  • A wayward son returns to his childhood home.
CHIPPER is used with permission from Shaun MacLean. Learn more at / chipper_film .
Estranged from his family, Reese hasn't been back to his hometown in a while, preferring instead to wander the country on his motorcycle. But after he gets a strange, mysterious letter from his father, he decides to head back to his childhood home, where his sister Carol lives with their dad.
Reese discovers his father is dying, as well as a dark family secret that would change their dynamic forever if known. As pressure mounts, Reese is forced to make a painful decision -- but can he make it without destroying what's left of his family?
Directed by Shaun MacLean and written by Lane Skye and Ruckus Skye, this raw, resonant drama develops both a family story about a wayward son returning to the family home and a man who must reckon with a difficult decision about his dying elderly father. Through rich writing and perceptive directing, these stories intertwine to powerful effect, as its main character faces a crisis that will have momentous repercussions, no matter what he does.
The film has a weathered naturalistic look that fits its rural Southern setting, captured in rich, unvarnished cinematography that evokes a full, distinctive sense of place. Both the visuals and the writing are rich enough for the audience to understand why Reese left many years ago, and the first part of the narrative is Reese's discovery of what he's getting back into when he returns, pulled back by a strange letter from his father, addressed to CHIPPER, the childhood nickname he had for Reese.
What Reese discovers is a dying father, cared for by his sister Carol, who refuses to see just how far gone into illness their dad is and is resentful of Reese for saddling her with the burden of caring for their father alone without much support. Actor Jayson Warner Smith has the air of a free-spirited loner, driven to roam the land on his bike with spiky independence. But as the story deepens in emotional intensity, he also reckons with what his freedom has cost others, beautifully conveying anguish and guilt. In the end, forced to make a hard decision, he also reveals love and loyalty -- qualities that no one else but perhaps the audience will see in the end.
That fiercely held love haunts the conclusion of CHIPPER, which also brims with other questions. As the population ages in the U.S. and the job of caring for elders falls to Generations Jones and X care for them -- already squeezed in their other ways -- they will confront difficult questions about aging, mortality and quality of life, especially as both Reese and others realize how caretaking can take such a toll without social support. The film is admirably restrained in both artistry and tenor, but such questions can't help but gently provoke -- especially when delivered in such an emotionally layered, empathetic narrative as this.

Even though we were featured in about 30 festivals, we have never received this many views and feedback at any of them. We greatly appreciate your support and honest comments. Also a huge thank you to Omeleto for the wonderful write-up and for having us here in the first place.

@11:45, I knew EXACTLY what was happening. SPOILERS:
As someone who has been living with a brain tumor that was supposed to have killed me in 2020, coupled with finding out years ago that my oldest sister wasn't my dad's biological daughter, this video hit me like a freight train. It is so difficult to endure this, and having people to tell me to keep fighting...I can't even begin to describe exactly how difficult it is to not just give up and let go. I can't even imagine being trapped in my own body for so long, and being kept alive against my will because a loved one doesn't want to let go of you.
As for my sister, she is 100% my sister. I was there when my mom told her out of anger that our dad wasn't her biological dad. It happened 35 years ago, but the memory is so fresh, it feels as though it happened. The pain of seeing my sister break down uncontrollably when we heard this is a piece of me, much like this tumor. I just want to be at peace. I'm not afraid of dying, but I am absolutely TERRIFIED at the thought of leaving my wife and my baby girl alone in this world. Sometimes, you don't need people to physically hold you here. A single thought can keep you anchored here, long after you have been mentally broken and are ready to let go.
This short film has wrecked me, but it was so beautifully told. I NEEDED this release. Thank you so much to writers Ruckus and Layne Skye, and director Shaun MacLean, for one of the best short films I've seen featured on Omeleto.

In the intervening six years before we actually made the film, things changed drastically for me. Both my parents came very close to death but have survived. Both are alive and well but one of them isn't enjoying the time they have now at all. Coincidentally it's my dad. He isn't trapped like Chipper's dad but not far off from that. We hoped this film would help people like Chipper and Carol see that they are not alone but, what didn't occur to me until reading your note, was the effect it might have on a person who may be the one who isn't well. I saw it coming the second he offered money to the nurse... I understand his actions are driven by compassion, but by letting his judgement be clouded by emotions, now he will likely face murder charges. And he burned the letter! The death will be considered suspicious and an autopsy will reveal the needle mark, and then Carol will blame the nurse, but the nurse will say she was not in the house, and Carol will not have second thoughts wanting to throw him in jail. And the money he offered the nurse to leave him alone with his dad will probably count as premeditation, so he may as well face a first-degree murder charge. Notice how he doesn't use any gloves, so he doesn't even attempt to conceal the action. He probably did not see his action as murder, but it still was.

I watched this for the third time today. Partly because I could never quite catch the whole line that I did hear now, "with no help from the hippie biker or the junkie thief". It was not even among the 10 best parts of the dialogue in the movie but I obsessed over it.
Today the Sadness of the whole thing Got me a little teary. Whereas the previous two times I watched it I knew it was sad, but I focused on the strength and the selfishness of the characters.
Regardless this is absolutely one of the best stories I have ever seen on film. I never saw, "sometimes a great notion", but I read it. This is as good as story as that. Two friends of mine who also watched this gave it the same rave reviews.

Truth about her being adopted might eventually come out, but Chipper was dealing with decision of this particular moment, timing was everything, his actions had to be fast, but very well thought off and executed cause of seriousness of consequences, hence I think the authors chose well character of a biker - someone equipped to making fast life and death decisions fast, usually they have good moral code too,
Imagine - daughter thinks she's doing everything in her power towards sick father as her duty, and then she's finding out that not only that is not appreciate it, but father figure decided to tell her she's not biological daughter...and only thing he wants to die...., but thanks to empathy of Chipper, she will find her father dead and grief, but at least with this thought in the head ( and from brother's imagination) that she was loved and appreciated,,,so even after while she discovers adoption, this wont change this final words from dying father to her ..
