  • This is a homemade sail rig for my 16' fiberglass canoe. It's complete with leeboard, rudder system, and outriggers. All the parts used in construction can be found at your local hardware store for around $100 (if you already have the power tools). You'll need sail material or a pre-made sail. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions on how it was constructed.

    This is an excellent video showing how to make your canoe into a sailboat. Great description of materials and showing the systems.

    Fantastic man! I tryed a Rutter on mine similar but found using the oar method suited better for my area. And I opted for a stand alone mast. To lessen the cordage ,logs of fishing gear gets cought in it. Nice use of the gear man.

    Thats a good system -I made a sail and outriggers for my canoe with a video on how to make the sail and mast base stuff cheaply for like 20 dollars-But I never made a rudder yet and thought I would tell you that yours looks like something I am going to make a project this winter-thanks for posting-see ya on the water

    Looks good. I've been brainstorming a similar design. Was considering a square sail. Yours looks very well built. Trade skills!

    @SuperHaxzor The boom is attached using a 1/4" bolt which goes through the boom. Attached to that bolt is a 1/4" eye bolt. The eye bolt goes through the 1 1/4" conduit and is secured with a washer and wingnut on the other end. The boom is 10' tall with an 18" extension I crafted from a 1" PVC filled with a wooden dowel. The extension is screwed through the conduit and into the wood-filled pvc. Thanks!

    @mrbingle100 Yes. I've sailed it and it works ok for being homemade. I had to make some adjustments on one of the outriggers and on the rudder system. I'm not sure what kind of canoe this is. I know it's fiberglass, and you can see the "fibers" inside. I didn't notice any signs of stress.

    Dear Jon, Thankyou VM for sharing, and congratulations for this beautiful creation!. I want to build a boat, some day, is a dream. ¿How many people, or better, how much weight can your maximum canoe endure? Can you take 3 people and their fishing equipment ?. Congratulations and Very grateful to show us your inventions ! A great greeting from Córdoba Argentina!

    Hi, thanks for sharing such a wonderful project. I am thinking to make one and wonder what materials you used and where you got it for the mainsail. Thank you very much for the information!!!

    Hey did you make a halyard for hoisting and lowering the sail? Because I'm pretty much good to go but Idk what the head mast looks like on your rig nor do i see anyone explain it much (waiting to go to the library to check out some books)

    Nice looking work. How much flotation do the pool noodles have? I have a 15 foot Grumman I want to do the same thing too. I use to have a sailfish and I figure my canoe would work OK. I like the way you hung the sail to the mast with the PVC pipe. The crutches are a great idea. I have a few of them things made out of aluminum that are going to get donated to the project. :-) After looking at outriggers from other units they seem to all have much larger floats. Did yours work OK. They look great!

    Lots of inventive ITSABITSA stuff, does it really work, will the canue not fill with water? . why a shallow darft syle rudder which can kick up? show us how it sails with a 15knot wind, please.

    Why doesnt the rudder pipe just slide right down? whats holding it in place and allowing it to turn? is the flange and the pipe threaded? is there something there that isnt seeable in the video? I like ths , though.

    • @foxtale00
      @foxtale00  Před 2 lety

      Thanks. The flange and threaded pipe is just there for the conduit to slide freely through. The only thing is the rudder assembly can’t be removed from the mount. But as little as I used it that didn’t matter to me. I’ve since sold the canoe so I can’t continue improving it. It was a fun project that challenged my crude engineering skills. 😂

    You've got to be kidding? Two by fours, crutches and steel pipes! Hilarious. Probably THE most pathetic attempt at a sail rig I have EVER seen. The rig actually weighs more than the canoe! This wins the internet booby prize.

    • @foxtale00
      @foxtale00  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes and it worked. Btw, you can take your trolling elsewhere. I was having fun and seeing if I could make one that worked. If one wants to get serious at a sail rig, purchase one that is made for a canoe. And no it did not weigh more than the canoe and I used conduit not steel pipes. Big difference! Have a nice day!
