      Thank you so much! I was just about to say that. April didn't break them up, and Vanessa Marano definitely didn't break them up. How nuts is it that people blamed a (real) child for the break up of two (fictional) adults? I thought her character was great, and really expanded the possibiities for growth in Luke beyond his relationship with Lorelai (or with Jess, but that was such a chest thumpy male relationship).

      April's mom wasn't the problem either. I used to think she was problematic when I was younger, but now, being a full adult I don't she her that way.
      The only two confrontation Anna had with Luke/Loreilai on the April front were:
      -The birthday party incident. Even though she could have handled it more gracefully taking into consideration that the event was actually a success, I can see why she was angry that it was facilitated by a complete stranger! She was the one who knew the parents of the kids in attendance, she was the one they were trusting with taking care of their children, she would have been the one they held accountable had anything gone wrong, so giving full control to someone, who has never even benn introduced to Anna without notifying her was a very poor decision...
      -The NM move. In which she was also right. She did not say Luke will never get to see April, she was saying that she wanted to have April settled, before arranging any trips back "home" for her. If she was really homesick in NM it would not have benefited her if she was to spend every other weekend or so "back home", because it would have made the transition even harder for her.
      Anna was actually the responsible adult in these situations, who had a fair amount of experience in being a single parent and therefore baring all the responsibilities and difficulties on her own, and Luke was the rookie in the game, who never thought things proporly through, he always acted upon his first instinct...

      I think people hated what April *represented* (a road block between Luke & Lor) more than they hated the *actual* girl. There are *SEVERAL* people who have commented here that April wasn't really the problem, as much as Luke & Lor's lack of communication was what *REALLY* threw a monkey wrench into their relationship at that time. Luke didn't tell Lor about April when he should have, and Lor didn't talk to Luke about Christopher. Those observations are so spot on to me!!!!!

He harped on Lorelai to tell him the truth and communicate and be honest with him about stuff she does in her life (i.e. Christopher). Then this huge thing happens to him and he hides it and lies and then just makes it worse and worse. Yeah Anna played a role and should have told Luke way back when, but Luke was the reason they broke up.

Lorelai wanted Luke to always accept when Lorelai said she didn't want to marry until Rory was back... then Luke found out about April and I Luke wanted to bond with April...Lorelai would have taken over she would have tried to be the parent... Lorelai broke them up when she came back impatient demanding to get married and the she went and slept with Christopher! Theres something wrong with that. April was a child who just wanted to know the father that she never met, and Anna was a mother who just didn't want her daughter with a stranger. It was Luke's job to show Anna that Lorelai was not just some woman, that she was his fiancé that she was going to be in his life for the rest of his life, and in turn she is going to always be in April's life too. I actually like April more than Rory. She was a normal, awkward, very clever kid and yet her intellect and virtues were never exaggerated. She went to MIT and then graduate school. So she's clearly very focused and has her priorities straight. She's also passionate and a go-getter. We see from the revival that she can fight for a cause she believes in. She was just a good, well rounded character. It would have been fun seeing her development.
    And whilst many people say they would have liked to have seen her interact with Rory, personally I would have liked to have seen her interact with Jess. Rory's a lost cause. I actually feel that April is a foil to Rory's character. Everything Rory was falsely hyped up to be April actually is.
    Rory was a generally good and smart kid, whose intellect was very exaggerated; as was her 'goodness'. She got into Yale with the help of a very expensive private education; struggled in said private school; struggled at Yale and could never cope with struggling. She was ok as long as things were easy for her, but the minute they got hard...
    I mean College Rory would have frowned on anyone taking cannabis whilst happily participating in affairs herself. She was judgemental, and quiet hypocritical.

    • @olat2597
      @olat2597 Před 3 lety +24

      Rory had a 4.2 at Yale at one point. I don't think her intellect was exaggerated. Struggling to do hard things doesn't mean you're not smart, it means you're being challenged. Nevertheless, she definitely made a lot of bad decisions.

      @SB-sg4em Před 3 lety +6

      @@olat2597 Did she have a 4.2 GPA? Because they never showed us anything to support that tidbit.
      And Rory never did well with challenging environments. She was only good so long as things were easy for her, the minute they became challenging she'd pack it in.
      I did more than the normal number of A-levels and then a Literature degree. It was definitely challenging, and I had moments of self doubt but I always persevered and pushed myself to do better and meet the challenges. I didn't throw in the towel the moment I had a more difficult assignment or less than glowing feedback. Rory couldn't cope with one of the most basic aspects of academic life - things get challenging, you have to deal with it and stretch yourself to continually do better.

    • @AvecPoesie
      @AvecPoesie Před 2 lety

      I must say, I emphatically agree with this assessment of Rory. I grew up academically-gifted and thus was essentially sequestered in school with other brainy, ambitious, high-achieving, gifted kids. I knew that hyper-judgmental, overly-critical, yet weak type of girl! They are very common! So accustomed to being placed upon a pedestal since childhood that they cannot tolerate an ounce of challenge or criticism. Ugh. Being around such individuals, one in particular, was a very unnerving and trauma-inducing environment.

    This was worth every second. It's great learning that Ms. Marano was basically a super-fan before joining the show. She's so different now because she's older, it's cool to hear she's an April fan now. As a fan of "Switched at Birth", I didn't know I had already seen her in anything else, and then I saw older-April in "A Year in the Life". I was like "Wait, that's HER?? SHE was April??" Then I went on IMDB and confirmed it. She's great in both shows, and I can't imagine anyone hating her as either character. April was seriously quirky, like revenge-of-the-nerds quirky-cool. I'm glad the online haters didn't affect Ms. Marano. She seems cool as well. Great interview.

    Honestly, I always really liked April. She was about my age when I was growing up and watching the show and I always found her kinda relatable. :) I was never one of those big shippers that cared deeply about who Rory or Lorelai ended up with. I just liked the cute town and the funny people in it.

    April didn't break them up - it was how Luke dealt with her being in his life. I hate to say it, but it seemed like he was constantly using April as a way to distance himself from the relationship, and I'm not sure why :\

    I didn't know anybody hated April. April was awesome. Luke just freaked out about her existence. Lorelai was hurt by Luke's shutting her out. Anna went off on Luke and Lorelai because she was upset about it when he finally stopped shutting her out. Then, Lorelai freaked out and said marry me now or we're breaking up. Luke reacted badly to being put on the spot and needed a minute to process. Lorelai then sought solace in Chris's arms because he's her drug of choice when she's upset. So then understandably Luke didn't want to be with her anymore. Other than her existence being the catalyst for the communication issues, April didn't have anything to do with it.

I never viewed it as April broke up Luke and Lorelai. I didn't even hear about this until now. Luke wanted to be a father full time to April, that's why he broke up with Lorelai. That's his own personal way of thinking he can't be a good father if he's in a relationship. That is not the general way of life.

It was like watching a soap opera, and GG clearly wasn’t. A hidden daughter who wants to find her father just because she’s doing a science project?! A hidden daughter?! No thanks! Secondly, she makes a VERY, VERY good point when she brought up 1.) the fact that a girl's education was a central part of the show, and 2.) so was a woman owning and running her own business.
    I'm a guy who considers himself pretty progressive. I think, maybe, deep down, I liked those two things too, without really realizing it, and perhaps that is a factor of why I loved this show as much as I did.

    April was a really cool character, it was just the writing that was awful and thus the writing that broke up Luke & Lorelai. I think the writing really messed with the foundation of a lot of the main characters and who they were at their core. And then in S7, new writers had to finish out the last season, so it really was a mess. But I'm just grateful they got L&L back together, even though it was in the last 10 minutes of the last episode. Kind of a bummer so much time was wasted, but at least we got some decent stuff in the revival, though it was an even bigger bummer they hadn't already gotten married and had kids of their own. But it was more than I hoped we'd ever get as fans, so I still enjoyed it and I love re-watching the show, especially the earlier seasons

    the internet trolls really annoy me. Vanessa played that part so well. She did not break them up. Luke's secret keeping, his inability to express himself and his belief that things should remain separate in their lives, and Lorelai's communication, not to mention trauma over Rory created a dynamic where they were floundering. April was adorable and was not in any way devious or mean or trying to hurt anyone. I think she helped soften Luke even more.
