  • Newcastle Light Rail is a light rail line running through the city of Newcastle, Australia's seventh largest city. It opened in 2019, replacing an existing railway line (but using little existing railway equipment), and all sections of the line are non-electrified (overhead line-less), with no overhead lines present.
The drive system is not battery-powered, but a special structure called a hypercapacitor, which is recharged for very short periods of time at each station, and is the only such system in Australia.

First time I've seen a hypercapacitor system in action, fascinating!

you should not be in a hurry to travel with this tram, man, the tram is slow to move, the system is beautiful but there are certainly batteries in this tram to keep it moving and charge it at each stop to go to the next stop come.thank you for sharing this video

Very interesting system! Makes more sense than using "1 million" tons of batteries. I saw some middle line in the ground (between the rails). I suppose that it makes a short in-motion charging. 🤔

I guess these trams couldn’t go much slower than a street clogged with traffic.

Looks like this tram is battery powered.
