Actually, the good things Grant did, such as try to carry out the Reconstruction of the South according to the way that Lincoln envisioned it, a direction in which Andrew Johnson had not been going--they far outweigh his mistakes. There were indeed a few scandals, having mostly to do with Grant being a loyal man to his friends (a quality which served him well in war, but not so much in Politics) but these scandals were blown way out of proportion by the Southern sympathizing newspapers that still hung around for a long time after the war was over, and were all magnified by the Lost Cause School of history.
No Grant was better off without drink. He was one of those finely tuned mechanisms that just couldn't handle it. By all accounts after just 2 drinks he "quacked like a duck."

Cool little gasoline story jiri reminded me of 10-12 years ago me and a couple buddy’s were up doing everything under the sun ran out early early morning started combing the house for something anything so we ended up thinking “gasoline” lots of things have it let’s gooo! So we were hopping over fences in a subdivision looking for lawn mowers, finally found one, opened the fuel tank up flipped it upside down and dumped it into a water bottle, then we went off to a baseball diamond to sit on the bleachers and huff some gas as the sun came up and one of my buddy’s came driving by on his way to work stopped at a stop sign and was like I thought that was you’s what the hell are you guys doing?
