In Army basic one of the last mail calls before we graduated we had a trainee named Rudd. She got about 22 letters that evening and the Drill Sergeant just had her stand up there while he repeatedly just screamed, "RUDD!!!!" everytime he saw her name on a letter. It was absolutely hilarious.
Not gonna lie when I went to basic training I was so bored every night having no mental stimulation at all, I asked my parents to send me a business related book just so I can read before lights out. Them fuckers took that shit and told me you trying learn how to do deal US weapons to the Taliban? 😂

My drill sergeant used to make us do 10 hand release burpees for every piece of mail we got and my buddy got a shit ton all at once I think it was about 15 letters. He was outside forever hahaha
I remember my uncle (retired army Master sergeant) would send letters all the time but between my name he would have something crazy like "can't smoke a rock", "Mr. 300", "your future commander/PSG/1SG". Drill sergeant would read the entire line, smoke the shit out of me, and then give me the letter. Great times!
When I was inMarine Corps Boot camp, you did not EVER want to get a ‘care package’ (box with snacks) from home. You were made to eat it all and then do squat thrusts until you puked. Then you caught hell for puking on the DI’s floor. The worst I saw was a guy who got a fruit cake from home.
I was lucky to receive letters almost every day. Definitely kept me from losing my mind lol. I did feel bad for the ones who never received a letter and on some days I’d be getting a little stack. One time my mom sent a single Starburst in the envelope with the letter. It wasn’t noticeable. This was half way through bootcamp at RTC so it was very nice.

The last piece was sad. My best advice is to not expect anything from anyone and you won't disappointed.

Majority of people don’t even go on combat tours. Maybe from your privileged ivory tower, it doesn’t seem like benefits, but for many people including myself, it gave me an opportunity to go to college, and I’m now a paper engineer with a steady pay. Without the USMC, I never would’ve gotten here.
