This is because she was caught engaging in prostitution. The punishment for prostitution is too light. Korea is a place where desire is suppressed due to strong Confucianism, but in the women's generation community, women in their 30s are having sexual relations with middle and high school students. The female director of a dermatology hospital hires female employees in their 20s to make money. They hire people to eng*ge in prostitution.

2 years for gang rape??? In Australia they'd be gone for decades. That's the problem. The laws are't strict enough. It's a patriarchal problem. Disgusting.
No one protected them because they were men, they were protected because they were rich and famous. If they were women, they would still be protected.
Australia’s legal system is a bit better, but not by much. It’s a case close to me, but there was a p*do charged with 6 counts of SAing girls under the age of 10, and he got 100 hours community service. That’s it. It’s ridiculous. There’s no justice, not properly.
Yeah that’s why these Korean men say they love the laws in Korean, because the laws don’t really give a damn
because the MEN in power and/or with status are also criminals and corrupt hence they wont do anything to strengthen laws and protect women, because for what when it benefits a society that is made for men by men?
only 5 years for gang rape ? The Laws in South Korea aren't strict enough. I agree it's a patriarchal problem. DISGUSTING !!!!!!!!!!
It’s not about K-Pop alone. It’s about Korean culture. It’s the Korean men’s mentality. It’s their culture which they should address and correct.
Nothing wrong with our culture. That's just your irrelevant opinion. You're just jealous because nobody wants you.

Seungri got the lightless because of YG Entertainment connection to politicians.
Jung Joon-young seems like he's alone and didn't have someone great behind him so that's why he got more.
i used to really like kpop from 2009 - 2013/4, just grew old but still dapping every now and then. it wasn't a surprised for me when i heard about this scandal and their prison terms. even cases of murder or pedophile, the perpetrator got no more than 10 yrs - like for a nobody person. i feel like the reason the sentence is so low is because of the politicians in their national assembly, they probably did it too so they also don't want a harsh sentence so that's probably why they wrote the law that way.
I'm a high school girl in Korea.
First of all, I'm truly, sincerely grateful that bbc brought this up because If I raise questions about these kinds of issues at school, I'm branded a thumping piggy feminist, an "emotional disorder."
I shed tears of unknown reason when I saw comments from foreigners who said they would listen to this and stand in solidarity. Thank you very much.
When this incident broke out, Korea was quiet. When Room N broke out (a case in which 260,000 Korean men watched a video clip in which a caterpillar was placed on a video device sexually assaulting elementary, middle, and high school and adult women my age), Korean men exaggerated the incident, saying that the actual sexual assault rate would be reduced only when the victims watched such videos as "enjoyed" because they wanted to. The mastermind of this nightmare was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and the person who disclosed their personal information about the criminals in anger was sentenced to two years in prison.
Three years later, just yesterday, a group of male students from Seoul National University, the nation's most prestigious university, posted illegal compounds of 60 women from their alumni and enjoyed watching them in more than 200 chat rooms. Another man from a prestigious medical school killed his girlfriend, who told him to break up at the same school.
Even though women are being sexually assaulted and killed every day in this land, the media keeps silent about the demonstration of a female nursery teacher who has no motherhood, and Korean men treat me as if it is the only big deal. It is a sense of victimization. Women also enjoy watching children's play, but they cover up the case, saying, "Isn't it the female version of Room N?" I cannot comment on these issues at school. That is why I desperately need your attention and solidarity. please Don't believe what they say in K-drama. I hope women take care of yourself and stay safe.
What is that female version of n room??
Stay safe out there! If you and your homegirls ever decide to go party, please remain constantly alert and don’t let anyone tamper with your drinks or make you drink a lot! Here in America this happened before but recently ladies are taking action against date rape and stuff. Stay safe ❤
What the hell. It’s crazy that k-drama is a lie 😭 I feel bad for korean women. I could never live in a society so terrible where the men are misogynistic overly conservative pigs. Here in the U.S its bad, but holy shit South Korea is a SCARY place for woman!!

As a Korean woman, i hope every people know the present of Korean women right. Thank you BBC. It needs so much courage in Korea. I just want safe place for every women. Korea is not that place for sure.
Is this why women rights activist are advocating the 4Bs (do nots)... do not date, do not marry, do not have children and do not have sex? It makes sense now but your country birth rate is already so low....

Contrary to what they say, if we knew how Korean society exploits Korean men, we would not be able to unilaterally dishonor Korean men like this. The situation of the average Korean man is different from Burning Sun. Korean women also know that the average Korean man is exploited and lives a life that has nothing to do with Burning Sun. I already knew there are huge societal issues in South Korea, especially regarding women's rights and how male offenders are never punished, but I think that of this documentary, I find the lack of judicial action and protection even more disgusting and distressing than what these women have had to suffer and will have to keep enduring without a reform of the law.

@@duckiechen1321 Unfortunately stalking laws have only recently been put into stronger law in South Korea, after a woman was murdered in a subway bathroom by her stalker and he was captured on CCTV. It still did not go far enough to protect women overall.
Even Korean singers and actors, who have to deal with incredibly invasive stalker fans, didn't have legal recourse to deal with them until the last couple of years. Most of their companies seem to settle out of court if they receive an apology from the perpetrator and promise to work better on themselves.

@@orangenerator I appreciate your opinion. But this issue is, in a high chance, not because Korea’s low population and birth rate. As Korea become democratic, because of such horrific experience of violation, legitimation had to be strict on human rights and the basic laws became fixed until today. A murder that just happened
1) The investigation into the murder has seen no progress for ten days because the perpetrator is a woman, She's name is Yujin-Kang.
2) The murderer was not detained and was allowed to return to her hometown.
3) Despite calling it an excessive invasion of privacy, there has been no mention of privacy concerns in other murder cases. Four witnesses saw the trainee soldier being tortured. One died, and the other three escaped and reported it. However, instead of taking their reports seriously, the Korean military subjected them to a full day of criticism and interrogation for daring to accuse a female officer of intentionally torturing the trainee to death. Meanwhile, the murderer,Yujin-Kang, was granted leave and sent home because she is a woman. There was no investigation for ten days. The perpetrator did not flee or hide; she continued her daily life and work. Moreover, she insulted the deceased by saying, "He was too weak, and I wanted to torture him more, but he died a bit sooner than I expected." Despite many witnesses to Kang Yu-jin's torture, the police did not investigate because she is a woman.
Driven by malicious intent towards the trainee soldier, the perpetrator added heavy books to the already burdensome 40kg military gear. When the trainee soldier's health deteriorated severely, pleas for assistance from colleagues were callously ignored. Despite witnessing his collapse and repeated requests to rush him to the emergency room, she insisted on sending him to the infirmary, where he succumbed to his excruciating condition by 5 PM. Testimonies from the perpetrator's acquaintances and classmates vividly depict an ardent feminist consumed by intense hatred for men. While some young Korean women in their 20s and 30s argue the criticism is solely gender-based, the reality suggests otherwise. This dreadful act of torture and murder, rooted in misandry, is exacerbated by the rise of extreme feminist ideologies in Korea. Had the perpetrator been male, severe legal repercussions for murder would have been inevitable. However, being female, she is instead afforded psychological treatment and careful consideration from political leaders wary of the electoral influence of young adults. The lack of investigations into crimes by Korean women against U.S. soldiers and minors, as noted on the Yeoseongsidae community site, further underscores this disparity. In Korea, feminists seem to have achieved an almost untouchable status. This case exemplifies how feminist ideals persist even within the military, with the state actively facilitating the perpetrator's smooth economic reintegration. Under the Women's Protection Act in Korea, men bear the burden of proving their innocence, often leading to convictions solely based on accusations. A notable example is the case involving Yeongsu Oh, an actor from the Squid Game series, where the only evidence presented was the accuser's diary.
I heard about the photo of the deceased soldier in the ROTC group. At first, it seemed like the finger gesture was digitally added, but it turned out to be real. The gesture in the photo, made by female ROTC members, raises questions about its significance.
The finger gesture used by Megalia to mockingly depict a small penis and derogatorily refer to Korean men as "한남유충" (Han-nam insects) stems from a form of male chauvinism and sexism. It's intended to criticize and ridicule men, perpetuating gender bias and fostering division. This behavior is unacceptable and promotes discrimination, regardless of gender or race.

Many K-pop fans, predominantly women, including self-proclaimed radical feminists, contributed to Shirley's tragic death with their hurtful comments, disapproving of her appeal to male audiences. This negativity led to Goo Hara's suicide, possibly influenced by the Werther effect. A large portion of these individuals gather on Daum's official community, Yeoseongsidae, boasting 840,000 extremists. Shirley became the target of a relentless witch hunt within this closed community, where she was unjustly demonized.
The 840,000 members of Kakao's women-only Daum official cafe, Yeoseongsidae, who have been implicated in criminal activities for sharing videos containing personal information of minors, have surprisingly received little attention. Insights from Reddit posts have brought to light the site's reputation for unlawfully distributing facial and nude photos, as well as personal details like addresses and names. This underscores the crucial need for direct permission from the operator to join. Notably,The exposure of this information didn't stem from formal reports but rather surfaced through disclosures on Reddit, where a former USFK member revealed the situation. The Kakao official cafe gained public attention for the first time due to its association with the former President Moon Jae-in's Democratic Party, which had close ties to the police chief who overlooked the Burning Sun scandal. Consequently, Korean media outlets like '뉴데일리' refrained from reporting on it, showing deference to the party's influence. However, it wasn't until the recent revelation of the site's criminal activities by the US military personnel that it was first brought to light. The current Korean President was the Prosecutor General of this case. Is that on his wikipedia page?
Even though I've already known this issue for many years, I still feel shocked and terrified by watching this report. It's soooooooo disgusting. And I hope there is no one experiencing this pain again in society. 😢😢😢
14:29 you mightve missed this part..
With these low convictions, Korea has shown how unimportant the victims' rights are to them.
on the other hand, how wealth and power they value in their society. They can do EVERYTHING without any consequent.
"Women victims". There is a difference.
What a joke! 2 years max? SK needs to fix their laws.
It’s the fans that are the worst. They are in denial, make excuses, and allow their idols to think they are above it all and have the right to do what they want. They’re as disgusting as their idols who have committed those crimes. I feel so bad for the journalist that did right by the victims.
I'm glad it's not the case anymore 😌
@@onuspromis7166 I checked the video again and saw many of the recent comments were still accusing the victims that they must have been aware of what they'd go through in clubs. 5 years from the scandal and nothing has been changed.

@@onuspromis7166Sadly, it hasn’t gotten any better but worse. Backlash against feminist movements is becoming one of the biggest social problems in Korea. Not only people would accuse women for ‘not being careful enough,’ or acting in a way that would lure men to commit sex crimes, young Korean men have extremely deprived understandings in feminism and are continuously demonising the movement. This sociocultural atmosphere is already educating the youth to think that speaking about feminism is ‘dangerous,’ shushing the mouth of victims, human rights activists, and simply people who believe in equal rights. I have a whole lot to say about this so lmk if you hope to know more
Shockingly low sentences. We call for a proper investigation. I appreciate the BBC covering this topic, which has been completely ignored by the Korean media.
Hollywood stars went to Esptain Island, but the BBC is hiding it.😅
This case needs to reopen.
This is absolutely disgusting. How can they get such low sentences for such horrifying crimes? People need to start thinking with their brains rather than other people's money and fame. Thinking about the pain the victims must be living with. Praying for them and one day justice will be served to them like it should have been all this while
5 years? 2 years? This damn low sentence and you expect to decrease the crime rate?
What should these men be afraid of if the law isn't scary enough?
one year is nothing for ruining a person's life
When will women be treated as human beings in South Korea...?
Yes, in Korea, but also all over the world since women continue to be victimized to some degree in every society.
Patriarchy is a worldwide issue hun not a South Korea issue. What’s with these Americans everywhere making this some korea issue. This is a human issue. This is not some “exclusive to Korean women” kind of issue.
@@zakeernalir2871 No need to use the condescending and sexist "hun", though. There's no indication whether the original OP is male or female.

Not just in Korea but all over the world
@@emmavu09Exactly, which is why the focus on Seungri, and Burning Sun, makes little sense to me. The problem is not solved by forcing one kpop idol to quit and shutting down one nightclub. Nothing's actually changed for the better.
Its really a toxic place to live in for women.. i now totally understand women's mindset to not get married or have kids in SK.
Thats a little silly, cause its probably not most korean man, who are absolute psychos and this is like fear based people who say "Oh my parents got divorced, so I will never marry either!", acting like they cant choose their spouses and make better choices. Always assuming life is the same for everyone. The reasons people dont have kids in SK are numerous. Not enough living space, high costs, high rates of stress and depression, fear, unhinged school demands etc..
Why the hell were the sentences for these atrocious crimes so ridiculously short?!!!
Many Korean men praise the perpetrators and insult the victims for this incident. They also say that these events are experienced by all Korean men, and that Korean men have the right to watch sexual video.

The Korean people are very thankful that the BBC has dealt with a very corrupt case that was buried in place of the corrupt media in Korea.
As the political community is heavily involved in this case, no matter how much the public talks about it, the government is in a hurry to cover it with gossip from other celebrities. It is still doing. Those who have taken courage in this case are dead and silent.
