I'm in the process of building mine, but since I'm left handed mine will have a c7 A1 upper, the beauty of this platform is you can do what suits you, right. Thanks for your knowledge buddy.

    The stock on that M1 carbine...
    YES, this is an AR video, but about the M14: When I reported to Marine Corps OCS in 1975, we were issued M14s. They were still officially the standard rifle of the Marines, even though all combat units used M16A1s (which were listed as 'substitute standard). In '77, when I reported back to complete training, I was issued an M16A1, with the metal buttplate and provision for cleaning kit storage.
    Would you double check the 'Gun AirCREW Unit' for GAU? My understanding was that it stood for 'Gun, AirCRAFT Unit', in the same category as the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon on the A-10 Warthog. A quibble I know, but I have to ask. 🤔

    Misha, Love your channel. I recently scored an old Bushmaster receiver that I turned into an ‘almost’ A1 clone. But the case deflector and A2 lower/pistol grip kept it from being Vietnam-ish. But it looks to me here that I have the perfect receiver to build a Car-15 (Commando?) since it has the A1 upper sight, shell deflector, and A-2-ish lower. Thanks for the great work, Chris, Tx

  • @caseymacgregor8089
    @caseymacgregor8089 Před rokem +1

    Regarding the Colt branded reproductions- they were contracted out to US Ordnance in Nevada, they did use new A1 forging dies for the lowers as opposed to re-profiled A2 receivers, and the slightly larger diameter barrel forward of the front sight is in fact correct for a factory Colt Commando (length issues aside). The barrels on factory 11.5 guns had a slightly different profile compared to longer pencil carbine barrels.
    I also believe that the Troy versions had M4 feed ramps and the 1:7 twist. Not saying that to dunk on it or pretend that the Colt isn’t overpriced, but wanted to mention it in fairness.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 Před rokem +2

      Yes to the twist rate, i forgot to mention that. As to the profile, that one gets a bit complicated as I've come across a few different barrel diameter profiles. I mean all are slim, but just how slim seems to vary a bit. Again these weren't TDP guns, so running changes happened. Heck, most actually fielded were 10" too, which is kind of wild considering how much exposure the 11.5" gets. As to themfg for Colt, 2 different ones were used because the business relationship brokedown with USO. Dealing with Colt is messy. I would have kept a colt if it wasn't 2x the price. Also the 14.5" barrel did kind of bug me for some reason? *shrug*

      @caseymacgregor8089 Před rokem +1

      Interesting about the change in manufacturer; I hadn’t heard that. I only know my 2021 produced GAU-5/A/A was made by USO since they serviced it when I noticed that it had an F marked front sight base.

      @@nedanschutz For years, the only AR i had ever fired was an SP1. Probably explains why i wanted an A2, just because i didn't have that one and at the time colt really didn't make a 100% correct M16A2 in semi-auto form. Nothing against the Sporter-II series, just wasn't what I was looking for. Luckily, an A2 fell off the back of a Colt shipping truck, so I have had mine for a long time now.

    I knew a guy who was in the Marine Corp Reserves back in the Gulf War era and he said some of the Marines were being issued Garands. He was a Hi-Power match shooter, so I think he knew what he was talking about. Sounds reasonable to me. Some of the Moros on the PH island of Mindanao are shooting Garands, M-14's, and M-16s. I don't think the jungle environment is affecting them because the PH Marines and Army can't beat them.

    Looks like I’m back to loving the old classic M4 again and here’s a new interesting inspiration that has made me love the M4 again… the most famous user of the older CAR15s before the M4 is Delta Force. Delta Force is the first of any US military group to field the CAR15 at full scale instead of the more common HK MP5 used by most special forces teams. And speaking of Delta Force, the most notable member is Mr. Larry Vickers, and the CAR15 he carried is a Colt 723 with the M4 profile barrel. His Colt 723 is fitted with a QXL Surefire flashlight and an Aimpoint 2000 RDS, which Mr. Larry absolutely loves and he’s a major fan of Aimpoint and according to him… “This is what put Aimpoint on the map.” And thanks to the CAR15 being largely successful with Delta Force, that inspired the US military to ultimately adopt the M4, thus becoming TDP in 1995.

      It seems to be a short barrel + fixed A1 buttstock. If you are asking for production numbers, not even Colt has those. A lot of those models were more in theory rather than full production. Just things Colt could put in its catalogue in case someone out there might want a specific configuration. If no big orders came in, then Colt just didn't produce many. Really only a few thousand of theentire Commando series were built back between 1966 and 1970. For the 651, 652, and 653 series; not a ton either.
