being done to them, how else would the children know to "play adult" and literally kill each other through rape?
Now I'll be curious on your thoughts on Vegabound, as thats a really amazing series too
are you okay ?
Been on the fence about reading this, but I think I'll give it a crack. Thanks. 😁
"Gooble Gobble! Gooble Gobble! One of Us!"😁
One of us! One of us!
Definitely one of the easier manga to read in a week.
Welcome to the suffering! 🤣
I always follow you with pleasure and I'm glad you're passionate about the series, having said that I have to admit that my impressions of the work are diametrically opposed to yours: I love the dark, raw and bloody horror tone of the beginning and the angry avenging Gatsu, and I think the drift with the fantasy party is slow and bland 😅😅😅
actually about the Lost children Arc. I remember "all" abour it, it was trauma inducing,
I think that Miura understands the connection between sex and violence that exists in the human psyche and the demons and apostles prey on our most base fears and anxieties.
That is why there is so much sexual assault in Berserk. Miura may or may not have been working through issues on the page but he is also making a statement about how human beings are mostly self interested and subject to their own frustrations. Demons would most definitely exploit that and you can't tell that story without showing it.
It's about more than shock value. If you aren't thinking about these incidents when they occur and why they are distressing you, you aren't really contemplating what it is to be human.
It's also always portrayed as evil and rightfully so.
Like 30+ years of work and you can read it all in a week thats crazy. The art reminds me alot of Gustav Dores works, he drew works that were complex in detail in the forefront and foreground.
I can agree Black Swordsman arc is hard to get through. Guts is very not likeable until Golden Age starts really. I suppose that is the point of the story. To show that this isn't a traditional good vs evil story. The main guy is not a good person, he is on a revenge spree and he doesn't care who gets caught in the crossfire. He despises weakness and looks down on people who are "too weak to live". But then you get to Golden Age and you see why he is the way he is. Berserk is all about the long game.
I disagree on the Fairy Children take. That was absolutely needed. Not going too into spoilers, the fairies were not just children, these were children corrupted into thinking whatever evil they commit was just them playing around. These children wanted to get away from the Adults and it is almost comical that when they get the power and have no restraint, they also tend to be like the Adults they despised. I haven't really finished the manga. I am at the Millenium Falcon arc, so I can't say if all rape scenes are in service of the story, but from what I have read I haven't seen many rape scenes just for the sake of it. Maybe the horse scene(you know the one) was a bit fetishistic? Like I get the point, but it still feels like Doujin material. Rape is horrible, it is a gross violation of someone and I think Miura represents more accurately, the violence inflicted on someone from it. Rape in Berserk is leagues above most stories, because it shows the horrible consequences that arise from it. In fact, Sex in Berserk, in general is handled more maturely than people give it credit for. Like the scene in Golden Age with Guts and Casca is probably one of the best scenes when it comes to romance. It shows the softness of the moment, the passion, the vulnerability in a way that is so profound.
I think it is fair that you think Berserk is not the best, there have been a lot of manga that took that premise and ran with it and arguably did it better. But what is undeniable is the legacy that this story has built. Berserk's status as the GOAT is undeniable because the inspirations of the story still live on to this day. I find Berserk and Gut's story to be inspirational. It has changed how I view life for the better. One of the most memorable lines from Lost Children arc was right at the end of it, after the Fairy dies, the kid(I am not good with names lol) asks Guts if she can go with him because she just wants to get out of her town, Guts points out the demons constantly following his path and goes "There is no paradise. There is no magical place to run off to, that will make it all better. You have one life and you have to deal with the consequences of it. I chose my battlefield, go back to yours". While a hard pill to swallow, it is an important life lesson. To not bend to destiny, to look it straight in the eye and to fight until your dying breath. I think Berserk is a story that is especially needed for the modern generation, not because Kids are weak these days or some nonsense like that. Berserk is what I have heard been referred to as Hopedark, to see the ray of light in a world so dark and malevolent. It is all about hope and to fight on and that is a message that is sorely needed in the modern age.
Love the video and I also agree that not all rape scenes where necesary for the plot but the one you choose as an example was in my opinion relevant to the story because it is supposed to show Jill that even if she ran away from reality to become an elf the horrible things she has seen or experienced to certain degree, violence at the hands of her dad and sexual harrasment by the hands of her father's friends, will not stop happening and she might even come to enjoy doing them to others.
And also reflects the trauma Rosine has around her own birth as possibly being the result of her mother being raped after a battle.
It is hamfisted but definitely relevant to the plot and themes of the arc.
Hopefully this vid won't get struck. Most youtubers substitute *that* word by "grape".
Thanks for the review. Its nice to have another point of view on the work. Keep on it!
you should watch the anime series as well
Thanks for the non spoiler review! I myself havent read Berserk yet, but I think I'll give it a read sometime soon after seeing this. Also, after hearing you mention that Berserk isn't "the best manga of all time", I just became curious to know now; what in your opinion is the best manga(s) of all time?
I'm just impressed you got through it all in one week. Even if you just took the whole week off, that's still intense.
While I'm all in favor of the various fan made animated versions, I don't know how they're going to get around copyright issues, and even if they do they most certainly aren't going to be able to post unedited Berserk to CZcams, so I'm not sure what's going to happen with them.
Read Berserk in one week?
"You're going to be alright. You just stumbled over a stone in the road. It means nothing. Your goal lies far beyond this, doesn't it? I'm sure you'll overcome this. You'll walk again...soon."
Keep struggling.
After reading berserk all other manga kinda sucks
Rest well
One week? I'd ask Dann if she needs a hug but anyone reading Berserk in basically one sitting would be like guts himself, needing hugs but refusing them
Too much rape talk in this one though 😂 it's so much more than the rape scenes
The thing with the church though, the holy see, I don't think there is quite a good god. The first prophecy we hear from it describes Griffiths eclipse and return. They may just be the god hands useful idiots
Last thing though regular sized volumes or deluxe? I kind of feel like mozgus lugging the deluxe ones around... faith, conviction and a primary weapon all in one book!
3:24 For me, it was the complete opposite. I found Guts' character really intriguing in the first chapters.
I liked the Black Swordsman Arc so much, I was really put off by the fact that I had to read through around 100 chapters until I would get back to Guts killing demons. At the end, it was definitely worth it, but at the start, it almost made me drop the manga.
If not berserk then which series do you think is the best?
with your mention of gods in berserk, what is your opinion then on the unreleased chapter called "I want wings" and would you consider it canon to the story ?
ADULT ATTACK, baby stew, ahhh so many classic moments. i stopped reading with Miura passed. if he didn't pen it then i have no desire to read how it'll continue or end. i think it actually ended fine with griffith having the final words penned by the author himself.
as for any faults i've had with it, i thought it spent too long on getting Casca back. and any part where Guts was off on his own i thought took away from his character and how he really can't do it on his own, hence the small group he was always with.
What is your favorite Manga? Do you have a favorite Manga?
i'm sure its impossible to imagine for genz but there was a time when comics were about the visual medium first and foremost same with anime. that was a while ago though and now its all about everything else.
One of us one of us
Heh that Waldo comment made me remember finding Waldo in DanDaDan
Really enjoyed the manga, though it takes a while to find its stride. It's a dark and horrible setting like most of human history, and I don't think there's anything wrong in depicting that, whether it's "necessary" to the main story or not.
Impressive! I'm glad you liked it, and that you gave it fair critizism. 🤘
Berserk is the best manga ever, it’s my favourite story ever, I was blown away when I first read it.
Great video. I agree, the art is pretty awesome.
I don’t even understand why people say that the frape scenes are “unnecessary”. It’s a brutal world, if anything there would be more, as a world like this that would be absolutely rampant.
Honestly, people who say that have absolutely no idea how much worse it was in history. The past was fucking insanely depraved compared to even the most corrupt places today
@@zzodysseuszz Yes exactly, and the world of Berserk is far more brutal than any point in our history, so I absolutely hate that argument that it’s “unnecessary”, it’s extremely necessary if you want a world to feel real.
She is one of us now.
I asked you about it maybe 3 years on a stream you and Adam were doing. You didnt seem intrested. Glad you changed your mind
You poor thing. I would've told you not to, given that it still isn't finished yet. And that's *not* the kind of anime you want to have to reread. I just hope the new writers can lay it to rest with its dead creator soon. The story feels like it's run out of gas the way "Game of Thrones" did after consuming all the GRRM material it could.
"Berserk currently has 42 volume"
Dannphan: "I've read all of Berserk in a week"
Me, a slow reader: "aw, Witchcraft"
Lost Children Arc best arc
Dood why people onlyy talk about that new fan anime an no one speaks about the studio arche continuation of the 90's anime that alredy have a chapter realeze.
So you think that scene is forgetable? Hmmm..
Congrats on getting through Berserk and not needing heavy Bottle of Alcohol to take the edge off.
Absolutely based.
The thing with Guts and the demon at the start is not fan service, it’s a fresh writer’s homage to stuff he likes, namely Conan the Barbarian.
What, don’t believe me? Watch the film. In it, Conan consults a soothsayer to help him find the person who killed his father and destroyed his village. In the course of this, Conan and the soothsayer have sex, and she gets possessed by an evil spirit (if not the antagonist himself) and tries to attack Conan. He kicks her into the nearby fire, where she dies screaming.
It’s very easy to see the nods Miura had for his inspirations, especially if you like watching movies. Like a LOT of movies.
First, if you didn't find guts relatable in the first two volumes of berserk good. That means you're not insane. Second, why in God's name would you read it all that quickly? That is so much! Oh my God, are you okay?. I mean it is one of the best manga ever written. But dear God, don't read it that fast. That's got to be emotionally exhausting.
This video should be sponsored by BetterHelp.....
Fear of horses? Started weightlifting yet?
Hey Dannphan, do you think Griffith did nothing wrong?
Are... are you okay?
Now, go back and read it correctly in physical.
All Hail The Squib Nation!
Guts is all the trauma
Gorgeous
People can live without comic books, not a single page of them, not a single panel is ever necessary.
dannphan's inner monologue after reading all of Berserk in one week: czcams.com/video/f26KyGr6y8w/video.html
girl why would u do that. i mean, damn
I found your lengthy focus on the R scenes very... strange ngl.
I know in this day and age of ultra PC culture where sex has become way more taboo than beheading its hard to conceive the fact that R are just "something that happen to people in some situations", and showing it has the exact same purpose than showing someone getting assassinated, robed and killed, but that's literally just what it is and has as much to do with fanservice than gore would.
In a dark gritty fantasy, R is just a fact of life, just like bloody dismemberment, it doesn't need to be "necessary", it just is.
The fact that you spend half the video talking about it, but never mentioned, yaknow, the copious amount of gore and torture going on in that story is pretty telling to how twisted modern perception is.
As for the story and the shift in style... did you miss the fact that the whole story is about a dark, grounded medieval world that is suddenly turned into a high fantasy world by Griffith, this is why the tone of the story itself shift.
That video felt like a review of Game of Throne that spent half its run time complaining about the sex. Its.... odd.
Also 11:40 WHAT?
No. He didn't write the ending. The whole problem around his death (outside of the fact that he died too soon) is specifically that he never wrote down any plan for the story and the people that took up his work are only working off various conversations and "vib" they got from working with him for decades.
mad lass
You had to this to yourself.
Do you have a video or advice for beginner writers?
Sweet little Trish, this was a great freaking job. Honey, You've Grown.
In a week?
The hell wrong with you?
People are exaggerating the rape scenes. There’s really not all that many of them in total
Why.
Why did you decided to subject yourself to this?
Regardless, i commend both your ambition and insanity. Have an amazing day!
I stopped reading berserk over a decade ago. The only arc that i liked was the Golden Age. Honestly, it came across as though it was written by someone who only knew of European civilization through modern media, like Hollywood. So i got increasingly tired of the edgy kid nonsense and dropped it. When i think of it, i only remember the old anime that covered the part i liked. I've had little interest in going back to it since then and expect that I'd like it even less now, because I'm a pissy old bastard now LoL
I've read that Miura said in an interview that he did come to regret many of the rape scenes. They did get a little gratuitous.
First time hearing this
Do you have links to these interviews you mention?
They didn’t and I don’t recall him ever saying that
I came across this comment you may be interested in:
No he didn't, but it's easy to see how someone would misunderstand his words given some parts of the fanbase' seething dislike of anything sexual assault related. In the 2019 Le Figaro interview, he was asked about if he ever thought the more extreme content was going too far. He responds that at the time of writing, he questioned whether or not it would be allowed, and the head of the editor's board did as well, however his specific editor defended him quite well, and enabled him to publish what he did. He goes on to explain that with the hindsight of knowing that "in the moment, an author always convinces himself that his decisions for the story are the correct ones ones" he does sometimes ponder whether it was really that necessary.
He keeps talking for a bit, and ultimately decides that the early era of manga was far more tolerant, what we'd see as theft or plagiarism now would have been seen as mere parody back then. That allowed a freedom of expression that enabled early manga to explore all sorts of subjects, and "overcome taboos". But even if that isn't the case anymore, "Berserk was born at a time when such things were still possible." is what he ends the question with.
When taken out of context, "he did question whether it was necessary" would sound like "yes he did regret it". However the context and continuation is important, as he questioned whether it was necessary when he was writing it, not nowadays. Additionally, while he did ponder it occasionally recently, he decided that if he wasn't given the room to explore those topics, Berserk wouldn't have been the story that it is now. Add onto that how he seems to look back nostalgically for that "more tolerant" period of early manga history rather than disapprove of it, and how he went from "questioning", which implies actively doing so, when he wrote it to merely "pondering", which implies it's far more idlily done, at the time of the interview, and I'd argue he may have actually wanted to explore it again but felt unable to due to a less tolerant social climate.
@@sfwreaths1 I don't. As I said, I only read about it, but never saw the original comments. It was also several years ago.
Griffith did nothing wrong
