There's a certain feeling you get when you enter an old world, who's life lies in the wake of abandoment. Washed away by the sands of time, these spaces haunt me with their eerie stillness; In these moments, I'm faced with my own vulnerability. That at any point, something might come out of the fog. The absence of movement, life or anyone in these spaces makes me question if I'm really alone...
They are liminal spaces. An uncertain transition between where you've been and where you're going, physically, emotionally or metaphorically. To be in a liminal space is to be on the precipice of something new, but not quite there yet. This is the essence of these old worlds lost to time. They're digital relics that emanate a sense of transition, yet are perpetually at rest.
To stay bound to such a world feels inherently wrong. It contradicts the very nature of liminality, which is about movement and transition. It goes against the inevitability of moving forward, of letting go of what once was in order to embrace what will be. Being within these timeless spaces cultivates a sense of impending danger. The stillness becomes oppressive, and the lack of life breeds paranoia.
From a sudden movement - to the suspiciously open door that you're sure you had closed.
You start to imagine that at any moment, something, someone-one as capable and intent as you-might emerge from the fog. And this very thought stirs a primal fear, a reminder that even in a digital realm, the unknown can be deeply unsettling.
