- About the Boat(s) :"SUCK MY WAKE" (there were 2)
from the film:The Great Outdoors
It's a 1970 19' Miller California-style Flatbottom Ski/Drag boat and not a Jetboat.
This style of boat uses an aft mounted automotive V8 motor mounted to a V-Drive which in turn spins a propeller with steering provided by a rudder.
Motor:454 cid Big Block Chevy with a Tunnel Ram Concealed inside the gutted 6-71 blower.Exhaust are chrome plated over transom Headers.
Horsepower: not 50hp try 550+ hp.Original owner:John Frazier
Dan Akroyd being the good Ontario cottage boy that he is mentions Jetboat/Kick ass Dragboat in the same sentence but in his day Jetboat meant a low profile chrome plated inboard
ski boat which from a distance to the untrained eye looks very similar to a Cali Dragboat.
"About 'Suck my wake boat'. Filming was done at Bass lake CA.. The director knew nothing about boats, we went through several boats , spending $100k on boats,
When Dan Akroyd saw this flatbottom ripping up the lake, Dan said "that's the boat" , the prob was it had one seat ,
I said if that's the boat you want , it's sitting in my garage, my brother in law has the same boat , ( mine was a wood deck , his was fiberglass, both were "Millers" both had bench seats , 1/3, 2/3 , (bucket/bench combo) the production bought both $$$$$ . We didn't want to deal wth the blower, so we put a hollowed out blower over the existing tunnel ram . One of the famous lapoint brothers did the skiing,
John Candy sat on the back of a ski boat
Special skis for the streak, and smoke on the dock ( no CGI back than)
The ramp scene was scripted "-John Frazier

Cheers
Very cool song and great video!! I liked it and subbed you!!
Did anyone notice the blower wasnt turning?
In the video description it's mentioned:
"We didn't want to deal with the blower, so we put a hollowed out blower over the existing tunnel ram".
The bullsh*t moment for me was the shot of Akroyd using the cavitation plate handle like a gearshift lever. It almost ruined the whole sequence for me, much like Marty McFly playing a Gibson ES345 which was introduced in 1958 in what was supposed to be 1955 in Back To The Future. That said, at least they didn't commit the cardinal sin of swapping inboard and outboard engine sounds which happened (in both directions) all too often in films and TV.
What ruined it for me was finding out that John Candy wasn't really water skiing. It was a stunt double. How could Hollywood try to fool us like that?
Even worse than that the car could not even travel through time, i was so upset when i found that at.....
Well we can tell you don't like jet boats
Au contraire mon frère. I actually own a classic 70's Jetboat which I prefer over my old V-drive Flatty.
