  • We're grateful to partners like Mrs. Duchene of Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance (Brooklyn, NY) for opening their community gardens to us for a shared ecological monitoring project. Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance is one of our Vegetable Garden Kit recipients, and Deputy Director of Ecology Elijah Goodwin set up a malaise trap in their garden to collect insect samples that will be sent off for DNA barcoding at the University of Guelph. This data can help Isabahlia's garden identify and manage the pests and beneficial insects like biocontrol species and pollinators present in their vegetable beds. We're grateful to our partners for expanding the insect library we're building and for teaching us how the experimental vegetable varieties we are trialing at Stone Barns Center respond to growing conditions elsewhere in the New York region. Community gardens are essential to build an ecological food system for everyone. Support this ongoing work with community gardens in our region by purchasing a Supporting Neighbor Vegetable Farm Share when the 2023 Farm Share Program launches.
