The image of Mary as Mother of God is directly related to the first official Marian dogma defined by the Church. Various names are used to describe Mary's role as mother of Jesus. She is called Mother of God. The Greek term for Mother of God is Theotokos or Birth giver of God.
The first Christians called Mary the Mother of God without hesitation. It was based on the logical reasoning: if Jesus is God, and Mary is his mother, then that made her the Mother of God. There were arguments stating that the title Mother of God implied that Mary was the originator of God. Those objectors said that they could accept the title Mother of Christ, but not Mother of God. Calling Mary Mother of God states a truth that she is the mother of Jesus Christ. Mary the Mother of God is the link between Jesus’ humanity and divinity.
The Council of Ephesus (431) attributed to Mary the title, Mother of God. According to the Council the holy virgin is the Mother of God since she begot Word of God in her body. Through highlighting the privilege of Mary in fact stresses the dignity and holiness required to become "Mother of God." The privilege of the Immaculate Conception is the source and basis for Mary's all-holiness as Mother of God.
Long before the Church leaders officially declared Mary the Mother of God, her cousin Elizabeth knew what a special privilege Mary had been given.
Gregory the Wonderworker says that the Gospel of Luke delivers a testimony not only to Joseph but also to Mary, the Mother of God.
Ambrose of Milan says, “What is greater than the Mother of God? What more glorious than she whom God himself chose?”
Gregory of Nazianzus says, “If anyone does not agree that holy Mary is the Mother of God, he is at odds with the Godhead.”
Cyril of Alexandria says, “I have been amazed that some are utterly in doubt as to whether or not the holy Virgin is able to be called the Mother of God. For if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, how should the holy Virgin who bore him not be the Mother of God?”
Mary brought forth Jesus to the world, for this reason we call her Mother of God. Mary, mother of God, was only a young girl when she learned that she was going to be an important part of God’s plan for the whole world.
She is the Mother of God, since Jesus is truly God. Today numerous churches and shrines have been erected in the name of Mary the Mother of God. Mary today is venerated, acknowledged and honoured as being truly the Mother of God and Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the saviour.
