Killer Mike’s Grind National | Old V6 to New V8 - Episode 2

  • With just over three weeks remaining, the crew at Suppy’s shop in Southern California was beginning to comprehend the work that lay ahead to prepare Killer Mike's Grand National for the 2024 Grammy Awards. As revealed in episode one, the Buick's original 3.8-liter turbo six faced a terminal rod knock, prompting the decision to install a 640-horsepower supercharged LT4 crate engine. However, achieving this required a comprehensive overhaul, essentially starting from scratch.
    The rear-end and exhaust came out first, followed by the transmission and suspension. However, removing the engine proved more difficult than the team originally thought. Once out though, it was time to 3D scan the engine bay so Grimm could start fabricating up some new parts, and then wheel the car outside for a thorough degreasing and engine bay repaint.
    Stay tuned for these developments and more in the upcoming episode of Killer Mike's Grind National!”

      The fact that they even did this swap when Killer Mike's dream car was the V6 that smacked 80's cars asses is lame. Build up the v6 to be a killer build and smack current muscle cars and still have that classic GN Sound !

  • @abstracts2004
    @abstracts2004 Před 3 měsíci +6

    Im not much of a purest but the GN whole deal was the fact that it was a turbo v6. I have a swapped olds 442 and its awesome. But i just think that some cars you keep OG. But then again it sounded like the engine was blown up so the swap makes some sense. Watching then destroy that air box was tough though.

      Another way to look at it is to stop whining and crying about backlash after you rip apart an iconic, clean GN and give it a run of the mill LS corporate motor seen in Pick up trucks and Camaro’s. At least they changed the name of the car to that stupid ‘Grind National’ moniker because now it’s just a Regal. I’d love to bid on that factory 3.8 SFI drivetrain though. I could use the extra parts for my T Type. 😊

    • @subbassrules
      @subbassrules Před 3 měsíci +5

      Changing from a knocking motor to a different, reliable engine with 2-3 times as much horsepower is always a win in my book. Is it a bad decision financially? Probably. It's still hot rodding and cool. If anyone else wants to do this, just buy a normal Regal and make it into something great.

      With a blown motor it’s not worth that much. Running/driving GNs are selling for $20k and up. I know it’s all relative, and some GNs are advertised for six figures, but it doesn’t seem like they all command that kind of price.

    It is not a GN and/or Turbo Regal anymore. I remember Hoonigans raced a GN against a modern SUV, but did not change the old valve springs in the heads, which critical for boost to enter the intake valves. They failed to mention the LC2 V6 stats would wipe the floor with the majority of today's V6s. *Please let real Buick Turbo gurus work on this car.* These motors (LC2) can handle 8s/9s when fully built along with a girdle.

    • @drivebigmuscle8080
      @drivebigmuscle8080 Před 3 měsíci +3

      The original engine in this car was junk - it had a rod knock, and the cost to rebuild and reengineer it would've been just as expensive and a helluva lot more time consuming than doing the swap. Plus, a direct injected supercharged V8 only enhances the cars overall potential.

  • @Vampirebear13
    @Vampirebear13 Před 3 měsíci +17

    The whole point of the Regal Grand National & T-Type was having that turbo V6 & how it was GM's fastest production car at the time.
    Putting in a V8, no matter how powerful just ruins the ethos of the car.
    You should've just found a regular Regal & built that instead.

      You understand that this was a tired car right, and what we're doing is not only enhancing it, but giving it another 4 decades on the road...

      Man, if you really cared that much you’d buy your own and 🤫.

      I don't care. They're the ones who posted the video. I drove these Regal's when they were new & was quite impressed but still bought a Mustang GT convertible instead.
      The GM "J" body cars are nose heavy & the rear end gets very squirrelly under hard braking. But they're quite comfortable highway cruisers.

      @@drivebigmuscle8080 I didn't get to finish watching the 1st episode so I don't know how "tired" this GN was BUT my comment stands because even though you call it
      "enhancement" you're ruining what made the GN (and T-Type, which is more rare btw) "special".
      And you could've given this car "another 4 decades on the road" just by restoring it to original.

      I think you meant "G" body broski (Grand Prix, Monte, Cutlass & Regal). The J bodies I think were the Cavaliers, Sunbirds, Cimmarons etc. @@Vampirebear13

    Why not just buy a regular Buick Regal instead of ruining a Buick grand national..

    If you guys are crying about keeping it nostalgic, they don't have the time Or want to wast the money And time to restore it. They're getting it back on the road and they're gonna drive it and enjoy it. Most people that have the original engine don't even want to put miles on it. And to be honest, the v6 engine needs to be updated with modern technology. It will run better and last longer the way they tuned them You need a dinosaur in order to tune it.

    It’s ok they did a swap, but shame on Hemmings and a big fat thumbs down for letting them cut and tear out rare pieces enthusiasts need. You can rebrand this GN, but give someone else some help while doing it.
