This song was popular in England in 1973, at the time I was building a house with money provided by my mother in law. The house was designed to have a granny annex so that she might come and live with my wife and I. I was nearly at the completion stage when she was taken into hospital with what turned out to be terminal cancer. She knew she had cancer and for a long time had chosen not to tell us. We were a young family with two small children and I suppose she wanted to protect us from the grief. I had gone to visit her at the hospital and she broke the news to me that the surgeon had given her only six weeks to live. She asked me not to tell her daughter (my wife) until she returned home to die, she was living with us at the time. For nearly two weeks I had to keep the bad news and at the same time I had to go to the building site of the new house, designed for her to come and live with us and now not to be possible. I didn’t know the words to the song but the emotion contained in it pulled at my heart when I heard it played on the transistor radio I had on site. As a grown man I cried at the coming pain of losing her and the futility of what I was trying to achieve in the house I was building that she would never see completed and fifty years later I still cry when I hear it.

I go away
This time I have decided to go
but why didn`t you tell me
that you can`t stand it any longer
within that half-smile
a bit dull, I discovered the defects you have
but how could I ever love you?
I swear that...
I go away, your home is no longer
It`s better if I leave you
now that I can, I leave you
I am no longer the guy you know
but I would never have second thoughts
I swear that...
I go away, your home is no longer
It`s better if...
I tremble on the edge of a quiet world
my journey ends with you
but how could I love you?
I swear that...
I go away...your home is no longer
It`s better if I leave you, now that I can
I leave you now that I can
I leave you, I leave you
Now that I can I leave you
