That’s why Ohio State’s Department of Public Safety has released a new “Surviving an Active Aggressor” video to educate the campus community. The 9-minute video provides important updates to the university’s original safety tutorial released in 2015. We encourage all Buckeyes to watch to enhance the safety of students, faculty and staff.

I have some tips for the fight section:
1) I have found that screaming with all your might in the face or ears of someone can temporarily disorient them, making them easy to take down, if only for a few seconds.
2) Going for the legs and arms is good and all, but I believe that targeting the groin is better. Kick it, punch it, hit it with your own weapons, it will make it so much easier to take down the shooter.
Don't go for the groin. unless they are literally standing still and your 3 inches away you WILL MISS IT. instead, dig your fingernails in the behinds of their neck. If your lucky you will hit an artery, and they'll pass out. Otherwise, it does immense pain.

just make sure the gun is shoved downwards or upwards, preferably downwards, so that if they pull the trigger mid attack they will most likely miss, or you will only get shot in the foot, which is arguably preferable to anywhere else

We go over this 6 times a month at my school. We're just in middle school. This is hell. At my little brother's school (he's just a little 8 year old) everyone is being told to buy bulletproof backpacks "just in case". A cop explained to me at an assembly that even if I'm being f-ing killed I can't run home. Or call my mom for help. I just LOVE living in America. I'm really scared about going to school. I haven't even turned 12 yet.
Update: Y'all, I'm almost 13 now. Some rules have changed. We don't go over this as often, but my brother (now 10 years old) still goes over it often. In middle and high schools, however? Rarely, more like twice a month

i've kind of been in the same situation. these kids in my class talked about bringing a gun to school and pointed a finger gun to my head. me and my friends told our guidance counsler and parents and the police got involved. now i have nightmares, panic attacks because of that. please report or tell a trusted adult if you see the signs.

Here are some tips: (I'm not an expert)
1. If you fight back, scissors are the best idea. If possible, throw desks and chairs at the attacker if they come in. Injure the attacker as much as possible, this is self defense
2. Run if possible, it doesn't matter where you run to, just run somewhere far away from the area
3. Hide in a place where the shooter has already been
4. If there is a gun shot, try and fall and play dead
5. Use a group to restrain the attacker until the police arrive, throw the heaviest and sharpest things possible to harm the attacker
Bonus tip: If you’ve managed to take down the shooter, dont pick up the weapon, as you could be mistaken for a shooter if the police or someone else sees it. Its best to kick it away with your feet.

From the perspective of someone that is fairly knowledgeable on guns I would be holding onto that gun ready to use it if say the shooter gets away and is armed with another weapon, I now have a very effective weapon for stopping the threat. On the other hand as simple as a firearm is to use and handle safely I feel like someone who has never touched one before probably shouldn’t be holding one in a high stress situation.
As someone who’s not been in a situation like this, *follow my steps.*
1. If the shooter is in your school and your door locks from the outside, have your teacher take a chair and put it in the handle, turn it so it jams the handle.
2. Calm others around you! If they are screaming and crying, grab their hand and cover their mouth, it’s the only way you can survive.
3. If the shooter is near your classroom or is firing shots into a different classroom, immediately crawl under a desk or anything, and shield yourself with a backpack, or even the chair.
4. If the shooter is in your room, don’t bother calling the cops. The shots should be heard from different classrooms, and they should be capable of calling the cops, they aren’t dumb***es. (Sorry for my child audience reading this 😢 please ignore that word).
5. If necessary, grab hella heavy items, or extremely sharp items such as scissors, or your binder, try sharp pencils too.

this resonates with me because a few weeks ago my school got a shooting threat. the person who threatened was seriously gonna do it. they had weapons. they were a previous student at my school. it’s weird because one day i had a feeling that there was gonna be a shooting, then the next day we found out there was a threat. i just knew that something was gonna happen. i’m glad that nothing actually happened. the person was arrested because they were actually gonna do it. it wasn’t a prank, or a way to get attention or whatever. i was terrified the day that i felt something was gonna happen. i just had a gut feeling.

I’m from the UK, and thing like these never happen but the fact people need these videos is heart shattering. Honestly, I feel so bad for everyone involved, including family, friends, pets and victims. Thing like this must be so traumatizing and scary. My heart goes out to everyone involved in an active shooter situation. I honestly blows my mind that these things are still happening TODAY. I really thought people knew better and thought about others and how traumatized everyone would be.

It always seems like bathrooms are the most dangerous places, depending on the design. Either they have no windows or thick windows that you can't break. I practice my own active shooting training at my job since my boss won't listen to me and get security. Only one of our branches has enough room where the workers could possibly survive. The other location is too small. Sometimes businesses and organizations don't take danger seriously until it happens. And it is a shame.

I've been in one, that is THE best thing you can do. Except, run in zig zags. I found that very helpful. That way, the shooter will constantly have to move his aim and gun.

And that is absolutely right. Running is first priority. If you can’t run, deny entrance but be READY to fight, don’t just hide. And then fight as a last resort. Use strength in numbers. And most people who turn into shooters are mentally unstable so try to run away in a path that’s not straight. Don’t give them an easy target

One thing to keep in mind is that hiding spots may keep you safe, but they won't keep you safe forever. The shooter or attacker is CONSTANTLY on the move. You have to also be on the move, just be careful. If you do end up getting tailed by the attacker, use whatever you can. Use your teeth, objects, even your nails can work. I scratched my brother and sister on accident, and they were both bleeding with long cuts down their arms. Do whatever and use whatever you can.
Anyone else randomly ask themselves at school "what would I do if there was a shooting right now" it may be just me but i do it to make sure i have a plan because you never know!

It’s like I was in one and it was truly scary as a person who never experienced it and just had a small feeling about it huge respect to anyone that experienced it and rest in peace to those who lost their lives in one
Ever since November 30th, I've been addicted to watching these in light of various threats. These videos are great for what I and many other students and staff have had to deal with.
Quick bit of advice:
Making a joke is fine, but NEVER joke about mass murder or school shootings, especially during events that affect entire districts.
Just don't make jokes of serious stuff at all.
Other things to keep in mind. Now, I'm not law enforcement. These are things I've heard from other videos.
1. Do get the gun away from the attacker, but try not to pick it up if it can be avoided. Present officers will be on high alert and you don't want to appear to be the shooter.
2. If you have to run, run in a zig-zag. This makes it harder for the shooter to keep their aim on you.
3. Leave any and all belongings behind. Yes, even your phone. Odds are, 911 has already been called. Your life is more important than a replaceable object.
Number 3 isn't exactly correct. Never assume someone else already called the police.

If a school shooting is occurring at your school and someone is at the door or your classroom and stating that they’re an officer, don’t always believe them. The school shooter could always be pretending to be an officer to lure students and teachers out of the classroom. If they’re unprofessional and saying words like “bro,” or “guys,” they probably are not a real officer. As the video said, call 911 to see if the officers are at your school yet. And if they say they aren’t, do NOT open the door for the person outside it. Also, always be prepared to fight back, but only as a last resort. For example, if they’re getting really close to your classroom, grab anything that could deal lots of damage to the shooter. Such as a hardcover book, one of those big metal water bottles, a backpack, a lamp, etc. Then, if the shooter enters the classroom, quickly tackle them down or throw items at them! Just make sure you don’t hit one of your fellow classmates with it. Do NOT just sit in the corner with the rest of your classmates, unprepared, with your classes door not barricaded, hurry up and stack desks, bookshelves, or anything that’s solid and heavy enough to hold an intruder back. ALSO, if you manage to get the shooter disarmed and on the ground, do NOT touch the gun! If cops enter the classroom and see you grabbing the gun the shooter was holding, they could assume the shooter was you and tackle you to the ground. Cops only goal are to arrest the shooter in the building so no more people get shot and injured, so they’ll quickly tackle the person with the rifle. School shootings can happen at any time, at any school. There’s always a chance it may happen to you, so always be ready without hesitation if you start hearing gunshots in your school.

Joanne Tran. it’s logic. if you had a certain amount til the cops come, your objective is to get the most people quick. bathrooms never have more then 3 people. to a psychopath, that’s not nearly enough to waste a minute on.
That's worse. The attacker will know that someone could be in the stall and can shoot through the gaps. It's better to get into the nearest classroom you can if it's safe to do so

Mhm, at my school we just simply go on the oval or road during a fire and during a lockdown (active shooter, bomb etc.) we just hide in the teachers office or under our desks. We also try to attack wth our pencil cases, iPads and things. I was once in a class at the main building and we had a drill (practice) and they literally just crammed all us in an open area and made us watch a movie on our teachers laptop lmfao.

Actually harder than you think, bullets are really small compared to a human sized target and easy to miss especially on moving targets. So don't give up on running, even if you take bullets in some cases you still can run thanks to adrenaline.

Adrenaline in your body will not make you stop. I was running in gym, and I imagine that someone is chasing me. Someone got me right in the shoulder and I had a bruise and a huge cut for 4 weeks. But, I finished the mile in 5:43 seconds.
@@rosedorada One big cut is ok, but multiple big cuts isn't. There is only to much adrenaline. Even small cuts could hinge the adrenaline effects if they are abundant
