  • Spanning over a decade from the early 1950s through to the mid-60s, "Novitiate" is about a young girl's first initiation with love, in this case with God. Raised by a non-religious, single mother in rural Tennessee, a scholarship to Catholic school soon finds Cathleen drawn into the mystery and romanticism of a life devoted to the worship and servitude of God. With the dawn of the Vatican II era, radical changes in the Church are threatening the course of nuns’ lives. As she progresses from the postulant to the novitiate stage of training, she finds her faith repeatedly confronted and challenged by the harsh, often inhumane realities of being a servant of God. Cathleen finds herself struggling with issues of faith, sexuality and recent changes in life of the Church. Watch the director and cast discuss this powerful film on the BUILD stage.

I love Dianna she has matured a lot since I was into her stuff. And Margret Qualley is on the rise she is an amazing actress and I feel she is going to get her big break in the near future.

Nice interview, but why oh why did you situate your 5 guests like that?
They can‘t communicate with each other sitting in 2 rows behind each other. It feels very awkward like they get isolated from each other all facing to the front.
Why not interview them sitting in a half circle like in other talk shows?
That‘s sooo weird.... (very patriarchal structure)

The director did not read the Vatican II document on religious life. Vatican II did not tell the religious to get rid of the habit, but simply modify it...there's a difference. They still need to wear a habit appropriate for their community's apostolate

Margaret Qualley and Dianna Agron in the same movie. Sexy. I know, it's not Blue is the warmest color part 2 and they'll probably just... be very clothed nuns from start to finish, but still. Oh, and the movie looks solid, despite the fact that it seems to be praising a cultural and societal disaster like Vatican II (which was only a good thing from a liberal or atheistic point of view). Melissa Leo always delivers, and it's nice to see Nicholson, loved her in Masters of sex. I just hope it won't get too political, and only focus on the characters.
