This was Terry Williams, and not his first show with them. Terry's father was in the audience so he gave it a little more energy than usual. He kept speeding it up, notice Mark kept looking back at him.
@@michealwolf4295 nah the bass player is John Ilsley. David Knopfler was the band's original rhythm guitarist but he'd left by the time of this concert and it's Hal Lindes playing second guitar to Mark Knopfler's lead.
No, he joined Dire Straits a year before that concert took place, he was on the Love over gold tour prior to Alchemy. It was the first time his old man had seen him in concert though, reason he put on such a good show.
This was from last couple of shows from the Love Over Gold tour. The album was titled Alchemy. Incredible performance and Terry Williams had performed on the whole tour of course. This epic performance was from the work of an utterly well oiled machine. There was only one Dire Straits and they were on a different level to most other bands. Headed by the virtuoso Mark Knopfler.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Yes! Around the 5:40 mark on original video the way Mark smirks when he's gettin after his solo... Like he knows he's a bada$$ about to melt minds is priceless and watching them jump around towards the end reminds me of The Peanuts 😂
After listening to the studio version - playing the album (which was released in 1978...) so often it started skipping... being at this performance in person (in July 1983, at the Hammersmith Odeon, in London, UK...) was an unforgettable experience... Thank You for keeping great music alive!💕
The studio version, the one that was played on the radio, was shorter and less elaborate. This live performance was for an audience that already knew that one, so the band had to add something to make a concert ticket worth it. Mark Knopfler, the one in red with the headband, is 74 years old now and still recording. He put out a new album in April 2024... it's less about speed and more about other kinds of intensity. He has retired from touring, but not from writing and recording. He even owns a professional recording studio in London.
"Live" performance with no over-dubs or auto-tune or electronic re-takes . . The way we did it in the 1950's, '60;s '70's & 80's for 4 hours a night 6 nights a week - -
1st time i heard this was in 1977 when it was just a demo tape sent out to DJ,s to play it they didnt have a contract back then and become one of the best bands from the 80,s till the 2000.s
Obviously the young lady didn't like it but hey, who care?? I just LOVED DIRE STRAITS, especially Sultans of Swing. Another of theirs I love is 'Walk of life' especially on the video. I'm SURE you would like it!!💖💖💖😼😼
@@Isleofskye I have an excuse mate, I am 83, lol but really, my memory good, just the fingers are not working properly and me, being a newspaper worker and using a computer for years. But, at least I can still laugh at myself. 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe there is a generation who have not experienced this kind of musicianship and who can only respond to stage or studio stuff that is now over produced, synthesised and a little plastic, that would be a pity.
I'm not a tenth of the guitarist that Mark Knopfler is (I think I'm a better lead singer, although he fits just fine in Dire Straits), and when I was playing and singing several times every week about 40-20 years ago, I had to sand my left hand fingertips every two weeks or so just, so I could fret the strings without looking at the strings. I imagine Mark has to do the same on both hands. I wrote the songs for my second and most successful band, The Uninvited, band, a more metal band, and we started our sets with a song called Necronomicon: in the first part, I would do a pick scratch all the way down the bottom E sting from 14th fret to first: my plectrum lasted maybe three gigs and two practices. To this day, I still carry a full tin of plectra at age 61 for my latest, a more conventional band called After Dark. My plectra last ages, because it's not a metal or hard rock band (it pays better). But I still need to sand the fingertips on my left hand every month or so. But I'll bet a million pounds to a pinch of p*ss that Mark does it multiple times a month. He never needs to look at his strings to know where he is. The one thing we share is: you have to suffer for your art. I would give my right testicle for a reaction like that Dire Straits did that day (I'm glad to say I was there), But it doesn't stop me trying.

Drums are out of this world !!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant !!!!!!!!!!!!
First time, ever, in my life, to come across someone, male or female, that was not moved by this song. Stunning...
Evidence that the current generation is devolving! Can’t handle more than 20 second TikToks. Such a shame.
She does not get it!

Let her go listen to Michael Jaxon or whatever

Terry Williams the drummer took this tune to a stratospheric level 👊👏🔥
I love Terry's drumming. I remember it from his days as the drummer with the Welsh band, Man. I have never witnessed a better rock drummer.
Yes, so good!!
Thanks for the drummers name, I've watched that performance dozens of times and the drummer blew me away, every single time!
Agreed

you know you're a good band when the crowd becomes your metronome.
Underrated comment 💚
...and he is not playing with a pick, he is fingerplaying with the right hand... 😍
And Mark is left-handed.
The original guitar played with just finger too. And bassist is lead singer brother.

I'm amazed anyone would find this outstanding performance "too much," but I suppose there's a first for everything when it comes to great music.
I deeply miss these kind of concerts!
Incredible band!!!
from an era where they actually could play instruments...
Those were the days!
They certainly were. What a band!
No overdubs or other "fixes" to this recording either. This was just how good they were.
I'm sooo grateful, that I was born early enough, to liv through this times...

How can you play the guitar so well while you're just smiling looking at people and not even looking at your guitar.

You can if you are Mark Knopfler. Brilliant guitar finger picker.

There is a slower version recorded 10 or more years later you might like. I like the tempo better, but the guitar solo is missing.
