One of my absolute all time favorite movies. So much to love… Olivia, Gene, roller skating. Saw this a few years ago at the drive in with The Apple. Best night in forever.
Me too!!! Love this movie!
My all-time favourite guilty pleasure film - Nobody but Olivia could have given this movie such lasting cult-classic status. She was adorable. The song, "Xanadu" may well be the best pop song of all time, the chord structure is phenomenal, Jeff Lynne really knows his stuff! Rest well ON-J you will never not be our Kira/Sandy...
Glad you appreciate it, too. We really enjoyed it and found it timeless in a sense.
I was 7 years old in 1980. Xanadu was on HBO the following year I believe. I watched it almost every time they showed it. Then in the following years when Video Rental Stores were new, I usually requested that my Mom rent it for me. I also wanted to rent See No Evil, Fear No Evil, when it was on video, and you could rent VHS and Beta machines from Albertsons. Great times to be a kid! 🤘😎
You guys joke, but Olivia asked to be in this film from the start. She approached the studio once she her about the film being made. This was a movie Olivia really wanted to make. For good or bad; it was her decision
We do joke but overall I look back on the film as a beautiful expression of art from her. - Chris
I love this movie. It’s one of my favorites. I am a harsh critic, but this one hit me a certain way.
One of those glowing women/muses at the 'im alive' segment was Valeria from Conan the Barbarian! :)
LOVE this movie! Watch it over and over! 1980, I was 17 years old and ready for the perfect love, like ONJ!
Like so many other movies of the time, a willingness to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the time is required. Then it turns from a so-so movie to a guilty pleasure. Guilty, here.
This is my favorite movie. It's art like no other. Anyone who doesn't like it (including all the critics who gave it bad reviews back in the day) were comparing it to other movies instead of seeing it for the work of art that it is by itself. Xanadu is a perfect example of not following the cookie cutter path and finding It's own fan base and I love it for that. ONJ at her prettiest. Beck adorable in an Andy Gibb kind of way. Amazing ONJ and ELO soundtrack. Streamline Moderne CA on display everywhere. I loved this film as a child, but it wasn't until I grew up that I was able to truly appreciate the uniqueness of it.
Exactly! There are people who understand the fantasy aspect of it. Too many people sit down expecting everything to be explained. That's not the point. It's intentionally surreal and open to interpretation.
When I was a little kid I saw this movie on hbo and liked it for some reason, watched it a bunch of times. My 70's dad tried to tell me that it was stupid (using other words), but I didn't believe him at the time.
I heard of it as reference as how bad it was on other shows etc but I like it. Real men skate around town and dance in dark rooms with spirits!
The music and Olivia saves this movie.
There is something "magic" about Olivia. She was a real talent. I still binge her music. Thanks for watching. This is the video where we were asking for 1 sub. Now we have 2000. What a strange journey. -Kyle
The soundtrack is great. And the broadway musical was fun
I think the cartoon scene was added because ELO had a contract for a certain amount of songs, and the movie was completed one short, so they had to throw in that scene so that song would satisfy the contract. I'm not positive, but it's what I've heard.
Out of all the animators, they chose the great Don Bluth.
Gonna watch it again now!
It's tough to find context in Xanadu.
Yall are kinda rude with this movie! A lot of people love this movie!
We are reacting to it from a modern standpoint, not necessarily from a nostalgic view.
Sorry. I was there. It was not an "Infinity War" of its time. Rumor was that it was bad even before it came out. I think the album did OK (with Olivia and ELO), but people absolutely hated the movie.
In the thousand years since then, I have fond memories of it. I usually don't watch it though. Because it really is bad. I love how about half-way through, they just give up on the story and give us a series of music video.
Actually, it may be one of those movies that is so bad it actually becomes good.
The album did quite well.
This film destroyed the promising career of Michael Beck.
Everyone but me hates this movie. But i dont care :)
I became a fan while watching. It's a nice, positive movie!
You don't need those people in your life - cut the negativity off - lol... It always cheers me up to watch this mess of a film that I adore so much!
