      @@gravityfuzz Indeed, they truly are lucky to have the privilege of piloting those incredible feats of engineering. The F-35A Lightning II is my favourite 5th Gen fighter jet and I’ve watched many of it’s displays … several in person. However, I have to say that this is the most conservative performance I’ve ever seen regarding the F-35’s manoeuvrability (which has been demonstrated in the past to be phenomenal considering it’s lack of vectored thrust).
      Edit : Seems like Capt Melanie Kluesner was lacking the “MACH” element on that day.

      Thrust vectoring gives the F-22 an edge for sure, but the F-35 pilot was pretty conservative in his routine. Nowhere near it’s limitations and not indicative of it’s capabilities.

    The F-22 having 2 Thrust Vectoring Nozzles that work independently of one another, as well as its' HUGE Rear Vertical/Horizontal Stabilizers, allow for it to be capable of Dog-Fighting. I think we can all agree that the F-22 is still dominant when it comes to close quarters air battles, which is just so sexy. The F-35 is just so High-Tech you won't see it before its already shot you down.

    • @Virvum_Juggernaut
      @Virvum_Juggernaut Před měsícem +1

      Actually, the F-22 only has limited 2D TVC (thrust vector control) enabling the thrust exiting both engine nozzles to simultaneously move up or down only. They don’t work independently of one another, aren’t controlled by the pilot directly and aren’t even true vectored thrust manoeuvring nozzles. Rather, their operation input is part of the flight systems control and the thrust is simultaneously directed either up or down by moveable paddles within both engine nozzles.
      Edit : To me, this makes the astonishing manoeuvrability of the F-22 even more impressive considering that it does not have 3D true thrust vectoring nozzles, nor nozzles with the ability to move independently from one another.

    • @SethingtonIII
      @SethingtonIII Před měsícem +1

      @Virvum_Juggernaut I was unaware that the engines did not work independently of one another!? Or, that the pilot did not control their angle. Thank you for that useful insight. I agree that even still: The F-22 with its higher speed capability, larger rear stableizers, providing it the ability to perform high energy attacks, as well as low-speed meneuvers, makes it a better dog fighter. The F-35 is, admittedly, not made for speed or dog-fighting, but instead made for long-distance reconnaissance, the ability to perform VTOL for quick take-off and landings, stealth (of course), and finally the ability to carry Nuclear Ordinance...
      Edit: F-35 is Scary in it's own right

    • @Virvum_Juggernaut
      @Virvum_Juggernaut Před měsícem +1

      @@SethingtonIII Being the smallest, fastest and most manoeuvrable of the 3 variants (i.e. A, B & C) the F-35A Lightning II is actually my favourite 5th Gen fighter jet and equi-favourite jet in concert with the SR-71 Blackbird. I love the compact design of the F-35A (looks superb from every angle), love the sound of it’s P&W F135 afterburning turbofan engine and love it’s performance capabilities of multi-role, air superiority, stealth and being the most lethal, yet survivable fighter in the skies to date due to it’s systems connectivity with the ability to think for itself and share the data with other aircraft, along with advanced sensors which allow it to track enemy aircraft long before they even know the F-35 is there. It has 360 degree situational awareness and the ability to conduct attacks electronically. Not to mention the pilot’s insanely cool $400K helmet which allows the pilot to see through the entire aircraft and enjoy an uninhibited 360 degree external environment view without having to tip the jet because it renders the aircraft’s outer frame invisible to the pilot. It has it’s own Head Up Display inside the visor (instead of mounted in the cockpit) so no matter where the pilot is looking, all the data is in front of his eyes. It also has built-in visor projected night vision. I also find it’s manoeuvrability astonishing considering it has no vectored thrust capability.
      Edit : BTW I wasn’t attempting to be rude or a smart ass by clarifying elements of the F-22 earlier, it was simply obvious that you’re informed aviation-wise and so I presumed you’d welcome the info. Have a good one Seth! 🤜🏻🤛🏻

I love talking about aviation, and these 5th gen fighters in particular. I'm just a sucker for nostalgia and I will always (like most aviation buffs) keep the F-22 close to my heart even though the F-35 is superior to a point that it does not need to "Dog Fight" anything. It is simply too advanced... Honestly, I didn't even get to talk about the SR-72, and it's Ram Jet Engines 😅. Thanks for the conversation and insight!!

      That’s largely a myth, I’ve talked to one of the demo pilots for a bit - there are maneuvers they’d rather not show, but peak-performance is limited by the pilot.
      The stuff they want to hide isn’t BFM stuff, it’s stealth / avionics etc.
      I was incredibly lucky enough to have ‘Loco’ invite me over the fence to see the Raptor up close. I could literally crawl under it - only rule was I couldn’t actually touch it. The primary weapons bay is HUGE. I also noticed a lot of stuff he couldn’t elaborate on lol.
      There’s a separate string-line around the aircraft where you aren’t allowed to take photos, but I didn’t care - it was still the coolest thing ever.

    Speaking of thrust and cool fast stuff, the new Corvette ZR1’s twin turbo flat plane crank Gemini V8 produces about 40lbs of static thrust from the exhaust system. Under full boost as the wastegates are fully open it actually produces a constant afterburner like flame. The Corvette engineers said it exits above the speed of sound under certain conditions as well. Meaning you might actually see some Mach diamonds form. I don’t care who you are, that’s cool right there.

    I wonder why the F-35 has a more powerful engine than the variants in the F-22. If the F-22 had the same engines as the F-35, it would probably be as fast as me-the Mig-31. And, I can hit Mach 3 for a short period of time.

      @deltasierracharlie Před měsícem +4

      No, that's not how that works.
      First of all, there's only one engine variant in/for the F-22: the F119-PW-100.
      Secondly, the F-35's F135 engine was based on the F119 engine that powers the F-22, but it was not designed/made for the Raptor and doesn't fit inside the Raptor's engine bays. It was specifically designed for the F-35's needs.
      Thirdly, like with most other modern fighter aircraft, the reason why the Raptor can't go all the way to Mach 3 has nothing to do with the engines themselves.
      They can't reach Mach 3 or even "only" Mach 2.5 due to limitations in the ability of the intakes to deliver good quality stable subsonic airflow to the engines (which they need even at supersonic speeds in order to function properly) and also because the materials used in the airframe structure can't handle the heat generated at high supersonic speeds (they will literally melt).
      In the specific case of the F-22, the jet can't fly at speeds any higher than circa Mach 2.2 simply because during the ATF program there was never a USAF requirement for the F-22 to be able to fly faster than that (and there was never a requirement for that because they obviously knew what I'm about to tell you below, and more). That allowed the designers to develop an aircraft that had much better flight performance at all others speeds below Mach 2+ and better low observability than one if they had been required to give it Mach 3 capability.
      Mach 3 means the jet would have been much heavier and certainly not VLO (Very Low Observable aka stealthy), because:
      1) you have to go with a full metal construction (can't use composites) and not just any kind of metal. It has to be unique alloys of titanium or steel that can handle the sustained extreme temperatures that flying at those speeds generate on the aircraft.
      The YF-12/A-12 and SR-71 Blackbird were mostly titanium, and the MiG-25/MiG-31 used mostly steel for example.
      This much reduced selection of materials that are available for a Mach 3 class aircraft means it would have been much heavier and much harder to make it VLO to radar and keep the weight down.
      2) In order for the engines to do their job without any problem a more complex and heavier air intake system with moveable intake ramps that control the supply of airflow to them is required. Not only that leads to an heaver aircraft, it also makes it more costly to build and mantain and possibly harder to make it stealthy.
      3) They would have been required to basically bury the cockpit as much as possible in the forward fuselage like you see in the YF-12, A-12, SR-71, MiG-25 and MiG-31 which would limit pilot visibility.
      And for the canopy they would have to use some kind of expensive plastic and glass combo material that offers much higher strength at high temperatures than normal canopies on fighter aircraft, but at the cost of worse optical qualities and higher weight.
      Finally, it would only make sense to develop an aircraft capable of Mach 3 flight if you also give it the fuel necessary to actually be able to use that capability in combat.
      Typical/normal fighter aircraft are not big enough to carry enough fuel to make that mach 3 speed capability useful (assuming one could actually design a normal fighter sized aircraft with Mach 3 speed)... A normal sized fighter by the time they would reach Mach 3 they would be low on fuel and would have to RTB asap.
      A Mach 3 capable fighter aircraft would need to carry a huge amount of fuel which in turn means big and massive size, meaning a lot of weight which leads to worse maneuvering performance for example.
      So, all of the sudden we have a MiG-25/31 type aircraft which basically, just like the MiG-25/MiG-31 is barely a fighter aircraft, at least not in the the traditional sense of the word.
