This film, along with very few others, is STILL in a class of it's own.
It is a masterpiece with the types of actors that just do not exist anymore. Our so called Hollywood royalty of today seem like cartoon characters compaired to these.

"The Wizard of Oz," "The Philadelphia Story," "All About Eve" and "Rear Window" are also gems that could not be remade with the class of the originals either. And there really is no Hollywood royalty anymore. Today's top echelon of actors and actresses (such as they are) are too busy spouting their political views and having cosmetic surgeries to be bothered with acting.
Also, the geography of California, with the wild fires and gang violence, has made many entertainers flea Los Angeles and California for Eastern and Rocky Mountain states, chiefly Colorado (Boulder and Denver), Connecticut and New York, except when they are needed to work in a studio. Plus much of filming work these days is done on location and out of Hollywood, in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver, chiefly), and in the Southern United States (Georgia and the Carolinas).
Yes, "Sammy White the Persian cat," the days of Fred Astaire, Jack Benny, Humphrey Bogart, Bing Crosby, Henry Fonda, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, Roy Rogers, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, John Wayne, and Clifton Webb, as well of Lucille Ball, Ingrid Bergman, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, Olivia de Havilland, Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young, and other Hollywood greats are long gone. The likes of a Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Christian Bale and George Clooney are nothing compared to any of the aforementioned Hollywood greats.

Not a Clark Gable fan, never was, never will be. But to find out that he was reluctant to take the role of Rhett Butler when he was the best Rhett Butler there ever was or ever will be, is shocking. I mean, he looked the part from top to bottom, moreso than Howard did with Ashley. I cannot imagine any other actor either back then or now who would've done Rhett Butler more justice. The same goes for Vivien Leigh as Scarlett. With those two as the lovers this movie was bound to do well.

Leslie Howard had been one of her most favorite actors of all time - I think she had a crush on him. In my opinion, this is still probably the best movie ever made. I have seen it quite a few times and I will watch it again. In spite of all the twists and turns during production of this movie, with 3 different directors, it's a masterpiece. A great book. It's really impressive how the makeup people turned a middle aged Leslie Howard into a young Ashley. Howard really looked his age but the combination of cosmetics, camera work, and good acting really pulled it off, esp since Howard didn't want to do it, but he was a pro.
I always liked Ashley. He was not unmanly. He might have been a business failure who could not adjust well enough to the post civil war, but he was a decent man who faced reality and his own short comings, and that's not a bad thing.
De Havilland was the best Melanie, but Anne Shirley's tests were very nice,, especially as a young Melanie. The deeper kinder ladylike voice is what makes Melanie work at any age. The casting was a tour de force of finding people who could perform the characters beautifully over the ten+ year span of the story.
Sometimes I watch the movie, and it seems overwrought and over dramatic. Then I watch again and It is a masterpiece of it's time. It certainly cannot be duplicated in this time.
Same goes for most supporting actors. AMAZING casting. No wonder it took so long.
Honestly, the only actor who didn't work for me is Gable, because he was too much his own type then and he recognized it. But I can't think of someone else to play the part who wouldn't also be too distinctly himself. (eg Melvyn Douglas) The author visualized Walter Pidgeon. Interesting!

Does anyone know where i can get a download of this full documentary. It came out in 88/89 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of GWTW. It is lengthy over 2 hours long but i find the end terribly emotive. It shows Scarlett doing her ‘never be hungry again’ speech. It to me epitomised the era as my country was getting it’s guts ripped out by the Germans and here was this Englishwoman swearing vengeance, the lighting emphasised it too. I dont cry at films but the narration over the screen is also heartbreaking as the whole world was about to be turned upside down

Clark Gable was utterly spot on for Rhett regardless of how he felt
Almost sounds like Errol Flynn narrating ?

Were any of these actresses considered for either Scarlett or Melanie or even Belle? Bette Davis, Janet Gaynor, Claudette Colbert, Norma Shearer, Marlene Dietruch, Ann Dvoark,Carole Lombard, Irene Dunne, Kay Francis, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable,Linda Darnell(May have been too early), Ida Lupino, Greta Garbo(maybe as Belle?), Hedy Lamarr(same as Garbo),Ann Sheridan, Judy Garland, Anita Louise, Marsha Hunt, Jane Bryan,Jeanette MacDonald, Maureen O'Sullivan,Virginia Bruce,Joan Crawford, Virginia Grey, Deanna Durbin,Myrna Loy,Greer Garson, Ingrid Bergman, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine,Luise Rainer(she may have left H'wood by then),Ruth Hussey, Kate Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, Eve Arden,Claire Trevor.Barbara Stanwyck, Lupe Velez,Dolores Del Rio,Maureen O'Hara(maybe too early), Margaret Lindsay, Josephine Hutchinson, Jean Muir, Dorothy Lamour, Ruby Keeler(as Melanie),Ginger Rogers,Joan Blondell,Loretta Young, Eleanor Powell, Merle Oberon, Geri Fitzgerald, Conny Bennett, Florence Rice, Mary Astor(as Belle maybe), Gladys George(as Belle), Arline Judge, Gloria Dickson, Sonja Henie(merlanie?), Alice Faye,Ann Harding,Madge Evans,Karen Morley(Belle)? Betty, Linda, Deanna and Judy would have made good Melanies. I know Rita, Ida, Ann and Betty were still starlets at the time but well known enough to be tested. I think Bette and Lombard would have made good Scarletts, and Kay, who had lost her clout in Hollywood by then, could have made a good Belle. Harlow may have made a good Scarlett had she lived. The casting of Garbo, Hedy,Lupe and Luise isn't that far off, as , despite her accent, Luise played a tragic Southern belle, in the sadly forgotten, quite good 1937 film The Toy Wife. Miss Jennifer Jones(then known as Phylis Isley) and Miss Carole Landis were two starlets , both in B westerns at that time. They may have been too unknown to be tested but they would have been good in the film. also Miss Veronica Lake(known then as Connie Keane) had 3 bit roles in 1939. Though she would have made a good Melanie, I dont think she was well known enough to be tested for the role.Does anyone know of a role the late, great Marjorie Main could have played in the film? Perhaps Dolly Merriwether? But not Aunt Pittypat. Laura Hope Crews was too perfect in that role. She was hilarious. Added some very needed comic relief to the film. I wish they could have found roles for the superb Edna May Oliver and Maria Ouespenskya in the film? Any thoughts?, Above Goddard, the gorgeous talented Edith Marrener would have made a good Scarlett. She looked Irish , which was also good for the role, and was also youthful Was Edie(soon to conquer Hollywood as Susan Hayward) too young and not yet a good enough actress to play the role? An amazing thing about Susan Hayward is how long it took for Hollywood to realize that she should have been a leading lady and major star. For 10 years , Hayward floundered in supporting roles(two with Goddard) and as a leading lady in B movies(like Jack London(1944) and Hit Parade of 1943) before reaching stardom with her Oscar nominated performance in Smash Up(1947). In 1948, Hayward got a Scarlett-ish type role in the long forgotten film Tap Roots(1948). One of the most beautiful and most talented women ever in Hollywood, Hayward would peak in the 1950s as a top box office draw for 20th Century Fox, even though they gave her films that really didn't show off her tremendous acting skills. On loanout to MGM, Hayward gave a maginificent performance(and sang very well) in I'll Cry Tomorrow(1955).Final note, Robert Taylor would have made a good Ashley, but, perhaps, was too big of a star for such a supporting role.

Clark Gable was so lucky in life that he was kissed by such a beauty as Vivien Leigh! They look so good together, they play love so romantically! It's a pity that the film does not fully correspond to the book, there are so many scenes in it that could be perfectly played, even if the film was for 6 hours, I agree!

How could Scarlett be in love with him when she could have had the wonderful Rhett Butler. Clark Gable was perfect in his role. He was born for the part as well as Vivian Leigh for Scarlett’s
